How do you feel about career mode forcing a podium finish to progress?

From watching the live streams, it seems that the Forza 6 career mode requires players to come 1st, 2nd or 3rd before being allowed to move to the next race.

I initially thought this rule was in place just for the first qualifying series, but that appears not to be the case.

How do you guys and gals feel about this?

I think it seems quite restrictive and could potentially make the career a tad frustrating, being forced to restart over and over again untill you get into the top three.

It could also make the races less rewarding. For example, playing against AI set to unbeatable and managing to get 4th place should be a something for the average player to feel good about, but in Forza 6, that position means faliure and a forced restart.

Or maybe i'm looking at it the wrong way, and there are benefits to this design that i haven't thought of?

I don't think it'll restrict anyone because the drivatars can just be set to the easiest level if you want to progress quickly

Myself, I don't mind taking my time. I've spent a big dollop of cash on the Ultimate edition, I don't want to rush it

Great system and all track based racing games should have it. I believe GT6 has the same system with it's "Stars" where you have to finish in the top 3 to get stars to progress, and even having to win some of the events to unlock the next series

I'd prefer it if some other game mechanic like credits or XP limited your progression through the game. That way your finishing positions only determines how quickly you progress through the game rather than limiting it completely. Some drivers go through their whole career in motorsport in the midfield.

And the end of the day it's a game and there probably isn't any perfect way to do it. However, this way could potentially means gamers would be more likely to stick the AI on a lower level to finish in the top three rather than sticking with a much harder AI setting and making their way through the game more slowly but hopefully improving their ability at the same time by racing the harder AI.

I think career is only a small segment of what forza offers, it is the appetizer.
And game gives you all these tools (car improvements, aids, AI level) at your fingertips, so I think its actually IMPOSSIBLE to hinder progress. Oh, and add to the above the new kid on the block for career, mods.

so, I think -on the contrary- the multipliers offered by tougher AI and less aids should work in favor of the player getting better, not worse.

ps
I wouldn't mind seeing a mod for online racing, offering some nice bonus for clean racing online.
but I guess they made the cars more tolerable to bumping to counter that ...community problem.

I dont really like the finish 3rd or better and there's several reason for that :

- I like to play in the top difficulty and make my way up the pack. Finishing 1st or on the podium is not my priority, I rather have a good clean race and finish 4th or 5th.
- Too few laps to really enjoy a good race from the back to finish 3rd or better. Most of the time you need to make your way by forcing some pass to be able to finish in top 3 on the hardest difficutly, your level of skill dont matter much on this case. If you take time to pass cleanly then the top drivers will be too far for you to have any chance to overtake them.
- I wish we had an option to choose race length. Would fix a lot of problem for me.

I can't even see why it would annoy anyone. Finish in the top 3 to progress, why would you not want an incentive.

It used to bug me in FM5 that you only needed a top 3 to get gold, 3rd 2nd of 1st should be bronze silver gold. So if anything for me it's too forgiving.

I'm sure there was a game on 360 that had steel, bronze, silver, gold and platinum medals but I can't remember r which one.

Ultimately the system is not much different to FM5. Podium chasing. Not convinced the mods would change the career structure.

I know this sounds dumb, but as someone who tries to place as high as possible anyway,it makes no difference to me,as for the mods,I don't like the idea but I may aswell embrace them as I have 15m + race/spin earnings to blow anyway..

Podium chasing and two to three lap races is not a fun combination unfortunately. Grid Autosport and PCars' variable event lengths are a much better compromise which don't require you to become the Terminator at turn 1.

Now we have the tracks and racing classes, it would've been nice to have a ten-race series in single player, so you can feel like you're going through a season.

Back in FM2, I remember racing a Tsukuba enduro three times and turned up with a new livery each time. I miss the pretend nature when it's a 3-race, 3-lap means to an end that we have now.

If you cant beat AI on the lowest level, then you should play something else or practice more?

Agreed but if you want to race against the toughest AI but aren't good enough to finish in the top three you can't advance in the game. If your progress through the game was dependent on xp or credits for example your lowly finishing position would slow your progress through the game but wouldn't put a stop to it.

The way this game is setup, it doesnt matter. You can allways change the difficulty on your way. You will never get stock, unless you're a stubborn donkey. I cant see this as a game breaker in any way.

EDIT:

Actually i think it adds to the replay value of this game, for those who cant finish with a gold medal on the hardest setting in first try.

I don't mind to finish podium in order to progress, though I would much rather have a
championship series sort of system where you accumulate points, like how it is in Horizon 2.
It would fit much better in a Motorsport game IMO.

I think it's a fine progression system. I think I'll either play the game on the highest or second highest difficulty level, and I won't mind a few retries from time to time. Every race will be enjoyable regardless of how far I have progressed, and I definitely won't care not seeing it all within the estimated 70 hours. After all, every race comes with rewards that bring me closer to collecting every car in the game. It's driving all those great cars, as opposed to career progression, that motivates me. There's no rush.

I'm with you. There are some tracks I'm excellent at, others I'm decent at, and some I'm just mediocre at. The whole point of a race season is finding out who's best overall.
