hi there guys, ive searched the forums and ive been unable to find the relevant thread...:grumpy:

basically ive brought a new sony laptop a few weeks ago, and ive been busy with exams so i haven't had the chance to sort it out, but now that their over i can finally sort things out!

so as the title says 'How To Partition A Hard Drive In Win7'...
im really a novice at these sort of things and I don't want to lose any of the data that on the laptop, and ive done some research into it, and ive found in a few youtube videos saying that you have to click on 'Shrink Volume' on the relevant partition in the disk management section...but im not sure if this IS the right thing to do.

can you please advise me in what i have to do! Thanks!!
BTW heres a picture of what comes up in the Disk Management screen if it helps!!!!

I want to leave around 100/150gb on C and the rest i want to partition into two other drives...

Thanks in advanced!

As far as I no if you partition a hard drive it's going to whip all the stuff off first than do it. There is probably a program you can get or buy that can partition without whipping off data I no for Mac there iPartition, but I'm not sure for windows. No matter what I would suggest backing up anything important before trying anything just to be safe

I personally just use a Ubuntu Live CD(100% free) and re-size it with the included software on the CD. Very easy to use and you just slide the bars around to make C smaller and make two partitions out of the free space. Easy and plenty of tutorials out there.

oo....!

i asked someone and they said you have to make a logical drive so that you dont wipe the data off or something along those lines... :s

You'll have to read the fine print but I think EASEUS Partition Master leaves your data intact. Double check that to be sure as it's been a while since I used it and it was on a brand new drive so it didn't matter.

Right click the C: partition and select shrink, then shrink by XX amount of MB

BUT DO NOT TOUCH SYSTEM RESERVE OR RECOVERY.

And when ever you are doing anything with hard drives partitioning, back up first

a...ill look into that Ubuntu Live CD!

EDIT - isnt this a OS??!

Yes it is but it has the the GParted software included(makes it easier just to load the CD into the RAM). You can find it in the administrator tab.

Grayfox has got it 👍

G-Parted is great and it has a feature that will migrate the data and let you resize the partition. This process can take a few hours or more depending on the amount of used space, fyi. I use this program all the time at work and boot off a usb drive so the program loads faster, but CD should work fine and is easier to do. Just be sure to get the latest version to ensure full compatibility with your new computer (sometimes G-Parted won't recognize brand new graphics devices for some odd reason).

thanks for the tip...but what does migrate the data mean?! does that mean that it store the data elsewhere while the partitioning is taking place and one the partitioning has been done it will 'put back' the data??

Data is usually fragmented throughout a partition, Win 7's built in disc partitioner won't deal with it. Migrating means moving the data up or down the partition before resizing it.

Easeus partition manager will do this as well.

right i no its been a while but ive finally got round to sorting this thing out!! LOL

so ive load the EaseUS Partition Magic 9.0 on my laptop done all the re-arranging and ive also installed that 'Todo Backup' and created a full backup of my laptop (35.7GB is the size of the backup) as it backed up everything, C drive, System Reserved and Recovery...

and now that ive done all that i just want to make sure that ive followed all the right steps!

this is where i am now and just need to click 'apply'

But before that i do that i just want to make sure that it all good...so if can you please just have a look at the image and tell me if something dont look right!

Thanks! 👍

sweet! thanks...ill give it a go in a wee bit!

did take a while but worked a treat!

thanks to all those that helped...and for anyone else wondering how use
EaseUS Partition Magic...easy, effective and free!👍

admins you can now lock this thread if you wish =D
