i just rented a dvd and popped it into my ps2 for the first time. my question is... how do you get rid of this widescreen thing? i got gangs of new york and under "options" there is no switch video to wide screen or regular screen. can you guys help me out?

If the DVD is formatted for widescreen then you probably can't make it full screen. However, Some of the newer TVs can change the way a picture is displayed.

Yeah, pretty much what Matrixhasu77 said.

The black bars are called a Letter Box. It shows all of the picture, like if it was at the theater (not sure if it's the same ratio though). If you make it "full screen" it cuts of the sides of the picture and you miss out on the whole picture.

Buy a wide screen tv... that would be the expensive option.

I also believe that your PS2 has a menu for changing it. So, like Tercel_driver said, check your manual.

If you let your TV modify the screen then either the picture will get stretched (deformed badly...) or you'll loose part of the image.

You are buying the "widescreen" version of the DVD, and you should be buying the "fullscreen" version.

On some DVDs, they might have something called "aspect ratio." Look for AR of 1.33.

Always buy the widescreen versions of the DVD's. You'll never know when you'll buy a widescreen TV, and you have nothing to lose by buying the widescreen over the fullscreen. In fact, you'll save tons of money by not having to buy all of your movies again.

I think there's an option in the Preferences(Like when you start up your PS2, pop your CD-tray out so it doesn't load any disks, then go to the preferences.) Scroll through the options there, and see if you can change any...

Or maybe that's just my DVD-player's menu... Do like everyone else suggested, and flip through the big book that came with the PS2...
