I am so sick of the reputation thing

Btw, is there a way for me to know how many rep points I have?
As said earlier in this thread:
Nooe, users used to be able to see their rep but that lead to trouble and abuse of the rep system so Jordan rightfully took that ability away.
And here:
Jordan
Viewing these statistics encourages people to turn the system into what it's not designed to be here - a ranking, rather than recognition system. A defined goal and "progress report" of attainment to that goal also encourages "logrolling" and other unsavory behavior.
It's a long thread, but it may answer some questions about the GTP reputation system. As of about a year ago, you can't view how many rep points you have.

Also, the FAQ has a section devoted to it:

FAQ
What does the "Quality Posts" label mean?

Users with the "Quality Posts" denotation have been labeled as such by the GTPlanet community. These users have more than 300 "reputation" points.

Reputation points are given by clicking on the red check mark next to the "Post #" of any given post. A "Good" rating for a post gives the user 10 reputation points, and a "Bad" rating for a post subtracts 10. You must have at least 100 posts to rate others, and you must rate at least 10 other user's posts before you can rate the same person again. You are also limited to 10 votes, or ratings, per day.

This system is designed to only reward the highest quality posters with the badge. Any abuse of the system could result in individual banishment or removal of the reputation system entirely.

In passing, I'll say this: It took a while for non-mods to get the Quality Posts badge (with the exception of Famine and Small_Fryz), but and then different members seemed to get the badge about once or twice a week. One two members "log-rolled" their way to a badge (since removed, I think), and the ability to view your current "points" was duly removed, since people could tell others how many they had (or hadn't).

Once the ability to view rep points was taken away, people got the badge a little less often. Whether this was the actual reason or not is hard to tell. There seems to be a resurgence as many longtime and good-standing members have accumulated good karma and reputation for helping out others with providing helpful information and being a trusted part of the community. Heck, it took me about 15 months to get a badge, so it can take time.

Ok, thanks a lot, Pupik. 👍

I had no idea of the changes over the time, I assumed (yeah, I know...) it had been like this since day one.

Still, on the place I hang around mostly (GT4 Photo & Video Galleries), there isn't much use of this feature, at least recently, so it's hard for anyone to earn the 'Quality Posts badge', unless you drift (at least occasionally) onto other parts of the site where I'm sure this reward tool is used more often.

Not that having that badge (or any other for that matter) under my avatar is my lifetime achievement or anything, it would just be nice for everyone if it was used in a fair way.
This also means 'giving' -rep when it has to be done.

Actually, I got a lot of rep from other members concerning the GT4 section, and I don't even hang around there much. I just pass along some info if it helps, because that's the point of me being here. However, there's still lots of questions I won't answer, because even 2 minutes of searching will help with that. But for obscure stuff that isn't normally asked, then I'll assist if I know the answer. If I don't know, I won't answer. Simple as that.

Of course, lots of members who rep you in the GT4 don't have any rep power, since they are new, but it's nice to get noticed, anyhow.

I don't think the rep system has much effect on anything anymore. Since the requirments were raised, very few people have earned the badge.

DWA
It's all a popularity contest to me... those people that wish they were still in High school with their popularity group. Sad...
I kinda feel the same way, it can also open up a little bit of jealousy (not sure if it has been publicy acknowledged before or not), especially when everyone in a topic goes "+ rep!", "well said, + rep" etc etc.
You kinda get the feeling that you're being left out and like DWA said, it kinda brings back memories of being the last person to be picked for some sort of game or whatever at school. Yes, the solution would be to make a post worthy of being + repped, but how does the average joe go about doing that?

These 'feelings' i've described are my own and i'm sure they belong to other people too. But even if i got repped for my every post after this i still wouldn't be a fan of the system.

But hey, can't please everyone right!

That, and the fact it's impossible to see which of your posts get repped easily (so if you get +repped or -repped, you see the comment and know what you're doing right or wrong) does make the system a bit pointless.

Seconded.

On that, a question more towards the moderators: Since the change of the reputation system (not being able to view how many you've got), has there been any abuse of the system ever since?
