I just tried this using a Toyota Minolta 88C-V race car, and I noticed that my fuel usage was ridiculous; I had to pit stop every other lap. I thought nothing of it until I noticed some of my opponents were only pitting every 4th lap. They were in similar cars to me (Nissan R92CP, Sauber Mercedes C9 etc). It should go without saying, this makes winning basically impossible. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be using a different car?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe the AI pit crew punched a hole in yer tank before the race.
Cute.

Besides, it wasn't just the fuel. I used intermediate rain tyres at the start, and the rear ones were basically dead by the time I got to the pit. Of course, because its rear-wheel drive the front whells had taken hardly any damage.

Don't use intermedates. Don't use full wets. Stay on medium or soft racing tires. Pit every 2nd or 3rd lap, as fuel allows. Drive it like you stole it.

I do. Not that it helps when the AI has half as many pitstops.

But your choice of tires.

Stick to medium or soft racing tires. Grip levels in the wet don't seem to be 'on' in career mode.

Yeah. I understand this. What I was trying to say is, it doesn't matter anyway, because the fuel only lasts for about 2.5 laps before running out.

However, I think the time gained in the laps due to slicks, will negate the extra pitstops.

The car you use matters greatly, using the rocket you can do 6 laps, meaning you pit once with 1 lap to go. I'm sure there are some LMP cars with better mileage, i tried the toyota 7 and it had awful mileage too, maybe because they are older or something.

Could be the case. I used a Sauber C9 and had to pit every other lap. It worked out that I pit on the last lap, as time ran out, and took the lead back for good before Indianapolis.

I guess it makes sense that different cars have different fuel consumption (it seems so obvious when you put it like this :p). I guess the Audi R18 would be the logical choice, though i'm not sure its fast enough to compete with the sauber.

What really annoys me though is that the AI can go much further than the player in the same car before pitting.
