How do you get used to the driving online?

I know that when I first got GT4, I could NEVER race in a pack, i'd be hitting car's all over the place, and needed an over powerd car to get anywhere in that game so i dident wack other drivers... Now i can keep myself really calm in a pack vs. AI, but online, people are just so spontaniouse! They will jump out infront of you, ram you, and bump draft you from like, 20mph over you, and you go flying into a wall... I just don't know how some of you last the whole race without cursing at these drivers... I know everyone feels the same way, but some have grown used to them, and are able to drive with them, without getting anniliated... how?!

Shorter: how do you learn to drive in pack's online, every driver is diffrent, unlike A.I. and it makes it SUPER hard sometimes!

Let the punters drive themselves off the track in the first few corners and just take your chance and pass the few remaining and go for the leading pack.

Most of the time I drive a little slower just enough to be in the pack but not su much that I'll bump into them in every corner and wait for a good place to overtake them.

Easy, I only normally try and overtake when Im 100% sure I can with minimal contact.
Avoiding contact with those behind is a little more tricky, I suppose youre just going to have to trust the driver behind not to shunt you. That, or give up the racing line to let a faster or more aggressive driver through, I sometimes do that to avoid shunting or dirty tactics. Only works I suppose if you have been tailed by them for a while and you can tell theyre going to try something aggressive, but still, generally, if someones riding close, theyre going to try and outbrake you and the best thing is to give up the racing line and let them go off by themselves.

How do I race without cursing the other drivers? By concentrating on those people online who do drive clean or those who are new and are still learning. In other words, I ignore the dirty drivers, unless they are particularly troublesome, in which case I make a note of their PSN ID so I can approach with caution if I see them again.
Its funny though, Ive never seen the same dirty driver other than an on one day. I suppose it shows how committed they are to this game.

Only race the expert events. Even then, many times you can get first place by waiting for the people in front of you to run off the course, hit the wall, get a penalty, etc.

I don't find any difficulty with racing real people. There's a generally accepted racing line which most people stick to so you know vaguely where they'll be, you learn the best passing places, braking points etc so you know where you can pass, and where someone may try and pass you. More 'difficult' racers may choose to pass in an awkward place so you learn to prepare for that and take avoiding action. If you get hit, then tough luck, it's annoying but it's only a game and there's nothing you can do to 'un-hit' yourself so you have to take it on the chin.

Oh, and passing on GT5 is easy compared to a real life go-kart race against professional racers :sly: Or any real race for that matter.

Oh This I know, but again, its a game... for now....

I guess i'm just not as happy with online because of the short races, i wish you can do a 20 lap race at suzaka, long enough to come back into the race after a spin out, but short enough to not have to call off work...lol

Personally, I find being shunted from behind the most diffult to avoid. Most of the time, it happens to me just before corners and I get slammed into the sand.

I accept that there will always be wreckers and those who like to use cars around them as additional brakes (the way you progress through the GT licences literally encourage you to do so to get gold!). This is fine and it is right for PD to cater to these players' taste for commercial reasons but surely it should be relatively simple for PD to create an additional "Racing Simulation" environment for those players who prefer clean racing. So how about we get a few more on-line races where eractic drivng are penalised (say reduction in power depending on severity and degree of contact). In particular, collision detection should be temporaily switched off if any car is going too fast for any corner (say over 20mph). This way, any wrecker will miss me and fly into the sand instead :sly:. Only drivers who want to compete fairly would be interested in these "Racing Simulation" races and those who get their kicks from ramming into each other can have their own demolition derby.

Since they already have collision detection algorithm in the current game, it would be easy for them to introduce this quickly and will definitely make GT5P a much better game for all of us.

I deal with it using a combination of many of what's been said so far. It all depends on how other drivers play. I also notice that the early hours in my area seem to be less crowded (7am NYC area). At this time of day I have encountered another type of driver. The one that seems to play fair until you are going in for the pass. They drive nice and clean and interfere when you try and pass. Usually it's very good blocking, sometimes it's very rough bumping. In some way, I'm OK with the blocking, not sure why though. I know I'm not a great driver and have my share of mistakes, but none of them are intentional. They're usually do to "pressure" or miscalculations.

One good thing that can come from all this bumping these other people do is that you have an opportunity to learn/master some recovery techniques. I was quite surprised at myself with some of the recoveries I've gone through. It's a nice feeling to pass up the individual who caused it.

Something else I noticed, might be me though, is a bunch of drivers will keep intentionlly causing the car to ghost and massivly slide from bumping/drafting each other. It's impressive to see them slide away in a big bunch. Annoying, because I can't seem to catch up, but impressive.

Well, usually the first corner is the most treacherous, so i normally would take it easy at that point. Punters, bumpers, wall riders, are mostly unskilled fools who cant keep a good racing line. Let the field spread out a little bit, and once its settled you can run your horse, but, if ur able to survive the first few corners on the first lap, obviously you can just run away to the lead/lead pack. Them punters wont catch up.

I usually race on Suzuka just for the reason that its a sandtrap hell... get into one of those and ur race is over. No wall riders :)

Just drive your own race. Hold your line and hit your brake points and apexes. Be respectful of ALL other drivers (including the punters) and know that you can't pass the guy in front of you everywhere on the track. You won't be able to run your pace all the time, you might need to sit back behind the guy in front of you and wait for them to make a mistake (or put presure on them by being there until you do). See where the guy in front of you is slow and you are fast and use that to set up passes.
