So what does one do?

You race in one room and all is fine, you race clean and fair, all goes well. Then when joining another room later, you start the race and everyone pulls out calling you a lagger and that you must be kicked.

How does this happen and How can it be avoided?
Is it a connection issue with that room?
What do you do?

Has this happened to anyone else, sorry, I am new to the online racing world?

I switched to a wired connection and all of my issues disappeared. WiFi is probably the root of most connection issues.

Also, don't download porn while on GT5 lol

When you know you're going to race online for serious, first go to OPTIONS menu > Network options > Clear System Cache > OK. Than turn off your console completely.

Than manually reset the power to the router (power off > 20 seconds wait for internal BIOS reset > power back on) and then turn on back the console.

All above under presumption you have NAT Type 2 enabled and that you' using *wired* connection. Wireless is really not an option. Also make sure that your PS3 connection is the only active connection on your router (that all other computers, WiFi devices, active porn downloads, etc) are disabled.

After that, it's all up to your upload speed. When you exchange the rooms, always go to OPTIONS menu > Network options > Clear System Cache > OK. Clearing a cache does wonders for stability of online racing.

As others have mentioned:

1) clear your cache.
2) If possible use a wired connection
3) If possible, circumvent your router and hard wire your PS3 directly into the modem (at least during online events).
4) Re-sync your modem before going online.

None of these are really the "last word" in establishing a lag free connection. But they help. And what also helps to is to have a 'strong' internet connection and good service provider. Your over all bandwidth and throughput, while important, matters much less than the ping speed and how fast those packets of data travel back and forth, although they do go hand in hand. But there are certain things you can't control. Namely, having a service provider with good DNS throughput and resolution. There are a lot of potential bottlenecks between your PS3, your router, and more importantly, the DNS pathway to the person at the other end. And there's no way to really know where those problems are. Some people have 'noisy' networks in their own home. But they think because they have a fast download connection that they shouldn't have any problems. In reality, it's not that simple.

It also depends entirely on the person at the other end. And there is no way, somebody in, say, Montreal and somebody in Melbourne will ever be able to have a ping speed of <25~30 ms. In my opinion, anything above 50ms is just unacceptable for the fast pace and lightning quick reactions of on-line racing. And in reality, that's not going to happen under the current internet framework. Whether you have a dedicated server or not, there are just some bottlenecks, distance being one of them, that we'll never overcome. The best we can do is hope to minimize is.

Lag might be out of your control. It might just be down to your connection to the others in a game. Usually people who are geographically closer will have less lag between them

If you are a long way from the exchange you are connected to its possible that might be causing lag.

If you cant resolve your lag just dont host games

It happens and all the things people said above may or may not work. And, if they do work, they're usually temporary fixes, or they don't fix the issue for all lobbies.

The only real solution is to leave the room and join another.

Look for rooms with 5 bars and 5 stars. Look for rooms with players from the same country as you.

Agreed. It's the inevitable that lag will happen now and then. Unless you have a poor connection running your ps3 on wifi along with something else shouldn't cause that much lag. I can run my ps3, laptop, phone, desktop, and an ipod all connected to my modem/router and have no lag in almost all my races or in other games....and I've not once cleared my cache.

Thanks so much for the replies guys, I take it that my son watching skateboarding on you tube while I race doesnt help then....sorry to the Germans in the Lupo Cup the other night.

Ok...so you guys recommend clearing Cache each time you visit a new room on the same night, yes?

Also, don't download porn while on GT5 lol

That's a deal breaker, don't expect me online anymore :)

I've been told as well that wired is the only option as the PS3's wireless is too slow even if my connection and router are up to the task.

I think, the online part of GT5 is badly programmed and instable. So people with low connection speed will always have problems.

And it is also bad, that you can´t really see, where the servers are located you try to connect to and that the region selection is limited to continents than specific countries.

Why does the region Europe and Australia are in one place? They have nothing to do with each other and are over 10000 miles aways from each other.

All online games have issues when people with poor connections are allowed to join games. But, the alternative would be to keep them from ever joining a game, which is not an option.

I have a stable connection (wired) and therefore I haven´t heared such comments.

But I don´t have the "clear system cache" in my PS-Menu (or is it ingame ??).
Maybe I´m to blind to see it.

That isn´t true. Other games can handle slower connections like DSL2000 a lot better than GT5 can.

Also, make sure your router is connected to the internet with all 4 lights on before you turn on your PS3! Otherwise you might get a failed NAT type, used to happen to me all the time, so I make sure the router is fully connected now.

Might be a good idea to run a few speed tests too, just to make sure your ISP isn't at fault, go to: www.speedtest.net on your PC & let us know the results.

And, to re-affirm what others have already said, use a wired connection if possible, it makes a huge difference.

👍

PS: Your upload speed is more important than your download speed regarding lag in GT5, mine's about 850kbps & I have no problems whatsoever in 3 or 4 star rooms.

GT5 net code is amazing (when it works) but is a lag/kick fest when it doesnt.

It all depends on the lag/speed/etc of the people in the room for it to all work. The more the worse it gets.

Ie not much you can do about it.

I'd say it's acceptable when it works, but never amazing. For amazing check some videos on youtube of some online races in iracing. There are a few too many odd movements and twitches in gt5 for it to look genuinely good.

Like I said, though, it's acceptable. I'd love it if they improved it a bit, but it doesn't stop me racing gt5 online.

I have a question on the NAT 1,2,3 thing it says I have a NAT 3 and I cant get into rooms .But I have excellent download speed and upload also .How can I change my NAT type?THank you for your response

Another good thing to do is ensure that you have a small/good sized friends list.
Having a friends list of 100 people is sure the slow down your internet connection by quite a bit.

Here you will find a good starting point.

I am on a wired connection, Ethernet cable.

I did a speed test, these were the figures.

PING: 420ms
Download speed: 0.28Mbps
Upload speed: 0.10Mbps
Latency: 57ms

I have no idea what these figures mean or even worse, I don't know what to compare them to.

Are these results good or bad....???

Those results are bad imo, especially the ping, no wonder you're having problems! I'd recommend getting a new ISP & a better package if you wanna race online in GT5. The ping vs latency numbers you provided don't make much sense to me though.

👍

Can anyone tell me if these results are good or bad because I'm not sure what these results mean:

Ping: 30ms
Download Speed: 2.90Mbps
Upload Speed: 0.95Mbps
