I searched for this topic a lot, but couldn't find any related topics, so don't get mad at me if I duplicated a thread? I have one question about the developers: How long has Polyphonic Digital been working on GT4?

I would like to know how much hard work PD has put into the game. :)

4 years...you sure about that?
Well, I believe it... after all, GT3 was rushed because of PS2's lack of "killer-apps" during it's first years of production. Possibly, the work in GT4 was already happening during GT3's final stages of development.

I believe the ground Work was already started by some members of the PD team, while production of GT3 was drawing to an end.
So at least 3 1/2 years.

Here's the truth , PD released GT3 in July 2001 .They released the Japanese GT CONCEPT in November 2001 , and then the Euro GT CONCEPT in July 2002. Immediately after that they started working on GT4. So it's been taking more than 2 years in development, but game concepts and outline existed a lot before.

What makes you think they didn't work on multiple projects simultaneously? Square-Enix does it alot. I have a little experience in Software Design, and planning and concept pieces are very much part of production and should be considered so.

Whether it's four years or four seconds, the game has been through so much. You know. Tracks, cars, graphics, features, multiplay, that sort of thing. As I said on and off again, Gran Turismo 4's release won't be like Duke Nukem Forever. And as of the date of this reply, who has DNF? I thought so. After "Duke Nukem 3D" in 1994 and "Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition" in 1996, 3D Realms was steadily working on Duke Nukem Forever. It has experimentation with the Quake 2 engine. Afterwards, they looked into the first-gen Unreal engine. The game could have been out about six years ago with a secquel to follow. Instead, it's been in creation since 1996 or 1997. And for now, Duke Nukem Forever was told to be completed "when it's done."

Gran Turismo 4, on the other hand, will most likely be where GT3 left off from. Some would even say that GT4 will probably be was GT3 was lacking (except maybe online play, because the Network Adapter probably wasn't out by GT3's release). Or to put it in another way, GT4 will probably be what GT3 meant to have. However, GT3 still remained a sugar-sweet game. To make a weird analogy, GT3 is more like dating the girl/boy of your dreams while GT4 will be like the girl/boy who you love so much for personality and character, and she's/he's so good that you'd damn near marry her/him. Reagardless, the time was well worth it, Carlover325. I don't think this has been mentioned before, so you have nothing to fear.

Another question answered, the John way (expect a sarcastic comment, John). Have a great day.

PD is not Square- Enix. There are only 30 full-time developers in PD , when it comes to special occasions and they need more talents , they hire them. This way , right now there are +70 developers in PD , 40 of them hired. When it comes to concepts , KY said that he had been planning for Gran Turismo since he was a 15 years old boy.

ive always said that i wish GT4 would be like GT2 with GT3 graphix, and by the look of GT4 PROLOGUE its going to be way beter than i imagined

They can still develope multiple games, weather it be as simple of laying the groundwork for the next game while you produce the last, maybe by gathering data from the cars for both games together. Or by creating content for one game in a modular way so it can be used in the next game as well. All these things should be taken into account when deciding how long developement has taken.

It is just that i think there was significant planning towards GT4 before the concept versions were complete, much like there are already plans set out for GT5. The level of planning which has taken place for GT5 is arguable though, weather they have set themselves a schedule yet i can't claim to know, but such things as scheduling are definitely developement steps.

Duke Nukem 3D did not come out in 1994.

Wolfenstein 3D came out in 92, Doom 93, Doom 2 94, Hexen 95 (Heretic had a weird release so not entirely sure about that), Duke Nukem 3D 1996, Quake 96. Atomic pack came afterwards. ;) But even in 1996 Duke 3D had been delayed which is maybe why you thought 1994.

As I reported in another thread I saw PD staff at Magny-Cours in June 2001 and that was just before the Euro release of GT3 so I think its been in development (more or less) for over 3 years now.
