How does the racing line work exactly?

Hi guys, could anybody please explain how the racing line works? Obviously braking when the line gets red is much too early. So how does racing with the helping line work?

I've found that the racing line is only of any use when learning new tracks, but the braking points do seem off, in the end there really is no better way to learn the tracks than by practicing different braking points with the racing line off.

The racing line assist is basically training wheels. Honestly the best thing to do is turn off the line and practice without it.
