If it is properly maintained a farm tractor can last damn near forever.
They are the cockroach of the mechanical kingdom.

Would the thought of "Maybe he would like to know for purchasing reasons" happend to have crossed your mind....... just kidding.
It's for a friend. He would like to buy one so i thought i could see if you guys had anything to say about it.:)

How many hours to kill a tractor implies you're planning to destroy one, not to buy one.

Also, why do tractor videos on youtube have millions of views?

I dont know about the youtube stuff but i do know the title was intended to mean When you buy a 2nd hand tractor how amny hours until it is dead.

Or how many hours can you get out of a tractor until it is dead.

Put some silicone in the tank and you can guarantee it won't be forever. :D

What brand of tractor is it??

Your top brands are John Deere, International, Ford and Allis-Chalmers (made until mid 80's).

Basically, nothing runs like a Deere except for you when you see the price tag so expect to pay high prices for the top tractors as farmers know what they're worth and are usually willing to pay for it.

A well taken care of tractor will run forever. We had an old International with almost 70,000 hours before we sold it. You want to make sure theres no transmission damage/major repairs done (indicates something else might go next) and there is no major stress marks on on any of the metal. Other than that, just check over all the normal stuff you would when checking out a vehicle.

I'm not sure what he wants it for, but just a warning, they can be pretty dangerous. I have 15 years experience on them and I've almost killed myself numerous times. They're not toys and if you treat them as such, they can kill you as they can tip quite easily.

Let's see.

Around 1980 I paid about $600 for a running, complete John Deere Model 40 that was built some time in the early 1950s. It had a 19 or 20 thousand hours on the clock at that point.

I used it regularly with a 6 foot brush hog mower. I pulled untold hundreds of stumps with it. I drove it belly deep in the river to launch and retrive my boat most weekends in the summer. I plowed snow with it until I got frostbite. I'd say I put at least another 2-3000 hours on it.

I sold it around 1996 and got more than double what I paid for it. In that time I had replaced 1 tire and put gas and oil in it. Oh, and a battery.

Honestly, if I had a place to put it, I'd love to have it back, even though I moved to the 'burbs. Nothing's more fun than steering with the split wheel brakes because it's pulling so hard the front wheels are 2 feet off the ground.

You should see all maintenance records, and if the thing has been semi-well taken care of, it should not be a problem for many years.
