Hybrid (not sharked, but real fuel hybrids) cars anyone?

...can you equip a CVT to any car in this game like in GT2? (thats what it sounded like what you were saying, RogsR34UK)

Love them or loathe them, Hybrids are the future (oh no, he's been brainwashed by all those ads in the Guardian Weekend magazine!)

I'll start that again...

Love them or loathe them, you better get used to them because the 'fuel economy' theme is something that we will see alot more of in the GT series in the future...

I can't say anything about GT4 (since I live in the UK :() but in Prologue, one of the trickiest license tests to gold (and hence to obtain a prize car) was getting a Prius around Tsukuba under a certain time, but only using a set amount of fuel, meaning much more thought had to go into throttle control...

You had to learn what parts of the circuit you could do without using the gas at all, you essentially glide round for the most part... yes, it's a bit slow and a bit dull, but I commend KY and PD for including these cars and (dare I say) concepts into the game. .. it's another indication of just how much thought has gone into GT4 to make it a cut above the rest.

TM

P.S. The Dualnote is gorgeous and worthy of any garage...

P.P.S. Maybe a Prius (or other Hybrid) Enduro is not such a bad idea... but with the emphasis on seeing how far you can go on a certain amount of gas, as opposed to a straight time/distance-based race?

Once they figure out the technology, maybe. Hybrids are slightly more fuel-efficient than normal gas-engined cars, but only slightly. It would take years (and years.... and years) to save enough on fuel to cover the extra cost of the vehicle. And then, when you finally did that... you'd have to pay a few grand to replace the battery (which only lasts a few years).

The technology just isn't there yet. Right now, the cars are too expensive, and just not good enough to warrant the extra cost. If you're on the fuel-economy bug, buy a diesel. You'll save thousands of dollars up front, and end up getting better gas mileage than a hybrid.

As I said, they're pointless.

Hybrids are not the future, if theres no more oil, Hybrids are useless.
Fuelcell is the future.

True....

Also True.

If they can figure out an inexpensive why to get hydrogen, that would pretty much solve the challenge. As far as what I've heard anyway.

may be if the oil price goes double the current price AND there's no Hydrogen fuel cell ready yet... then Hybrids will be worthwhile.....

rite now.... i think it's cool for normal everyday driving....and is rich enough to get one... (i think Prius looks cute... :P )

Why I don't get is why they have the torque numbers wrong on the car... they are only listing the gas engine information. The Prius electric motor generates around 300 ft-lbs of torque at 0 (zero) RPM.

And towards Jedi... the reason CVT is not used in motorsport is because it is banned. Someone mentioed some open wheel race cars where using it till it was banned. CVT's can also be setup to "shift" at the driver's command, and all sort of things, since they can be told to do whatever the hell you want... say a 30 gear shift based tranny.

And the Prius has crap for handling stock due to the Eco tires on it that have a low level of friction for better milage.

Have you ever seen a performace electric car? In action? I have... its not funny... 0-60mph in under 4 seconds, 1000 ft-lbs of torque. Electric motors in no way can hurt the performance of a car... look at the Accord Hybrid. General public opinion of hybrids and electric motors is just ignorant...

I wasn't talking about hybrids in general when I was talking about handling and performance, I was talking about the Prius. The only generalization I made about hybrids was the fact that they're more expensive and have lower mileage than a diesel. Which has very little bearing on their handling.

The handling wasn't addressed at you, just the CVT comment.

I shoulda organized my post more clearly. I just remember someone saying the Prius handled like a joke, and I'm saying it has alot to do with the OE tires.

Which is true.. the mentioned that on Top Gear during the Comedy Handling Awards, about the tires. Which actually makes me want to drive it even more.. try out the "comedy handling" on the 'Ring or something. :)

it's kinda hard to compare hybrids with diesels since i can't think of any cars that offer both hybrid and diesel....
the only cars that i can think of that can beat Prius fuel efficiency is the Insight and smart fortwo in Canada (with its 41hp diesel and 135km/h top speed.... i think it's only for canada but i could be wrong...)
have to wait til' the american trucks to come up with the hybrids then may be we can compare diesel with hybrid....

ps: north american diesel are dirty unlike european clean diesel.... so i think diesel in north america is more polluting...

...so can you interchange the CVT transmission with other cars in the game like i heard you could in GT2?

In response to CVTs not being able to handle high amounts of torque, I suggest you read up on Fendt tractors. http://www.fendt.com They produce 310 Hp and gobs and gobs of torque and put it all through a CVT. However, the transmissions are have to be so heavy to be able to do it that they would not be practical for racing.

Woodstock: I was referring to European diesels... 60-70mpg+, far better than a Prius.

It does fall into the same category of fuel-efficient gasoline cars, though... "high mileage" and "performance" just don't go together. Any car touted as being ultra-fuel-efficient is also bound to be rather boring. Which is why you never hear about them.

I own a 2001 Honda Insight CVT, and you bet your ass I'll get one (or twenty) in GT4. I'll let you know how realistic it is. though i have to wait for the US release :/

About hybrids being pointless-

Hybrids charge their batteries using the energy that is created from braking. (right?) In other cars, this energy is just wasted as heat. The concept of capturing that energy, instead of wasting it, is good, and can be applied to any car. The technology may be expensive now, but when it gets cheaper, there is really no reason not to use it on just about any car that is concerned about fuel efficiency. You could have diesel hybrids, hydrogen hybrids, any combination of a) primary energy source, and b) electric battery powered by the brakes. Until we have a source of energy that is so abundant that we can afford to waste energy, hybrids should be around.

The new Ford 500 sedan uses a CVT with it's horrible excuse for an engine, the 3.0 Duratec with 200 hp. They use the CVT so that the porker doesnt feel like it has 200hp:p

I drove the Insight last night and it appeared to have a conventional transmission.

I also drove the Prius (new model) last night. It would be interesting to drive the 'Ring flat out with the Prius and the diesel BMW 120d to see which was the more economical (I wonder if the size of the tank on the real car has been taken into account).

the Insight does come with a 5 speed as well. the CVT actually came later and is an option.
the 5speed is faster and gets better mileage than the CVT in real life too. (i dont think honda setup the CVT for speed :p)
