Gran Tursimo 4 is making the greatest effort to make a regular racing game be more enjoyable and long-lasting. And since I joined the GTPlanet bandwagon, I wanted to discuss the highly-anticipated GT4 with you all. But I began to wonder. How do you make celebrating automotive history fun and enjoyable?

Some of you may have seen me rip on Gran Turismo 2 at times. But to me, this game went in a new direction from the first GT game other than rally racing. It introduced classic vehicles. Not just a few, MANY of them, not to mention many more car company acquisitions. Gran Turismo 3 took away at least 300 to 400 cars and came up with a GT game featuring almost all car companies with a few new inclusions. Gran Turismo 4 wants to celebrate automotive history and all GT fans are cordially invited to Kazunori Yamauchi and Polyphony Digital's party. Got your invite? The Museum Mode will make looking back at 118 years of the automobile highly enjoyable and satisfying. But I think that if PD can show WHY these cars are either old classics or neo classics rather than just show, automotive history can be made more enjoyable. The cars that have some sort of significance to the way we look at automobiles should be seriously considered. And PD are not resting on making this game hotter than Phoenix in the summer. So I'll be rather curious as to how PD will try to pull it off.

What do you think PD will have to do to make auto history fun?

I'm really looking forward to racing old cars against new cars...

Especially things that are meant to be the modern day counterparts of the old ones...

I.e. New/Old Mini's, New/Old Golf GTi's, New/Old Ford GT40/GT, Ford Escort Mk1,Focus, Renault 5, Clio...

These are the races that I really want to do and the other thing that I want to see... although I'm not sure it's even been considered... is if we're looking at automotive history then we need to look at Tracks too... I know we have the (in)famous Nurburgring but what about old tracks that are now no longer used like Goodwood?

Another aspect that I would like to see... is old skool F1 cars... The old famous one... like the John Player special, and Mansell's car, Nikki Lauda's car... This way they could mark the changes in the F1 development over the years too.

@ yeti:
niki lauda´s '76 (?) ferrari f1 on the nordschleife - crash it and set it on fire ;)
that´s pretty sarcastic....

Er.. yes... I was hoping someone wouldn't link those two together!! But moving swiftly on!!!

Speaking of old F1 cars, how about th old 6 wheeled Tyrrell ... :)

LATE 60's F1 CARS! LATE 60's F1 CARS! LATE 60's F1 CARS! GOOD LORD LATE 60's F1 CARS!

Throw in some from the early to late 70's and keep the ones from GT3 and you have... Orgasm: The Real Driving Simulator.

I hope they do histories of the cars, I loved reading about them

it would be cool if they had maybe little video montage's that showed model progression or technological breakthroughs... like A was the first car to introduce Y which evolved into the launch of Z on car B... i knew variables would come in handy one day in real life ;)

Old Le-mans cars from the 60's to 90's. That would be great (imo)!

Back on topic, I don'f think PD can make automotive history cool to everyone, but if you have an interest, than GT2 pretty much takes care of that. Some of the muscle cars and 1960-70's Japanese cars made me re-read a little more about them, and the early Skylines as well (boy, were the 1950's versions ugly!), as well as providing some memory-lane feelings when reading about the 1980's cars.

GT3 basically forgot history, except for the Ford GT40, and a few select cars before 1990 (early Miata, R32, Infini III, an AE86 or two). To really have a complete history of GT cars (let's not go crazy and include a half-dozen Oldsmobile Delta 88's), then the game would likely have to include about 1000 cars. Four-to-five hundred wouldn't be bad, but to give me a reason to have all the cars on two mem cards would be nice.

I think the game won't act as a tool to make people learn their automotive history, but it might spark an interest in learning a little more about them.

I think they can make it fun for everyone. However you would need to be willing to try it first. Sega GT 2002 had a mode called chronicles, while it was a good extra mode it would hardly fulfill what PD want's to achieve. I think maybe the will have a league dedicated to time based races, like in GT3 we have beginner leages, amature and professional maybe we will have a history league dedicated to races set in the 60's and to things like Group C cars only events and forms of motorsport that no longer exist.

Yeah i want PD to have old cars for American to European. It would be fun to race with and old cars such as a cuda or charger or a Jag E type :D ( You get the point.)

I like the idea of racing old vs new, like a 1st gen vs 3rd gen RX-7, or taking on a mk5 Golf GTI in a mint mk1.

There aren't many modern cars that really stir the soul like the cars of the 60s - 80s did. Nowadays it's all about safety cells and MPG and not top speed and looks. Car design has never been so bad and bland, cars all look the same these days and I can't see many modern cars being regarded as classics in 30-40 years time.

Cheers

I recall NFS2 had a movie dedicated to each car, explaining it's development and other such things. That was pretty cool. It would waste disc space for a GT game so an additional disc in a "Making Of" style feature would be good.

Played GT2 for the whole weekend. Again noticed that "Time Trial" of GT2 was the ultimate TT ever in the series (data management, ghost-options, replay "above" camera, switching laps...).

In GT2 intro movie (Losing my Favorite Game) is very obvious that PD had an idea of automotive history long time ago. Also liked the presentation of "car history" in page-style. Scrolling-style as seen in GT3 was bad.

It was such an thrill to play some goldies, despite the horrible graphic :).

Just a point to whoever said Goodwood isn't used...it is. Lots of event go on there.

In response...

Goodwood is used in a relatively small capacity to what it used to be... at one time, I beleive it used to have F1 there...

for someone who is as much a car frewak as me PD probably cant fail :dopey: As long as the information about each car is presented in pages rather than a scross as Amar212 said. That way we won't have to go through it all agian if we miss some of it. The showcase for cars in NFS was definetely one of the games strong points. It gave specs, Spoken information videos and interior veiws as well as slideshows in NFS3 and 4. This would be great to see in a GT game as eagle said there is mo way it would fit on a single disc especially if it is done for all 500 (or more..) cars.

So a lot of you think that mostly F1 and Le Mans cars can teach automotive history? I certainly think that Goodwood is one of the greatest spectacles in history being revived. When I seen the hill climb and the racing on the Goodwood circuit, I was so amazed. Sure, it was modern day, but you have a chance to look at history in fast motion. I've even seen a Mini Cooper... yeah, you read right- a Mini-freaking-Cooper, taking on these big Vauxhall sedans and stuff. The hillclimb thing is like what "Gran Turismo All-Stars" is like. A convergence of past and present. I remember watching that Toyota Tacoma Pikes Peak just RIP UP the circuit at like, less than 50 seconds. It was so cool!

I think if PD can get licensing rights to Goodwood, it would be the singlemost spectacular race to get on, other than Le Mans. And speaking of Le Mans, there should be that Le Mans endurance featuring classic cars. That should also be fun. And it is my most sincere apologies that I forgot the Monterrey Historics. That is also a very great race. What was funny was that last year after Alain de Cadenet ("Victory by Design," select episodes of Speedvision's "Legends of Motorsport") raced his Alfa Romeo, he interviewed... a much younger Alain de Cadenet. Weird... can't imagine myself interviewing myself at 5 years old when I had my afro. Okay, next reply before I lose a few more brain cells!

And speaking of Le Mans, there should be that Le Mans endurance featuring classic cars.

Or what I think would be a better idea. Have the endurance races choose the rival cars depending on what you drive (maybe not for all of them). 3rd Gen RX-7? You race Skylines, Supras etc. Classic GT40? Le Mans cars of that era! F1 car? Again you race against only F1 cars. It would add some replay value to them.

I mean I remember lots of people having to repeat the endurance races in the hopes of getting an F1 car. So why not?

I like that. A bit of variety, can't be that hard to include.

Repeating endurances in hope that you get an F1 car? Heh. You'd BETTER get one with that Mazda Miata endurance! Otherwise, you'd be gypped like hell!

Sorry. This is my first-ever double post. My crappy computer and its connection is to blame.

Happening a lot lately, with no thank you for posting confirmation it's hard to tell if it registered. However if you don't make an alteration it will inform you that it's a duplicate of a post made within the last 5 minutes and ignore it, which is pretty clever.

I'm wondering if people ever read those scrolling textboxes in the game, there is actually information in those.

Eagle, the scrolling marquees under the car descriptions tell a lot for sure. With the Museum Mode being implemented, you may learn more. Eagle, think about it. Any car in the game can be its own encyclopedia entry. They can be chock full of statistics, history, as well as how it compares to other cars in its class. It doesn't matter if the car was the Subaru 360 or the Escudo Pikes Peak, automotive history can be made fun any way, any how.

To me, maybe more one-make race series and special events would make celebrating automotive history. It's just enough to help you appreciate what a car is to the world. More work will have to be done to make it sensational.

I'm just shocked how many people are ignorant of those damn boxes, someone sat down and wrote a LOT for all of those and barely anyone even seems to have noticed they exist. Not just for cars but for tuning as well, I was intrigued to read the limited explanation of the development and life of the TS020. I'm sad but meh.

I don't think it's ignorance, because in GT1 and GT2 the info on each car was done on a seperate screen all on screen at once and you could just jump to the bit you want to know or if that info covered multiple cars to the car you wanted to know about. In GT3 you had to wait until the bit of info you wanted came up an in some cases it meant waiting for several minuets.

I want the 1990 Nissan R90CP, well all the 800-1300 HP cars of that time.. Fine era of racing.. Gimme group C.. And the ole Beetle! :D

Just a thought...black and white mode for replays and some old races? i dont know

old cars are there for statisticall reasons only, more than half of these cars won't be even played by gamers. it's about quantity this time around, because if it was really about celebrating automotive history then they should have Ladas and Vauxhauls in this game as well as a whole lot of other cars which i prefer not mentioning for the sake of not going into that same old argument, but the first latter satrts with Ferrari, oops :dopey: i think i just opened that can of worms again.
so boys and girls give it a rest, the last thing that PD cares about is the passion for Automotive history, this time around my friends it's all about the money :sly:
