How long can you hold your breath for while underwater?

Does anybody know any figures on the avg time people can hold there breath?

Also does holding your breath longer mean you can store more oxeygen?

And one last question if you can hold your breath long does that mean you have good cardivascular?

My best is 1min 48seconds, which isnt to bad, but its nothing compared to the world record:crazy:

I think i could probably push 2mins if I was in the right mood and wasnt tired at all.

Small_Fryz, how's that you put 3+ minutes? I think there's a very thin line between 3+ and drowned. :nervous:

Anyhow, there's no mention of 17 seconds, so I just clicked on the nearest.

Actually, there's a HUGE margin between 3 and the 8+ minutes which is the world record...

Think 120 meters down, then back up, in 1 breath !...

Funny you should ask, i went swimming yesterday and tried, i managed to keep it held for 2 and a half minutes while mushroom floating.

My pal managed 1 minute:D

You can get a little extra out of it if you hyperventilate before going under, as it builds up a supply of oxygen in the blood.

Without hyperventilating, I can do it for about 30-35 seconds or so. With it, I can extend it to about 45-50.

I used to be able to hold it well over a minute, but that was a long time ago. :) Now I'm old. And a smoker, that probably doesn't help. :)

Ashley.

You've almost got the Static Apnea World Record then :) You only need to hold it for another 6 minutes and 28 seconds

Underwater I have no idea but lying down in bed (big difference, no panicing, and no energy expend keeping yourself under) I used to be able to do about 2:20. That was about three years ago but I can also only imagine it being better since then.

Just sitting here at comp and normally inhaling I can get 1:02 which is the option I voted.

but lying down I can exceed 2 minutes

I can hold my breath until I run out of a comfortable level of oxygen.

Probably like 30 seconds....I dunno. I can hold a note for a very long time, though.

I don't think you're doing it right.

Without hyperventilating I can get 48-52secs. After hyperventilating I can go close to 3mins.

You've got to do it for about a minute to really get your oxygen levels up. BE CAREFUL though - it is a bit dangerous. If you start to get an iron taste in your mouth it's about time to stop. You can do yourself some damage from hypervenilating like this so I in no way endorse this activity.

Marines use it before they have to perform a big dive for whatever reason. It is very effective for increasing breath length.

In my chair, I just did 1 min 30 seconds. I think I can go longer, but the longest I've held my breath was around like a minute and 48 seconds or something like that.

I used to hold my breath for over three minutes when I was younger. Right now, I'm not trying it. I have a bit of a flu attacking me, and I have a bad headache.

The trick is "pump" air into your lungs after inhaling a big breath. You take fast, short inhales of air after filling your lungs with your big inhale. Do it until you're full, which could be up to 20 pumps of air. That's the secret.

I’ve done over 2 minutes when I was 12 or 13… I can only imagine that my lung capacity is bigger now, but I’m in worse shape. :indiff:

Talk about consistency. I tried again, hoping to beat my minute thirty. I got minute thirty one. :D

ive held my breath for over 2 mins before but i didnt have a choice!!!!

was sailing at a regatta and boat capsized and i was stuck in it!!!!

I have a fairly good lung capacity and ability to hold my breath. About 1'50 is my best with sheer determination. Im sure I could go 2'00 if my life was at stake.

I used to be able to hold it around 3 mins but I used to swim underwater all time when I was a kid, probably about 2 now.

when free diving or just swimming at the reef... about 30 seconds max
when sitting in a chair or just curled up as a ball while floating... 1 minute, 1 minute 30 seconds maybe

what's hyperventilating?

2.04 is my record. Did 2 exactly underwater. i gotta try hyperventilating.....brb

EDIT: i find this a great choice of activity when you finish early in an exam...

RE-EDIT: holy ship, just did a 2min 24. ok heres a question, how far can you swim underwater? i mean completly underwater, not just face submerged. Ive managed the length of my local swimming pool, 25m. Anyone beaten that?

I was quite good at swimming in apnea when I was in College. I was able to do at least two lenghts of our pool underwater, so 2x25m. Probably more than that doing crawl without breathing.

One time we tried underwater hockey, but on a pool that didn't have a flat bottom, so the deep side goal was a lot harder. I think I managed to scored 9 out of our 11 goals, by staying underwater longer than most did.
