So, how do you think they backup saves will be implemented?

Reason I ask is because recently I was told over the phone by a sony rep to delete my install data (not save data), anyways long story short, blu-ray drive died (see thread here https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=141950) So now I'm wondering, since I can't get GT5 to install since the blu-ray drive wont work, and there is that update coming soon to back up your game save, do you think we'll need to load up the game to update it too that? because well, I can't even get my discs to read in the first place, so not sure how well that would do, is it worth to even buy a whole new blu-ray assembly? assuming that is the only problem with my PS3, (didn't really want to buy a whole blu-ray unit for 70 bucks and find out there was something else wrong) It just really stinks they told me to delete my game data and re install and now I can't even get the game to install normally, but I do have the save data still on the PS3, but if it requires me to load the game to get the (Requires an update) message.

So do I buy a blu-ray drive? and if so will there be a way to get my save file backed up without being able to load the disc to get the update since I don't have an install file anymore? Or is it just better for me to buy a slim and get a bundle (Was thinking about it), I was 54% into GT5 with 5,400km and like 130 cars and had golded 35 licenses and golded 90% of the challenges (including that top gear challenge......)

So I ask the community here, what would you do?

As for how they are Implemented, I think they should be able to tell by your sign in ID (that I'm at 54% for example) and be able to use that as a tie to my account, and then if i reinstall my game on another PS3, signing into that account via PSN would unlock that games saves back to where you were by a small file, wife and I were talking about that, that would seem the most common sense way to make it so the save files are tied to a PSN and therefore can still be helpful and people wont abuse it and start making save files available online, which is the whole reason the gamesaves were protected anyways.

Edit : I mean if they have a profiler on gran-turismo.com now where you can see your game % and everything online, I see no reason why they can't tie a PSN to a game save and just download a little file to unlock your file that was saved online.

The normal method would be via XMB, but if they're really concerned about people hacking saves or something then it's possible to do it through the game... I think the first is more likely though.

Yeah, Although if they really wanted to do it for only gran turismo (not sure what other games they'd want to unlock the save backups for) they could just as easily do it via a game update. But who knows, I really hope it's via XMB, because I have no way to even get my game running now to back it up. Other than to buy another blu-ray drive. Waitin' patiently for the update =). Sure havin some pretty big withdraws from the game at the moment the last week lol

i think i would stop playing gt5 if my save got corrupt or my ps3 died. it's really no different from a corrupt memory card, but atleast a memory card(which is not corrupted) can be transfered to another ps2.

I wouldn't be suprised if Sony were linking save games / psn etc to it's new cloud service.. qrioitcity at some point.

it would mean no more save games on hard drives etc everything on the net

The game save should be tied to your PSN. Multiple identities, multiple game saves. I see no reason why this can't work as a deterrent to game save copying and gifting.

And, the bottom line of it all is, what's the greatest HARM to the game? That someone who hasn't played the game much gets all the cars, or that someone that has ground away for months to get his F1 car loses it in a crash, simply because PD want to prevent the former?

Tell you one thing... bet you Kaz has a full Garage without grinding Like the Wind for a month. Take away HIS toys, and make him play the game just like the rest of us (I guarantee that's the main reason why grinding is so necessary... Kaz never had to do it!), and you BET YOUR 🤬 that the game would have come out with many of these issues fixed.

BTW, Shift suffered from the same flaw and EA/SMS were completely unresponsive about changing it. Lost my Level 50 career TWICE, all my cars, win/loss stats, everything. :ouch: At least Kaz says he's going to fix it within a month or so. And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is the difference between Sony/PD and EA/SMS...

I doubt it, do not Sony too much credit and anyways the servers would keep going down and leave Sony open to goodness knows what grief from users... as you wrote... qriotcity. Protecting saves is unnecessary and is just a sign of laziness or ignorance from the game makers. Fortunately more and more are wising up.

As to implementation; it could only be via a game update patch, after which you would then be able to backup the save to eg a USB stick.

So you think, since my blu-ray drive is out, I won't be able to reinstall GT5 to get my game backed up? So I should go ahead and buy a new blu-ray drive then for it?

The people that were saying via XMB is normally for a system update, unless the XMB also updates games, but since my disc won't even "spin" to get the update message, I'm guessing that means I should either buy a PS3 slim bundle or just get a new Blu-ray drive.

If it unlocks via the PSN ID then that leaves out people who don't have the internet or PSN account.

I hope its just like most other games where you can freely copy a save to any account whether they have a PSN account made or not and the only thing that happens is no PSN trophies are attainable. If you want trophies then you must start a fresh save.

I don't have a problem if people want to download a game save file.

What percentage of people that have a PS3 don't have ANY internet access AT ALL? Even a dial-up gets you a PSN account. All you would have to do is take the damn thing over to a friend that DOES have an internet connection and make an account if you don't even have dial-up.

Does anyone think that the 2% of the user base (I'm guessing!) is going to prevent PD from tying it to a PSN? I hope not. Mind you, as grind forcing as this game is, and B-Spec necessary, I certainly wouldn't mind the game save simply unlocked with no further protection. This insane grind for cars, especially B-Spec (I HATE B-Spec, but it's the ONLY way to get certain cars) is without doubt the WORST thing about this game (in a long list of 🤬 stupid things) and game save swapping might repair the damage that this is doing to the game's reputation.

If there were sufficient Events to get all the cars without repeating them, I'd say no game save swaps. But when you have to do the races over and over and over again because PD were too lazy to even have the same number of events as GT4, let alone more, I am a lot more lenient to the idea of cheating.

After all, most of the people that already have most of the really expensive cars did it with the birthday cheat anyway. If one cheat is OK, why not another?

CRXFREAK001 if you know someone else with a PS3 same model (out of warranty) who is willing to allow you to swap bluray drives for 10 mins you could use thiers to instal your game (you need to change the logic board on the bluray though from yours for it to work in yours then back again to his/hers so it work in theirs.) Saves you $70 bucks and at least you can update if a game instal is required.

Do I have to swap the logic board if theirs is the same model as mine? I'm assuming that's all's that is, since mine is a backwards compatible PS3, if the new one is too with the same model of blu-ray drive that'll work right?

I don't know anyone with one an older PS3 model, but I can however just buy one on ebay, and use it permanently or temporarily. and then Just either A: put it back up on ebay and buy a slim or just keep it.

like that one will work without swapping the logic board right? http://cgi.ebay.com/Playstation-3-P...0465147580?pt=Video_Games&hash=item3ef8faa2bc

since it's from the same 60gb model that I have.

No the bluray logic board is locked to the PS3 the same way the HDD is.I use to repair and sell them .. sometimes when the bluray has quit it is not always the lens it can be the logic board on the bluray or sounds daft but a code for the drive to work has got scrambled up and mispaced (pretty much like a pc's the HDD needs a defrag , so a full system restore is needed but this is not an option for you unless you can find someone willing to allow you to back up your ps3 hdd on to thiers then transfer back ?) If you could use another drive it would also answer the question is it your lens at fault ? or something else. Hope it helps you as you could spend $70 and it still not read discs ( it is rare but possible).

I know tons about electronics, been soldering and tinkering and programming for a long time, I however probably know a lot less about the PS3 blu-ray drives than you do, so if you would like to hop over to my thread here https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=141950 maybe you can take a look and guess. I know with electronics it's better to have it in your hand to see the whole thing and test everything for yourself, it's like that with all things, but maybe what I said in there might give you an idea of something that may of happened.

Thanks in advance! :)

If you have MSN or something let me know, we can talk over there and chat a bit about some things, I'd greatly appreciate it. =)

If your going to get a slim anyway don't spend the extra money on a extra blue ray drive just hook your new slim up to the PS3 with the bad blue ray drive with a LAN cable and use the built in data transfer utility which can move protected saves.

well yeah, I knew that much, problem is, GT would have to be allowed to xfer save files, and seeing as if the game update is via the game rather than XMB, I have no way to even start it up, seeing as my disc can't even spin to start the update, see what I mean?
