How to make GT6 more enjoyable with a DS3?

I'm poor. You're poor too. I have a relatively small, quaint house. You probably do, too. We have one thing in common: we can't afford a wheel. All you and I have to use is a DualShock 3. Gran Turismo 6 has become a bit boring to me now (I haven't flamboyantly dissed the game, however). You probably have a DS3 as well, if you're not a wheel user. Here's the problem:

How can we make Gran Turismo 6 more enjoyable with a DualShock 3 controller?
Sure, there might be options to tweak it to optimal performance, but how can we make the most of our simple controllers? Add-ons? Settings? Or is there no real hope for us humble controller users?

Too many reviews are complaining about people getting bored of Gran Turismo 6 really fast, and without a wheel, GT6 is a dead end.

I run all cars the same. No aids, just ABS on 1. Use the default button mapping as well. I leave controller sensitivity at 0. I honestly don't do anything else. I will have not discovered anything else to help with driving.

Not aids abs 1 only for me too, default sensitivity. I don't use the default mapping though. I have the really common brake/gas to l2 - r2, and a more strange X for gear down and O for gear up(i have them on the right stick too, sometimes it's more comfortable), square for handbrake.
I'm not good at tuning, i usually just make the cars lower, nothing else, sport hard tyres usually.

One thing that i do is...i use the left stick like a wheel. I mean, i don't ''hit'' it, i always keep my finger there and i turn it really smoothly, sometimes pushing it forward too...it helps to be more precise keeping the line etc(when i do a turn, i do only one single movement and keep it until i'm out of it, working on gas and brakes too, of course), at least it helps me to stay with wheels players.
I don't know other ''tricks'', switching to the triggers was my biggest upgrade when gt5 came out.

No aids at all, unless the real car has ABS then that goes on 1. I also use the sticks for throttle/brake and steering (cant stand the triggers), R1/L1 for gears and run 7 sensitivity. I could use a wheel, but the FFB is terrible so I just stick with the DS3 - doubt I'm any slower with it.

No aids except abs..if you want to make it interesting go drive the shelby gt350 with a super charger and turn off abs,quite the challenge

Get a faster/twitchier car!

Be smooth. I know plenty of guys who are world-class fast with the pad so it CAN be done... just don't smash the thumbstick around.

Map L2 and R2 to turn your head left/turn right. It's almost like real life now! Rather pointless feature that can be fun on certain tracks to looks around or peek a bit around while entering something like Carousel.

Use DS2 stick from PS2 and USB adapter, I used an old worn out DS2 ( about 7 years old now ), and I can drive without any aids - no ABS included and high brake balance, check my no ABS videos on my sig :) I did 2013 GT Academy with the same setup. The main difference is the face buttons have better range and response, it takes 3 time more pressure to register full 100% input, this allows very precise braking and gas with square and cross -10% to 100%.

We have one thing in common: we can't afford a wheel. .

Buy a wheel...

Map gas/brake to shoulder buttons. Up/down shift to either analog or face buttons.

Believe it or not GT5 was worse.
Thanks to the suspension modeling its a lot easier to see how your handling is. Gives you a muuuuch better idea of the grip you have and what you can get away with.

Been using the controller since GT1, haven't experienced boredom since.
Yes, it's much more realistic with a wheel, but you still can have tons of fun with the DS3 :)

It took a couple of days for me to get the feel with GT6.
Its not like GT5 where you can just jump in and be fast straight away, it takes time to master it and believe me, when you do, it is light years ahead of GT5.
The physics/handling are a thing of beauty! (with aids off)

L2 = Brake
R2 = Acceleration
X = Gear up
Square = Gear down
0 = Handbrake

I always liked gt5 with a controller more than with a G27. With GT6, the G27 wins (finally). But i think your best bet, OP, is to appreciate what you've already got, and that'll be the best trick in the book.
In gt5, on DS3, i mostly appreciated the vibration-it felt more subtle and detailed than the FFB on the G27. Also, i enjoyed how the analog stick made the cars feel more alive and gave me the ability to shift from lock to lock instantly.
So change your perspective thats your best bet out of boredom. Wheel offers precision, DS3 offers fun. G27 on GT5 was downright boring after a few months

Sell the DS3 and buy a DFGT for only twice that price.

I don't have much space to fit a wheel...

1 Reduce Rear toe (about oversteer)
2 -1 sensitivity
3 aids off only abs
4 learn to tune, ajust your cars...

I tune a LFA for ds3, now im happy :D

My setup I've had ever since GT5 came out. Though I did change things a bit because of nitro and you can change to R gear now.

L2: Brake
L1: (window) wipers
R2: Accerlation/Reverse (change gear to R for reversing)
R1: Headlight toggle/flash
X: Rear view
O: Handbrake
[]: Horn
/\: Nitro
Left stick: Steering
R3: Change view
Right stick up: Gear up
Right stick down: Gear down
Right stick left/right: Left/Right view
Select: Open RA menu
Pad: Adjust RA

You can have for example horn or headlight on L3.

Also, to get smooth(er) cornering with DS3, on par with a wheel. Though much easier and more precise with a wheel;

Push the left stick up/towards the edge all the time when cornering and don't shortcut by moving it through the middle. One of my old (sixsax) controllers has a completely loose left stick :b And there is wear marks on the stem :D

E2: Add to above. Like you have been told before on Gran Turismo; NO SUDDEN MOVES! Be gentle.

E: I will buy a wheel. G27 please.

SO, I haven't found a thread about this exactly, however didn't know that it needed ti own thread...

How does chaning the Controller Sensitivity affect driving... What is the range in GT6, and how can it help when driving things like the FGT/X2011/LMP cars? I always found these to be twitchy, and I am very smooth left thumb stick driver.

Will try this L2/R2 setup... I can see that this might allow braking without full throttle off.

Cheers all.

I use the right analogue stick for acceleration/ brake. L2 change down, R2 change up, (little triggers fitted)

I am still crap, mind.

Find a car you like - Nice engine note.

I would say the LLC Rocket - all Mechanical grip and low power low mass. Build up your pace in it. Do the basics... brake in a straight line, then turn in for the corner. On the exit loosen out of the turn before you put down the power.

Walk then run. Get the feel for the car and how your inputs can make a corner easy or hard. Slow in Fast out.

When you get to grips, you can do the hard step. Turn off the ABS and Traction Control.

I run No driver aids, And use the basic DS3 controls. It isn't as fast as the fast guys, but when you are *just* in control of a car and you manage to hold a corner you will know that it was ALL YOUR SKILL.

Every tough corner is an apex to clip. Every Brake zone is a conflict between locking up the tyres or not braking hard enough.

Every car I have to alter the basics, No Traction Control, No ABS - And on the first car I switch controller sensitivity up to 7.

It is all personal preference.
Running no ABS makes the brakes very prone to locking up. You can balance this out in the suspension area of a car, 3/2 for Sports tyres - 6/4 for Racing Hards.

Pick a track you enjoy too. Get good at it. Try to get consistent.

No TCS and ABS means you will have to be subtle and smooth with the sticks. But like juggling Dynamite it is explosive fun.

Good luck and drive it like it is a hire car.

I do not understand the point of this thread. Why is the controller boring? Is it too easy or too had or what?
Yeah, what's his problem? Can't get a top 10 time trial result and blames the DS3? It's all I use, and not too worried about 10 secs behind best wheel drivers.

I found trying to use the default button config didnt work for Me because I found it impossible to keep steady part throttle input on winding turns with the X button. So I changed to the triggers and got some of those snap on triggers that make L2/R2 look like 360 triggers. Makes less travelfor full throttle

I'm having problems with braking my front tires lock up tried ABS 1 and now trying ABS 5 it's much better I still problems stopping does anyone have any suggestions? I had problems stopping in GT 5 also

I've found that throttle and brake modulation are the primary disadvantages of the ds3. I typically tune my cars to understeer slightly under acceleration, and I use lower brake power to keep things under control. Sometimes I'll even turn on traction control just a bit (I know. Sacrilege.). I could leave all aids off in gt1-5, but I got frustrated without them in gt6. Some people like a car to really challenge them, but I mostly play GT to relax. having forgiving settings makes the game less frustrating with a ds3 IMO.
