To keep it short, I cracked my laptop screen and want to take it somewhere to get a replacement. How much would a typical screen replacement cost at places like BestBuy?

If it helps to know, here's some info about the monitor (since I hear it can have an effect on costs) :

Asus K55N-DS81
Name : Generic PnP Monitor on AMD Radeon HD 7640G
Current Resolution : 1366x768 pixels
Work Resolution : 1366x728 pixels
State :Enabled, Primary
Monitor Width :1366
Monitor Height :768
Monitor BPP :32 bits per pixel
Monitor Frequency : 60 Hz

I've had a quick search for some screens but I haven't found any. Generally they cost around $50-100. If you've had any experience at building PC's they're fairly easy to fit.

Yeah, it's not a difficult DIY job, have a look on eBay and see if you can find a replacement before you take it to a shop to get fixed, then if the price they quote is much higher than buying your own replacement at least you'll have that option.

If you remove the LCD panel there will be a part number on the back.

Give this to an LCD supplier to get the cost for the same screen.

We have replaced screens on an Acer and a sony at work, the LCD is the cheaper thing.

Labor is what murders you.

Good thing my dad will be the one fixing it. :p
Which site?
"Laptopscreens"

First take your laptop apart(Before this, take the battery out and push the power button for 30 seconds to discharge anything in the laptop), get the model number of the screen(Also note the position of the video connector. Check to see if it's on the left or right side when looking directly at the back of it), then order your replacement from amazon or ebay, and then reassemble the laptop with the replacement. May seem long but they use many different screens in a laptop line and it's a huge hassle to buy a screen and then realize it does not fit. Some Chinese sellers are a real pain when you are trying to return the product(Many own warehouses in the USA too) A replacement screen may cost from $30 to $80.

I have no knowledge whatsoever about taking out laptop monitors though. Yes I've seen videos on YouTube and all of them are generally the same with laptopts that have 4 rubber pads that conceal screws to lift off the outer piece, but this laptop has only 2 very, very small and thin rubber pieces that hold no screws beneath them and the outer plastic piece feels too tight to be able to just be pulled off.

Well it just means that the two screws are replaced by plastic tabs. If you don't want to damage your plastics then get this tool(May want to get the 15 pair if you are like me and can rip the tools apart).

Ok bit of an update, since both me and my dad failed to open the outer plastic on the laptop, I gave up and decided to use an external monitor until I can pay for it to be repaired, since it's my fault after all. :dunce:

Wait a minute. Don't you have a one year warranty for damage? If I remember right you do if you did fill out the application when you bought it. If you do have it then you can send it off for repair.

I have 1 year warranty, yes. But I thought you needed a Protection Plan, or something, to cover broken screens?

The laptop comes with a 1 year accidental warranty plan. Which "Covers accidental drops, spills, power surges and fire damage for the first year." So if the cracked LCD was the result of a drop then it's a free repair!

That's excellent!
Except this isn't the result of a drop, it was stepped on while it was open. :(

Still, good to know for future accidents, should there be any :scared:.

Won't hurt to ask if the warranty covers it because that was just a short description. It may cover an accident like yours(Or may take pity on you and let you send it in).

So what you're saying is, you accidentally dropped your foot on it? Sounds like it's covered...!

Just tell them it was dropped and fell on something.

More than likely they'll fix it for you if you have an accident coverage on it.

I'll see what I can do, although I honestly do not mind using this monitor in the meantime. It's a bit lower resolution than my laptop screen (1280x720 rather than 1366x768) but who cares. 👍
