How does online matchmaking works?

Hi,

I'm a bit curious on how this matchmaking system in GT5: Prologue works. Is it based on the person's ability (like some sort of success ratio) or is it just based on the person's online connection? I played a couple of online matches and from what I've read, whoever starts pole position is the online host for that for game but what baffles me is that most of the races I've played I start on pole but I know my internet connection is not that fast at all (its apparantly less than 1MB according to some speedtest results). So can anyone clarify on the system?

From what I have noticed after SPEC II it changed.

Now you can see who is a host during "participants list" moment (that with gray background) but in race cars are set in order of QTS points - who has the most points goes to the end of a grid and who hes less goes to the top.
At least I had that kind of experience - I used Ferrari 599 in Suzuka race (max power to minimum, weight to max R3 tires) and I had something like 600QTS points ? do not remeber but on the grid I was like 12 but started first...

From what I've seen online theres a couple of things, yes the quickest cars in a race start at the back but the matchmaking seems to be working not just on a connection speed criteria. As an example I took one track and just kept racing online, race after race. I used the high speed race on standard with the mid level cars. at first I was getting a time of 3.03 for the whole race, prety consistantly, and so was the rest of the field (obviously slower the futher back they finished) now I kept seeing the same people in these races those who finished in the front group with me. I then got used to it and started getting 1st consistantly by breaking away from the pack and positioning myself so the second place guy couldn't get a tow, I started getting 2.58 race times at this point then after a couple of races, the people in the race changed. Now these guys were all cranking 2.58s and I was back running in the front of the pack rather than scooting off in front. It seems the matchmaking system also works on your lap times and puts you in a field of drivers who all get similar times! This system was also used in PGR3 and it works very well! After the initial few races of dodgeing eratic drivers I was soon being put in a field of clean racers

Since yesterday I'm racing Suzuka 650 race all over again and what can I say is that 99% of drives are clean !!
Oh and it is good to use "not so powerfull car" tactics - I use 649pts and I start in the middle, thats always 7seconds less to "work"... ;)

Thanks guys for the clear up. I only just started playing so I got alot of work to do then. During races I try my best to race clean (like if they were on the inside and have the speed to take position I give them enough room to do so). Is there any penalty system which penalise drivers that drive aggressively or just sabotage the online game by quiting? I know when I almost on the verge of winning my first online race (on the final stretch in 1st) I got disconnected from the server assuming the host had just quit. I'm still pretty upset by that!

I do not know about that but 25 minutes of BAN from online play would be quite nice for such a people - I myself had that experience about 4times - I was in top 5, host got out of the track at the end of the race he quits and we are off - its not only not wining the race, its also loosing some money and our precious time ... :grumpy:
