How Good Is The GTR?

Big, heavy, turbocharged cars can be fun if you find the space to wring them out. That's if. An MX-5 is more fun at all times. You don't even need to break the speed limit to have fun in one.

Funny how the MX5 always gets dragged into these conversations. It was always about the GTR and it got turned into a comparison.. I would find a way to have fun in a GTR on public roads. Simple as that!

The MX5 and GTR I think are both midlife crisis cars. Only difference is the old fart driving the GTR probably has a lot more money.

Except if its on fire. Then I'd rather be in the GT-R. I can't imagine that being in a Ferrari has any improving effect on being engulfed in flames.

I thought it was only 458s that went up in flames...

If the MX5 is a midlife crisis car then I'm only going to live to 48.

I guess the MR-S would fall into that category as well

And Punknoodle, you simply are not going to find a safe place on public roads to really put the GT-R at its limits. Hell, I have enough trouble with the M3 doing that.

What? Your local car scene must be very different than mine. Most of the miata drivers at our autox events are 20-30 years old. Nearly everyone I've met who owns a miata for the purpose of driving (autocross/track) is in the same sort of age group.

It's good as even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anything can. Can the GTR really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that it has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense.

I enjoy accelerating. You don't have to break the speed limit. Driving a car that can do 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds has to be fun.

Some complain about the GTR AWD being boring. I am not a professional driver so I like the fact that it won't step out on me so easily. Great acceleration and great handling. The GTR is hard to beat.

I think if they gave the GT-R an Italian sounding name it could easily sell at double its price :)

Actually, that is illegal in some states now. Just saying.

Also, at numbers fixation.

I'm not familiar with any local car scenes here. I'm talking in general about cars I see every day on regular roads, not minority groups.

Edit:

That said, I just googled 'demographics miata owners'. I kid you not, the first search result reads 'I am a 50 year old male Miata owner'. Further searching led me to a survey result of a Miata forum which showed the age group 46-55 to have the most Miata owners.

I know there are probably quite a few younger Miata owners here but that is hardly surprising given that this is a driving simulator video game forum.

Big and powerful are thrilling... to a point. If you're too well insulated from the road, you won't be enjoying it as much. The MX-5 gets brought up a lot because the older ones aren't. You feel every bump, every gust of wind, every crenellation in the road surface under the tires... there's gearbox whine, road noise, engine thrash... it's a very involving experience.

Some sports cars are like that... but not quite to that extent. It's that kind of rawness that you are missing from a GT-R... something you can get from a 911 GT3RS or possibly even an M3 (which is racuous, twitchy and harsh).

Perhaps you have a different idea of what a mid-life crisis car is.

*Cough*Porsche*Cough* Want another? Lol, sorry. Yeah, Miata's are mainly owned by old people, but I figure I'll even out those odds when I get a license.

Wow, one 360 going up in flames in over a decade? Guess that's going to put people off buying one of the tens of thousands they produced... ;)

He said stomach twice in the same sentence.

Lets put it this way then, the miata is not a traditional "mid-life crisis" car, the newest one has what, 170hp? You can buy an accord with more power. Mid-life crisis cars are traditionally fast and look cool to the general public. The miata is slow (in a line) and has the stigma of being for gay men, women, secretaries, etc.

Fairly off topic though, so in an attempt to be more on point I'll offer my thoughts on the GTR. I know it's fast as all get out, and I don't subscribe to the "driving a video game" mentality of the car being too easy to drive. If the car is too easy to drive you're just not driving it hard enough. I doubt putting those Ring times down was "easy" and "uninvolved". Personally though, it doesn't do anything for me. I'd take nearly any other car in the same price-range and class.

As far as the daily driver goes, a friend of mine has a Cayman S and stopped daily driving it because it was boring. He now only drives it on the track and at autox events and daily drives a little Honda. Similarly, with limits as high as they are in the GTR, if you're having fun, you're likely at risk of getting a ticket. (Yes, you can even get a ticket for accelerating too quickly.)
