How good are your eyes?

I'm 16-19 and I scored 15 the first time and 11 immediately after. So I'm saying 13. I'm going to give it another go though when I'm not as tired etc. Not bad though, fairly pleased for now.
 
The primary reason most people use OS X for design work is due to what they teach in programs. I know plenty of professionals that use Windows all the time. I myself edit photos on Dell Ultrasharps and Win7. Oddly enough, I also scored better than you and I don't even have a spider to do my calibration.

Agreed. Any decent mid-to-highend design/photography workers, scrap the Mac display and use something from Eizo/NEC/Dell.

The difference between a cheap TFT panel and a quality one is clear, and then you can have E-IPS and IPS.

Used a $99.00 19" monitor, couldn't complain. My problem was in the areas just away from blue.
 
FYI, smart guy, the work space color profile is different, the display is either TFT or IPS, depending on the run of the monitor. It has little to do with the operating system and entirely to do with the hardware. A Windows, Linux, or whatever system plugged into a S-IPS display will show the same colors as a Mac.

Yes the quality of your monitor matters, but it's the default gamma settings that are different whether you are on a mac or a pc. I can have the best monitor in the world hooked up to a pc and it still will look different than on a mac. Only if I go to make a new color profile can I make them the same. In this case I'm sure everyone in here who has a pc has not made new gamma profile making my mac colors look totally different from all of you. Day one graphic design they say you can get either PC or OS X, but they all use OS X and you will be laughed at, at major companies if you do not use OS X since it's the industry standard. If you are working for web only you could get away with a PC to work, but if the work is going to print, good luck getting the colors to match. It will come out insanely different and impossible to fix since on screen it will always looked wrong compared to how it actually prints. Been there many times when I noticed a mistake at Kinko's and had to use their PC's to fix it. All the colors look horrible compared to how I designed it.

You're not going to get more accurate colours just because you use OSX.

I said ya you can calibrate them to be fairly the same, but in this case I said I'm using a Mac and something about colors being different and some guy told me my Mac has nothing to do with different colors. Well considering my defaults are different than anyone here with a pc my colors would look better. If everyone who did the test with a pc changed their settings to look closer to Mac defaults than his statement would be correct. Since probably 100% of them didn't, me being on a Mac does make the colors in this test look different do to different default color profiles.

Though I think what you're trying to say is that the default settings on Mac look better than the default settings on Windows. Which may be the case, but remember that modern day iMacs use relatively decent IPS displays (compared to the junk most Windows users use (Junk in regards to colour accuracy)), and because it's standard hardware across the platform, Apple can get a more accurate default calibration across the board.

Lol you have to go back and read what I said originally. All I said was pretty much I'm excited to try this because I have a Mac with better color display. Of course people gotta tell me how it doesn't matter blah blah so I explained how it is different for this.

Designing for print is better to use a Mac because it's closer to how it will look printed. Designing for web doesn't matter because there is more PC's in the world so most people will view the site with default PC color anyway. Actually printing doesn't matter which type of computer you use either because although it will look different on the screen you have already designed it on a Mac and know how it will look printed. So having a PC hooked up to run the printer is only for pressing print not for actually designing what will be printed.

Edit: since you added more to your post, ya I am commenting on this color test in this thread. Not real life printing or how companies do things. My default Mac color is different from the windows users in here doing the test which theoretically will give me an advantage to do good since my colors will be more accurate. I didn't even do the test when I said this I just said I can't wait to do this hopefully I do good since I have a Mac.

You do realise that Adobe Creative Suite is identical on both platforms? I can freely switch between the two, I use a PC/Mac at home and a Mac when I'm at uni doing layouts for magazines and papers. The design process is exactly the same, you just have cmd and option instead. Macs being seen as better for design is just a carry over from the 90's.

Also, your assertion about Macs being more colour accurate for print is moot, as Casio said any publishing company will have calibrated everything (printers and screens) anyway. I've designed and printed from my PC and the colours come out matched, I've printed and designed from a Mac and the colours are matched, I've printed files processed on Windows through a Mac and vice versa, and guess what, the colours were matched. Calibrate your stuff properly and you avoid massive headaches.

It's obviously not just used for pressing Ctrl+P, otherwise it wouldn't have a $6,000 monitor hooked up to it. It's much more accurate than the standard iMac screens, and is used to make the final adjustments before the final print due to it's incredible accuracy.
 
Lol whatever people, I do design work every day I know how it all works. I'm not trying to explain how it works to any of you. Please go back to my first post and read from there you will see how it all went off track. PC users have different default color settings than Mac users. That's the truth and that's all I'm trying to say.

Clearly you do not have a clue what you are talking about.

I do prints and design as well, I have basically calibrated E-IPS monitors. I do not use the Windows default color profiles. My workspace settings are for CMYK with whatever ICC profile matches the printer I'll be using.

Did you see all the bits where I changed things around? No one that is worth their beans will be using default anything in the design process or for printing. Unless they are a horrible scrub. I can switch to the color profiles used in OS X and vice versa. And again, anyone serious would use a custom profile, calibrated using a spider for each separate display.

As for the display, it will only matter if you are using the newer 27" Cinema displays. And not the 27" one the iMac has, which is still a TFT display. My colors will look better than those, period. Why? E-IPS. If you don't really understand the importance of those things, you really, honestly, have no clue what you are talking about when it comes to managing colors. Macbook Pros are also still on TFT screens, last I checked. So I again have both a superior display and color profile to anything Apple has for a default. This isn't an argument, it is a fact.

As for design versus print, the major difference is you will be working with the RGB gamut in mind rather than the CMYK gamut. Which again, is easily managed through proper calibration and workspace in the Adobe suites. Which are virtually identical between platforms, minus the cmd versus ctrl keys and some aspects of managing windows if you aren't in a full screen mode.

I work on OS X machines (1 year old 27" iMacs) at school, in guess what, the GFX design department. So I get to see how my work translates between both, along with my photography. The more amusing bit is my home system, with 3 screens and superior specs in every way, is less of an investment than the base iMac. My displays are vastly superior.

If you want to keep insisting that colors will look different in print from PC versus OS X, it just means you aren't managing your color space correctly. Blues will look like junk if you edit in an RGB work space and then print in CMYK, because, well, CMYK can't hit the same range.

I didn't realize the industry was a bunch of hipsters. Pretty sure a solid portfolio is a solid portfolio. The end. And they generally don't mind when the user is happy with a system setup that costs half as much, or even less.

Speaking of which, do you work for a company, and if so, what one?
 
I got a 0 on that color test because I basically have to. But perfect color vision doesn't help much when my glasses are an inch thick. :lol:

After a some exposure to color science and optical illusions you learn how to avoid those "tricks". Just move the swatch back and forth and eventually you'll land in the middle where it should be.

I find moving my work from the laptop to the Macs at uni the yellows become much stronger on the Macs. I am told they have all been calibrated correctly and we have had several lectures about monitor calibration.
Now using a Samsung B2430HD as a secondary for the laptop and it also has the stronger yellows, so I am happy. Although I must admit I have not calibrated this monitor, but I think that could be down to the fact that I can't seem to calibrate it through the laptop, annoyingly (any help on this would be much appreciated). Either way, calibrated or no calibrated, I scored a 3 and I was in a rush, so...

I haven't had such an eyesight test that estimates how well I'm able to see objects around yet... But quite interested in that. guess mine isn't very good any longer, or at least it's not as good as before I got hooked on regular use of my own computer, which is burdensome to my eyes.:rolleyes:
 
Retook the test as I said I would on a different monitor (my usual one a 32" Samsung TV).

Got 3 as the score. The blues are the hardest...
