my first car was a 1980 bmw 318i, in the E21 series. i slowly grew to hate it. sure it had a stock (never rebuilt) engine with 340000km on it that could chop a brand new FF lancer up hills, sure it was RWD and had IRS and fuel injection and a nice interior for its time and all that. but it was so expensive to fix when things broke! i'll never own another eurocar because of that thing

since then i've owned a slew of corollas, 1969 to 1975 and several years inbetween :sly:

Okay, small list... only 19 and not much time to amass yet ;)

1994 Toyota Tercel ST - Red (Totaled)
1987 Toyota MR2 - Red (Current project)
1987 Toyota MR2 - Black (Fried the 20V in it)
1999 Toyota Corolla VE - White (Driving it)

The Tercel was my first car, got me to like Toyota, and since it was cheap and easy to maintain, got the crap driven out of it. Hit a Hyundai with it when I was still 16, and I drove it home... Hyundai didn't fair as well :p Finally died after I had put 50k miles on it when I stopped to avoid a dog, and some lady nailed me with her Nissan Pathfinder...

The MR2, the red one, was bought when I still had the Tercel as a project on the side. Its about ready to start running, and is in pretty decent condition for the body and even the engine, just needed small things.

The black MR2 is fully tuned, with Ground Control coilovers, Tokico 5 ways, sway bars, struts bars, TRD clutch, TRD short shifter, TRD brakes and lines, Momo racing seats, 4 point belts, Erebuni bumpers and spoiler, and the 20V 4A-GE swap with intake, exhaust, and ECU. Fun car till oil had issues and I nuked the engine. When I get done rebuilding the red MR2, gonna sell it and take the money from that to get a new Silver top 4A-Ge for the black MR2.

Corolla, my current driver. However, some problems wtih the seller... like him flat out telling me it had never been damaged when I asked... and me later finding out it had been rebuilt... after he had manged to get a check from me... is leading to some "ifs" for this car. Trying to get the difference in value from him, or a return. More likely its gonna have to go to small claims court. The car is fun to drive, though the high way tires on it suck, and the suspension is way to understeer happy. The 1ZZ is a peppy engine, and the car has potential.

Future plans down the road involve me just working on the MR2 and the Corolla (if I keep it), with the hopes of getting an IS300 to be my people hauler in good weather, and let the Corolla be the winter car. However, me being teh broke college student I am... is gonna make this tricky. Hopefully, I can find a used IS300 with the manual tranny in a few years... in black of course :sly:

M5: Your first car was a ~90 Cressida? Please tell me you didn't start driving untill you were 35 :nervous:
Too... much... jealousy...

Not really his daily driver, considering we've got 4 seasons up here. It's his 5th NSX, and I couldn't fit in any of the 4 other all too well.
How tall are you and could you discribe exactly how you didn't fit?
(< is ~6'2", wants NSX eventually)

Cars we've owned in the time we've been in North America
Really beat up 1st gen Mazda RX-7 looking car. All any of us remembers is that it was a Mazda. It died after about 5 years :(
1988 Ford Aerostar - ran like crap but my dad was constantly pushing it past 100mph :p. My mom got into her first accident with it. Nothing major but I took a hard hit to the head by something. Almost total electronics failure by the end of it's life (the entire instrument panel was non-functional). Sold
1991 Nissan Sentra 2-door (gxe I think). My bro's first car. My dad bought it for him. Still my favourite car out of the ones our family owned.
1993 Toyota Previa - decent van, but for some reason it was the car I threw up in most while I was growing up. The Aerostar was 2nd. Sold
1991 Plymouth Caravan or something like that. Crappy van but it ran, got stolen

That's all of them for the US, now for the cars we have had in Canada:
1997 Ford Aerostar. My mom got into her 2nd car accident in it. I got hit in the head pretty hard. Sold
1993 Honda Accord - I love it, I hate it. Drives decently but it can't accelerate at all and lots of mechanical probs. It needs major work on the tranny, a completely new set of pipes, a new front passenger door (the current one doesn't lock with a key, it leaks water into the car, and the window doesn't close all the time).
1997 Honda Civic - my bro's 2nd car. He treats it like crap. He never takes it for maintenance, and he leaves part repairs till they fail completely. Just recently, he had to replace all 4 tires, the brake rotors, the driveshaft, and the timing belt. The rotors and driveshaft could have been prevented if he had the shaft repaired sooner and the brake pads changed sooner. He's also got a big dent by the rear fender and of course, the instrument panel doesn't work

Seems like your Mum always crashes Aerostars. I think they're nasty cars. They deserved it. :)

A BMW with 340,000km! I'm amazed it even started. Even more amazing you said the engine was never rebuilt. Did you sell it or scrap it?

Well you guys in America are so lucky. Cars are cheaper over there and fuel costs alot less. In the UK the prices are ridiculous. Guess I'll have to live in America to get my first decent car. (when I'm old enough to drive!)

M5Power has me beat with his huge list but I can try to come close to it. I will start in the order that I owned them.
1. 1967 Chevy truck 350 engine (hand me down from dad) Loved this truck!

Agreed. Our 2nd one had a nasty habit of spinning like a top if there was a bit of snow on the road and it was trying to accelerate up a hill. Damn sucky van regardless of what anyone crams into it for features 👎

1. 1990 GEO Tracker (Parents tried to sell it, no-one wanted it. Still drive it daily, 30 mpg and 4x4!)
2. 198? Plymouth Voyager Turbo (Mom kept it too long couldn't get what it was worth trading it and I ended up with it. It was fun, I did mods they talk about at www.turbominivan.com and had loads of fun at the local drag strip beating Camaros and Mustangs, had to sell it when I got the truck couldn't afford 3 insurance bills, my friend Mike still drives it daily)
3.1985 Chevy 4x4 Pickup (My baby, she is currently striped down to her frame rails for a full rebuild, planning a 383SB/TH400/AtlasII/Dana60/Corp14Bolt)
4. 1991 GEO Tracker (Bought for $50, used as a beater, blew the engine, now a frame doner for a friend's Metro dragster)
5. 1996 Chrystler Town & Country (Again another van mom kept to long and couldn't get what she wanted for it on a trade in, still the only car I have owned with a CD player, it was fun to drive because it had the 3.9V6 with towing package, mom knows how to buy vans, sold it to a friend that still uses it to haul his band's stuff around)
6. 1979 Chevy 2x4 Pickup (350 4-bolt engine/TH400 trans, bought it for $300, it had a brand new front clip, used as a beater of a month now an engine/tranny/front clip doner for my baby I always liked the 1979's front ends better then the 1985's)

Wow I have owned 6 vehicals already, not including bikes, quads, and snowmobiles.....

Wow, this should be interesting.

1962 Ford Thunderbird Landau my first car. Dad bought it for mom as a wedding present in 1962. I asked him to keep it for me in 1966. He did. Mom sold it a few months after he died. I wept bitterly.

1969 Austin America my dad bought it as a "toy". I learned manual tranny on it. Then "stole" it every chance I got when my dad bought my next car.

1978 VW "breadbox" Van The first vehicle owned by my wife and me. Bought it from my dad for a buck. It had "issues" but it served us well.

1982 Nissan Sentra Bought it used in 1984 with 50,000 miles on it. Drove it for about ten years, and thru indifferent maintenance it survived well. On the two occasions it did break, it broke big. But if I did my part, it would pull down 50+ MPG.

1977 Olds Cutlass Supreme Bought it as a second car to get around town while we were in college. For the month it ran it was an okay car. It needed a transmission but the GM small-block ran fairly well. I still can't talk about this POS in front of my wife without making her mad.

1985 Pontiac 6000 LE Left to us by my wife's grandma. Still was too expensive. The guy at the Pontiac dealer knew the VIN by heart, cause he had it almost as much as we did.
Once it was finally sorted out, it proved to be a decent car.

1988 Pontiac 6000 Given to us by my wife's mom after she bought a Lumina. Few problems till the last year we owned it. It died unceremoniously the day after my 36th birthday.

1992 Plymouth Voyager It was either the last one built on a Friday or the first one built on a Monday, after a wild weekend of partying. It required major engine rebuilding 3 times in 10 years. The first time the top end needed to be rebuilt was at 60,000 miles. I must say that I was somewhat relieved when my son totalled the damn thing. Even though, it had only about 10,000 miles on the current rebuild.

1992 Ford Escort GT Bought to replace the 1988 Pontiac. It served me well, And even in its "infirmity" (no compression in #2 cyl) it still started right up, even after sitting for months. I considered repairing it, but it needed brakes all-around, two new tires, and a valve job. Which totalled way more than it's "blue book" value. The Ranger (below) only cost me $4,080. The $80 being the new battery.
The "Super 'Scort" would have been about $2500 to make road worthy. And that's more than I paid for it when I bought it!

1989 Ford Probe Bought specifically for the kids by my wife's mom. A POS, but a sturdy POS. As my boys get older and either get better cars, or prove themselves safe enough to drive mom and dad's cars (mostly mom's) the Probe becomes the "starter vehicle" for the next younger brother.

1999 Toyota Camry My wife's commuter. We've only had it a few months, but it has proven to be a good 'un, thus far.

1996 Ford Ranger most of you have heard the saga of the "Tonka Truck". It's still going strong. My son tried to get the keys from me just this morning due to his car being low on fuel. He got my gas card instead.

1999 Chevy/Geo Metro Inhereted when my wife's father died. My eldest son's primary ride, though he shares it with my #2 son. It's claim to fame is that it pulls down 40+ MPG.

2001 Chevy Venture The first van that we've ever had that has seats for every body.
It is now pretty much for "Sunday go to meeting", and for family trips. Hope to replace it soon with a Ford Expedition. It will then be relegated to a back-up for the kids, and "Sunday go to meeting".

Honorable mention to the 1971 Ford Galaxie that was my mom's main ride till dad bought her a 1974 Mercedes 280 in 1980. The Galaxie was one of my back-ups as it got way better mileage than my T-bird. Which was real important with min. wage being $3.35/hr, and gas for the 'Bird being (leaded premium) at $1.40 a gallon, even back in 1981.

A BMW with 340,000km! I'm amazed it even started. Even more amazing you said the engine was never rebuilt. Did you sell it or scrap it?

apparently they regularly do last that long. the clutch in it was still good until i tried to tow one of my corollas with it :p i agree it is a crapload of km though. haven't owned anything with over 150,000km since. there's a guy in this forum somewhere who's got a 89 acura integra with 300,000 MILES on it, and someone else reckons it doesn't need a rebuild until it reaches 400!

i sold the bimmer to a mate who put another 10,000km on it decided it was a good idea to drive it with a leaky radiator. they're fairly hot running motors, so it cooked itself good. he spent 1500 bucks retting the head RECONDITIONED (not worked or anything, stock!), then the mechanic wanted him to rebuild the bottom end too. pistons were a grand on their own (as opposed to the $161 brand new oversize set in my corolla), so that idea went out the window pretty quick and he sold the car to the wreckers for a few hundred bucks

it had a new $300 bosch motorsport fuel pump on it (that's what they run stock) and a rare alpina spolier so hopefully some bmw nerd found it before it got cubed

now that i think of it, i would own another one, but it would have to be a bmw 2002 (from the 70s) and i'd buy one with everything already done to it so it didn't cost me heaps to maintain. then i'd put something in it like a nissan ca18det (which is funnily enough what i want to put in my corolla)

heheh isn't this what doing up cars is all about? i once bought a car for $250 and spent 7 grand on it :P then pulled it apart and sold it for $250 minus the $2000 engine :sly: my current car cost me $1500 and has had another, oh, $3500 spend on it since then. you think that's bad economy, my best mate has an impreza wrx, which cost him $30k, he's spent another $30k on it, and you can buy ones modified the same or similar these days for about $20k

your escort would have been phat with a bigvalve head, david vizard bottom end and twin sidedraft webers, stipped out race interior, rollcage, falcon diff- oh sorry honey no room you'll have to drive your car too ;)

1988 Volvo 740 GLE -- friggin rocked. 280k miles on the original motor. Had a bad meeting with a telephone pole. (toast)

1988 Jetta GLi - I love her to death. I've had her for hmm 4.5 years now. Lots of performance work, she's really fun to drive, though ever since I started riding sportbikes she's felt slow.. go figure, hehe. Crossed the country 3 times, once pulling my GSXR and most of my gf and I's wordly possessions. Actually had a tango with a tree in this, (wasn't my fault, long story that still gets me angry), and decided to fix her.

1987 Ford Laser - hand me down. Was first owned by a little old lady who drove around carefully but it's on it's last legs now. Just about to tick (tappet noise - pun not intended) over 140,000km. 3 speed auto :indiff:

Hopefully soon to be 1997 Ford Escort GLX.

After that will probably be a 1993 Honda Integra VTiR.

Actually, in some ways it is exactly what doing up cars is about. And I could afford to do all the stuff it needed. But I wasn't going to "hot up" the 'Scort for my kids to drive.
Plus, the wife was already complaining about how narrow it was inside. But the air and heat were still good, and I got about 70,000 miles out of the little "junk titled" beast for $2200 + gas oil and 2 sets of tires. It was supposed to be my "interim" car while I found something cheap, newer, and even more reliable.
I intended to drive it about a year, and hand it down to the kids. I drove it for almost 4 years, and put it in automotive intensive care.

i know, i was joking you :sly: you'd like a story my boss tells me, of this mk1 cortina he used to own when he was a young fella. he bought the car for something like $2500, throughout the years a few things happened to it, like it got minor acid overspray at his work so he got cash to fix the paint and never bothered doing it. turns out, at the end of 8 years after selling it, he'd paid for petrol and servicing, and the money evened out so the car cost him the grand total of zero dollars :) now that's economic transportation 👍

91 acura integra rs -daily driver (wrecked)
90 honda crx -wangan machine (gave it to dad)
76 Datsun 280Z-restoration/rb20det project (sold)
84 Toyota Corolla/AE86 - touge/daily drifter (current)

the 280z project was sold unfinished to help with some of the costs of the corolla, the crx is back to stock, and now my dad drives it since i prefer to drive my corolla the integra i wrecked within the first 3 weeks of owning it, the corolla has suspension tuned for touge, soon new motor (current motor is takin a dump) finishing up work on the suspension, and install hicomp 4AG-E w/ dual sidedraft 45mm webber carbs..

I'm 17 and don't have a car owner history yet, but my grandfather in SC has a very long list of cars he's owned over the years. I'll list as many as I can remember:

1991 Jeep Grand Cherokee- put 89,000 mi on it in 2 yrs then sold it when the transfer case broke, the cost of repair would've been more than the car was worth

1993 Dodge Caravan Grand Sport
1996 Jeep Cherokee- got that from my aunt when he gave her his '01 Subaru Outback

1997 Dodge Dakota
1999 Plymouth Voyager
1999 Jeep Cherokee
2000 Daewoo Lanos- got that as a car for me; it became my daily driver for almost 2 months then we had to sell it because we moved back to Hellhole, USA :( (otherwise known as New Jersey) I miss this car. :(

2001 Subaru Outback- traded in the Voyager for this * tip, people over 6ft tall should not sit in the back for long periods of time*

2002 Chevorlet Silverado- possibly the best sound system that I've heard straight from the factory, traded in when some Chevy dealer ruined the engine

2003 Jeep Liberty Renegade- the result of trading in the Silverado and '99 Cherokee

2003 GMC Sonoma- originally supposed to be my first car w/ a 5 spd manual, but being stupid, I didn't make an effort to search for a school that taught how to drive manual transmission cars, that's how I got the Daewoo

2005 GMC Canyon Ext. Cab- the result of trading in the Jeep Liberty, the back is best suited for people w/out legs, otherwise it's a good truck
