I am looking for a cockpit... help?

Hey guys,

Today I got offered a free Recaro adjustable bucket seat from my uncle.
Height adjustable and so on... and so on. My uncle has a bad back and unequal feet and is very tall, hence the need for a special seat which was far more adjustable then the standard seat in a Volkswagen Transport T4. Anyway, he saw my gear here and told me he doesn't need the chair anymore. So hence he asked if I wanted it cause he was of the opinion that such gear (T500, TH8, CSP's and future CSW) needs a proper rig and seat.

Now I need to buy a cockpit for it, or make one myself. Preferably one that can be easily stored (foldable) since I have to put it all in my tiny bedroom.

In the past I looked at a Apiga AP2+ which is foldable and I can put wheels under the chair as well, so I can use it as a desk chair.

If you guys have any other idea?
Preferably as cheap as possible...
Is the rSeat available without a seat maybe?

ps. I don't have any welding skills nor do I know anyone that has them. Well maybe my uncle if he's willing.
 
You can't fold it but you can buy GamePOD frames. I have a GT2, GT2 EVO and a RS EVO. I can highly recomend them, really well built and really strong. Pre drilled for most wheels and lifetime warranty. Any questions I'll be happy to answer.

Currently on an old knittingmachine table with the table clamp of the T500. Of course on the rig it'll be hard mounted.


@FCTaff: I also looked at the GamePOD's in the past. Might have a look there as well. It'll all be in the new year and there is no rush here. Although I'd like to have everything done by the time I have to do my wheel review of course, as that wheel deserves it.
 
I visited the APIGA showroom here in HK and was very impressed, both models (AP1/AP2) has seats (with AP2 Plus seat extension) which use standard race car rails, I have my own bucket seat mounted on my early model AP1 as well. Quality is good and it also has hardmount points for just about anything (Fanatec wheel, G25/27, Clubsport pedals), you can also custom mount G25 pedals on them too.
 
Couldn't you put the seat on a wooden baseplate and buy a Wheelstand Pro? The seat would be movable and so'd be the WSP. :)
 
right now i have a two piece cockpit i built myself that includes a small cabinet that holds the wheel, reverse mounted pedals and the shifter of my g27 as well as the center speaker and my 5.1 digital converter for the surround sound . the racing seat i got off ebay is mounted to a wooden base and i can separate and move the seat out of the way when necessary. the cabinet dimensions are about 3ft long, 2.5ft high, and about 2.5ft wide. it very easily hides under a desk and actually looks like a decently nice piece of furniture both the seat and cabinet can serve other functions. i modified an existing design by rpod on this site to be able to work for me. good luck. i only spent about $60 in materials after i spent too much on the wheel, seat, and speakers

I already mailed Jonathan Chan from Apiga in the past and I can order everything seperate from him directly. I wonder if he already has that TH8 RS shifter mount ready, he said he was working on it then. hmmm...

I am still not 100% sure if it's the right thing for me. I like it foldable but on the other side I wish the shifter was closer to the floor rather then to the side of the wheel about halfway down. You know, like in a normal car... that height.

I wouldn't even consider a one legged stand. The only leg between my legs will be my own and nothing else. ;)
To be honest, like many here complain about... it sucks with braking having something in between your legs.
The current table I am using gives me my leg room, so I'd stick with that in that case. Also I would buy some MDF then and screw it onto the foot of my current desk chair instead.

This is not what I want however. Two legs, preferably foldable (or easy to take apart, so to put it away in parts) with chair seperation and sturdy. And maybe some wheels that can be taken off or something.
Though, with those demands I'll probably have to design it myself. :nervous:

Sounds like a nice piece of furniture. Unfortunately I don't use a desk for my computers and stuff, also the desk I have doesn't have anything more then just leg room, but is on the other side of the room. lol
So a cabinet design won't do for me, although it is indeed nice.

I was thinking of making a hard wooden (like oak or something) frame that you could fold up though, but I am afraid about the flexing of wood during races especially with just a bare frame structure.



Oh, have you guys ever hooked up the electronics of a Recaro chair to the AC coming out of your wall? (We have 230V here)
If so... can you give me some tips on how what to use for conversion from 230 to 12? I don't care if I need to grab the soldering iron.

Try to contact the folks at Rseatusa (oops, just saw on your 230V comment that your aren't in the US, so use the country specific one for you) via their message function on the website. Dimitrie is very fast in response. Maybe they have a chance to sell you the frame without the seat. In the meantime check your uncles seat and verify were the mounting holes are. The supplied Rseat has on each side one hole in the front and one in the back. I think the pattern is industry standard. But still make sure that you don't suddenly end up with a mounting issue.
 
I will contact rSeat after I get the chair here so I know if they are mounted on the side like a fixed bucketseat (as used on the rSeat) or like a regular seat with with bottom mount and slides.

Thanks for the video. I didn't have much time last night to search youtube due to a birthday today and having to be up early for visitors and so on. It definitely gives me a few ideas, but I will have to adjust it more and make it a lot more sturdy. After all the T500 and CSW will be far more powerful then a mere DFGT. ;)

I also figured out how to power the chair. Use an adapter for the lightnet to a 12v plug. Or a transformer. Or what is probably the most powerful solution, using the 12v rail on a regular PC powersupply.
I'll wait until purchase of anything till I have figured out how much amps it pulls exactly.
 
Oh, now I got you. I re-read your first post . You are talking about an adjustable Recaro seat. Sorry, I've never seen adjustable and bucket seat been used together. I only heard them referred as sport seats. So yeah, seeing that it is adjustable and also powered, then yes, it will have bottom mounting points and you will need rails and possible sliders.
 
I figured as much. Well my uncle called it a bucket seat but said it was adjustable. So I reckon he meant a tightly hugging sports Recaro seat.
I reckon the rails and sliders are with the seat already.

Hey good for you Logi, looks like a decent seat. I would imagine you are looking for a economical rig? How much can you spend?

I'd reckon about a 500 ish would be reasonable. It's more like a how much do I have to save up then how much am I able to spend. ;)

That Rino Seat looks nice, but is it easy to take apart regularly?

Again, since I will have to put my desk chair into the trash because I need room for the other seat in the small bedroom to fit anything at all, I want to somehow be able to use the Recaro as a normal seat as well.


Oh and I was thinking of using this in my computer to power that chair. Of course I'd have to make sure my powersupply will be able to provide enough power on the 12v line.

With maximum dimensions of 120x160cm due to space issues.

I want to either put it on lockable 8 wheels and make the chair detachable or use a fixed rig and make the chair detachable from it putting it on a rig with wheels for when I want to use it as a normal chair for sitting behind the computer.

I still need to figure out how to do this exactly in my head, but any thoughts are welcome of course.

Yes. Now please for the following test enter the girls changing room at your local swimming pool and wait there for an hour while carefully observing each individual. If you come out without anyone having assaulted you the test is successful. Which means the invisible man project is a grand success.
