Hi,
Last night I got a weird text message on my cell phone and I'm trying to find out who sent it.
I have the number that sent the text, I just don't recognize it.
Can anyone show me a way to find out who owns that number?
Thanks for the help... Everything I've found on the net only takes the number and offers me a deal (join their site, find out the info for $______).

I'm not ready to pay for the info so I'm hoping someone here can help!

I don't think you will be able to find out who owns the number apart from calling them up. Over here, they require those who purchase new SIM cards to register their personal details with their respective service providers. This procedure was enforced probably about a year or two ago after certain cases where people purchased new SIM cards just to send out bomb threats, pranks, etc.

If I receive a message from an unfamiliar number I just borrow my friends phone and call up the number and ask for some random person.

Me : Hello, can I speak to John please?
X : Uhm.. wrong number.
Me : Oh I'm sorry, may I know who's on the line?
X : ________

:D

You might try www.anywho.com with the reverse lookup. This will give the name of the phone number but it's not very usefull ig the number was a cell phone. Alot of times when you get them text messages they want you to call it, then you can get charged for the call that sometimes charges a lot of money. The best thing to do is to just delete it.

If it's a premium rate number, leave it alone. There's a few scams out there where they phone you and allow it to ring a few times then wait for you to phone the missed number back. Some are just a simple premium number, some are extremely high fixed rate and some can continue charging you even after you hang up :irked:

Are premium numbers here in the US are pretty easy to spot. You guys seem to have all kinds of phone problems in the UK, geez.

Kent, there isn't much you can do with a Cell phone that I know of, except find out its area. Melissa Data is a tool I use when I need to get some info on stuff, but its never had much info for cell phone numbers.

Right on... So far nothing much is coming up. :ouch:
I can say for sure it is a normal number from my area (same area code, no odd 1-800-XXX-XXXX or anything of that sort).

Thanks for the help so far, maybe I will find something.
Maybe tonight I will just have one of my friends call the number. :sly:

Thanks again for the help everyone!

I don't know. I've never understood that. I've always wondered if adding 141 to the number you're texting would do it, but I never got around to trying it.

If you are afraid it might be scam, download skype and use your first free call for it.

Go to Google and in the search bar type the following(x=number)

phone number xxx-xxx-xxxx

might work

I did that for my cell phone number and got the City and State of my grandma's address. The reason i didn't get mine is because my number is branched off of my grandma's plan. To get the full name you have to pay like $40. But hey, catching criminals is worth the money.

But with the info you get from the search, you can Google search and get the name of the person. Google is like duct tape.

Was a good message, that entertained thoughts of filthy behavior?

If not, bah, just delete it and get the next round.

WHo knows, she may have been drunk texting and hit the wrong key.

I've found out what the story was and I'm sure it was a mistake (probably druken since it was 3:41am when I got the message).
Thanks for all the advice!
I appreciate everything mentioned. cheers:
