How many cars on small tracks

I hope the PD will surprise me and we'll see:
- 24 or more on NASCAR races (some cars skins may be made by the PD)
- 20 to standard car races
- 16 or more for premiums
- more than 12 on short tracks
- I also hope that there will be rallycross and we will see 8 or more cars on this type of racing

Then I would be quite happy.
32 cars in race for GT6 or PS4 is a must for me.

I think you are hoping for too much. It's already been announced that 16 will be on track.

Obviously on circuits I would like to see as many cars as possible, but on tracks like that, it's all about bashing your way to the front in order to win the race within 3 laps which annoys me.

That's not a problem with too many cars. It's a problem with too few laps. A three lap session should count as qualifying, not as a race, especially now that a full grid of cars is up from 6 to 16 cars.

The absolute minimum number of laps for a race should be 15 laps on small tracks, 10 laps on medium tracks, 8 laps on large tracks, 5 laps at Le Mans (4 for the chicaned version), and 2 laps at Nurburgring.

This should offer enough time to start in 16th place, race cleanly, and overtake everyone while using a car that won't simply overpower the field.

You could shorten up the length of a race a little if the rolling start was changed up a bit. You could tighten the gap between each car, or allow all cars to begin accelerating when the polesitter begins, or cars could be placed in rows of two, making the race to turn 1 a lot more interesting, or you could use some combination of the three solutions to really bunch up the pack at the start. There's nothing worse than watching the field roll away in front of you while you are still waiting to begin accelerating, especially in a short race.

^We only need to have a qualification, then the number of laps will not play such a matter.

I honestly love the idea of having slightly too many cars on a track at once. I saw a vid with a 911 racing around Tsukuba with around 20 other cars. It looked difficult, but awesome fun at the same time. I always felt racing at the Nurb' ring was a bit lonely and felt like a time trail most of the time.

I was thinking the same thing about the ring Maxi but no matter how many cars there are once you make a good separation from the pack you still will have at least 20+ minutes of alone time. Other than the extremely slow drivers obviously.

Indeed on the ring it doesn't matter how many cars there are on track it will never be enough. But on Autumn Ring mini you could have framerate drops during the whole race if you are there with 16 cars in the rain for example. I don't mind it (large numbers of cars on small tracks) at all but I can see some difficulties for these situations.

You can't ever have too many cars on the track to start a race. You can only have too few laps to reasonably overtake everyone.

very thru. on small tracks with 2 laps, use the old gt standards imo. there will be plenty of tracks with larger grids for us. now if they give us more laps or custom racing then yeah more would be fun. more laps definitely on rolling starts. they are a pita to catch sometimes. but i expect gt5 to have a preset number of laps so should have the grid properly setup on a track by track basis.

There's no point in posting questions like this because the fine folks at PD refuse to give the fans any information. As you can see, this thread has resulted in complete guesses.

8 - 12 ? 16 is doable on every track

i believe the whole intent is for opinionated guesses. of coarse we can't control the cars on the track unless they give us grid customization.

For tracks like Indianapolis, would there be 43 cars on the grid? Or is that too much? Back O-T, probably 16 at most. Or even a custom amount.

from 16 to 20 cars.

Agreed. Especially if the rolling start system is similar to GT4 where you don't gain control or accelerate for several seconds after the lead car. Starting 16th at Autumn ring mini in this case would put you nearly a lap down at the start.

16 cars on small tracks could be manageable. If the rolling start system was improved (i.e. everyone accelerates when the leader crosses a certain point) or all 16 cars were arranged in standing start formation, races would be much easier to manage. Especially so with qualifying to determine grid position and/or more laps to a race.

While not the smallest of tracks it's intersting to read that the figure 8 of Top Gear test track is playable with 16 cars ... should make for a real Destruction Derby experience!

Think of all the punters online that will stop at Chicago.(that's where it crosses over with the cars going really fast after the follow-through)
