Well, there's another embargo blown. HUMMERForums dropped all the images they had of the HUMMER HX concept that was due to be officially unveiled in a scant five days, and Jalopnik followed suit. So here it is, HUMMER's Wrangler-competitor in concept form, complete with a 3.6-liter SIDI E85 FlexFuel engine which sends power to all four wheels via a six-speed auto 'box. The HX is technically a convertible, meaning that the roof panels and modular rear can open or be stowed, while the interior instruments can be reconfigured depending on the type of driving you'll be doing. All the details are available in the press release after the jump.

Read the full deets here, including the press release.

But, the important stuff:

HUMMER
HX CONCEPT PROVIDES VISION OF A RUGGED, OPEN-AIR HUMMER

* Youthful, open-air entry-level-size HUMMER
* Designed by a trio of young designers
* Convertible body with removable roof panels and modular rear roof assembly
* Easily removable fender flares and doors
* Full-time 4WD with front and rear locking differentials
* Aeronautically inspired interior with functional, lightweight design elements
* Reconfigurable instruments for highway and off-road driving
* 3.6L SIDI V-6 E85 FlexFuel engine (304 BHP) with six-speed automatic transmission

Dare I say that I like it? If they can make it efficent (with a diesel, please) and cheap, I see no reason why these can't sell in proper numbers...

The idea is freaking awesome. I love this. But it needs the mechanicals of the H1 to be fully badass.

Wrangler competitor? I'll believe it as soon as I see a sub-$20k price tag on it.

It could be cool but it's a HUMMER.👎

And that doesn't look nearly production-ready.

I like it far better than I like the Wrangler 2 door. But, at the same time, I also liked the FJ Cruiser similarly, so I'll wait and see. The H3 sucked in a hilarious way, so this may go the same route.

They do have that fancy new 5.3L V8 under the hood of the H3, at the very least that makes sense...

As long as they offer some kind of "cheap" V6 version, a "loaded" V6 version, and have a "green/tough" diesel option, I'll be very happy. Furthermore, if they can keep prices between $25-37K (like the Wrangler), a lot of kids would be happy.

I think a V8 would be a little excessive in that thing. I would expect one or two 4 cylinder options and a V6.

But who knows how crazy GM will get.

My guess is that they'll all be six-pots across the board. I think both of the turbocharged 2.0L I4 models (those being the DIG models from the Solstice/HHR Turbo) and the Saab-designed model (now good for 300 BHP) would both be too expensive and possibly too fragile for the presumably HD-needs that they would have.

They don't have a cheap 4 that could do business in the very base model? You would think that with HUMMERs being known for fuel consumption, they might try to make it as easy on gas as possible?

I don't think Hummer will pose a threat to Jeep. The price tag of Hummer's lately is still a nice chunk over Jeep.

As A Mopar guy, I kind of resent it for being a Jeep Knockoff, But I suppose it is okay for what it is. At least a vehicle like this would see off road a bit more than it's stablemates, but they have to make it dirt durable and the suspension ridiculously easy to modify if they're going to take a bite out of Wrangler sales. If the truck's the same price, but the H4's lift kit is twice/three times as much, I'm walking over to the Jeep dealership.

K.I.S.S. Keep. It. Simple. Stupid.

Oh, yeah...Visibility is important Offroad. Bigger windows, please.

They will make this I just don't know how close it'll look to this concept, but my dad works at a Linamar plant (they produce vehicles parts for GM and other american car companies) and he told me last year that the plant he works at got the contract from GM to build the connecting rods for a Hummer called the H4.

This one has been in the works for a long, long time. I don't know the specifics of the vehicle overall, particularly the chassis it is rolling on, but I'm sure TopHat or I will have plenty of deets once they blow up on GMI...

Darn it... I was going to say the exact same thing about the windows.

I can't see myself off-roading in a vehicle where you can't really see the corners... let alone one with a hoodline high enough to hide even the tallest spotter I could take along with me on the trail... even if he stood on top of a stepladder...

Of course, the tiny windows ought to make it ridiculously easy to armor-plate...

I have to admit, this is pretty cool looking. If it goes offroad better than the Jeep GM might have something here.

Now this is one kickass looking Hummer.

I had some other thoughts about the truck.

1: This vehicle, to truly make it's target, will have to have a unique platform. I can't think of one G.M. truck that would have a wheelbase short enough to compete with the Wrangler.
2: I know, this comment's probably going to be unpopular, but to keep costs, performance, and modifiability in line with the target, G.M.'s gonna have to go straight-axled on this one, at least in back. If they do go independent, they'll have to make it a simple one, with parts that can be easily exchanged for extra ride height. Which brings the concern...
3: Ride. I could see HUMMER marketing this at a more upscale audience than the Wrangler. However, any Jeep CJ/YJ/TJ owner will tell you: Short wheelbase + offroad-biased suspension = kidney buster. the YJ coil-sprung Wranglers are the best (havent' heard much about the new JK from owners, but it should be evn better,) but while riding up to Oshkosh on washboard concrete roads in my grandpa's YJ, I can tell you that the ride's still not good. GM has their work cut out for them, especially if it's aimed at a more upscale audience.

I'd comment about the 4.0 Power-tech, but it's gone from the Chrysler lineup. so the G.M. V6 should be about the same durability-wise as the current Jeep V6. Furthermore, I'd have to see a more realistic version than this showpiece. I wonder, could someone 'Shop some steelies and tone down the bling a bit on this truck?

this looks cool, but when production time comes I'm sure they will tune it down it will not look good, I really hope they don't change it when hit production

The only option I know of would be a shortened version of the current GMT355 chassis in use under it. That, or its a HEAVILY MODIFIED Theta structure...

Given what a HUMMER needs to be able to do, I think it will have the straight axles in the back at the very least. As for the front, thats a bit tricky. Jeep switched, which means GM would likely follow suit.

Pretty much, but that mostly depends on how they price it. The H3 isn't "cheap" by any means, but compared to the other Jeeps in that segment, I'd say its on par in terms of performance and the like. Particularly now that they shoved a proper V8 in there...
