my mini just broke after five years, and just gave up last night. basically, there was a loud BEEP (i jumped out of bed like a ninja on crack:eek: ) and the thing started smoking. i'll post an MS Paint picture of what happened later...

Contrary to popular belief, electronic devices use smoke, not electrons, to function. The proof is that when the smoke escapes they are dead, unfixable. Take a hammer to it and enjoy.

You might be able to find a replacement board on eBay if that is the problem and if you do use eBay.

tap one of the top corners on a tabletop if your hard drive is skipping and stuff. I just fixed my ipod this way after months and months of having it broken.

This thread could also help me too.

My sisters nano was put through the wash (she's a dumbass) and won't work. My mom read up and found that this has happened to many people, and after it dried, it started working again.

The problem being, my sisters didn't start working again. Any suggestions?

This may be due to its in a humid environment, and the condensation hasn't evaporated completely, put it in an aircondioned room, that should help. :)

Its been just sitting there for a good week or two, so i should try it now, lol.

If you tried using it while it was still wet, something may have shorted out. Put it in front of a hair dryer for a while and then reset it. If it's still broken, take it to the mac store.

A five year old iPod Mini? Take it as an opportunity to upgrade, and move on with your life.

The iPod Mini hasn't existed for five years.

The first step is to pull the casing off and check if there's anything that looks bad. I'd think that if the thing starts to smoke, you would notice something on the inside.

Did you notice the Mini overheating any time prior to the "explosion"? Usually that's a sign that something's lose, and if not tended to, can lead to more damage (like it has). If you're looking at repairing it with eBay parts, also consider you can buy a brand new, unopened 4G Mini for maybe 50$ more, which will give you another 2 years (at least) of operation, which a Frankenstein 3-year old one probably won't.

My 3rd gen. died a couple months ago, after 4 years of owning it. It was done its second battery and had been through so many problems it was not worth repairing this time. I looked for a better alternative with at least 30G of storage, and the sad part is there still isn't anything better out there. Now I'm just waiting for currencies to par up to go and get one somewhere else.

If your looking into getting something new, i'd suggest a zune over the ipod anyday. My friend had one and it was awesome because you had a large screen for movies, you could change your background image, and you have all the functions that the ipod has.

As for the price, i don't know, but i wouldn't dought that the zune is pretty expensive. If i were to guess, i'd say it may cost around the same price that a 30-60 gig ipod does.

Try putting your sister through a wash. P.S. If shes extra fluffy try car wash then air dry if this doesn't work just dye her hair Blonde(she'll fit right in).

Center button + menu button = hard reset

always works...for me at least. But my 4gen greyscale 20gb hasn't gone up in smoke yet

Or one of those, since iPhones cost an unholy amount from what I've heard. Pwns the Zune for playback, has a good price point, more format support, easy to remove battery pack that you can carry extras, video and audio out to put videos on yer TV.

My brother has one, its awesome.

If you want something smaller, look at Sandisk's Sansa line, or iRivers products, or Creative. Many offer better options to Apple, at cheaper prices, with more features and such. I'll post a player that pretty much own the Shuffle when I get home to look at PC Mag to remember its name.

what is DRM saturated music?

DRM stands for something like digital rights management, or Dave's reading material. Something like that...

Usually it stops you from redistributing it with other people. The Zune's music is DRM protected so that once you send it over Wifi the other user can only play it 3 times over a period of 3 days. Hence "rented" - you don't get to keep it without paying more.

I really really really wouldn't get a Zune. It's just icky. If you're going to stay away from Apple, head for Creative like Azureman said. There's nothing especially wrong with it (apart from the software) but you could do so much better.

Well if you were legally downloading music, DRM music does make sense. It allows you to preview the song a couple of times and decide whether or not you would like to actually purchase it.

Ive used my friends zune and its great. To me it's like an ipod, but with a whole bunch of better features.

iPod 5.5G with rockbox. End of thread.

Your battery may have ballooned causing the smoke. Either way, after 3 years I think something newer would do a better job than continuously spending money to keep it going.

actually, just take it apart, replace the memory stuff, data stuff, and the screen with a small cellphone-type screen, and you'll have a custom iPod (if you can program it right)
