I didn't wanna start a conversation in a thread that had nothing to do with bass gutair playing.

I was wondering if these kits are any good. Fender makes one that comes with everything, amp, gutair, cords etc.

Anyways: I was just wondering if there was any advice anyone could offer me (Pako). I currently play Trumpet, so I will have to learn bass cleff, but I don't think that will be to hard.

I want to be able to play it in my colleges Jazz band, we have been struggling to find a solid bass player.

I think those are squire bass', which are entry level guitars... I would think that for the money, you would probably be better off buying used equipment.

remember, you get what you pay for. The amp in the package would be fine for practicing, but absolutely not suitable for a gig. Does your jazz band have equipment that you could use?

I'll say that that package is a good starter kit for practicing and learning how to play, and the guitar should be OK for gig...

Hope that answers your questions..

If I were to start to look for used a equipment, what would you reccommend. Brands? What size do I need. I don't even know where to begin.

I think the school has an amp, but its huge if I remember correctly.

For Jazz? I would look into a Fender Jazz bass. :D Preferably a Standard Jazz or Standard Jazz Deluxe 4 or 5 string. In all honesty, starting out I would stick with the 4 string. If your school already has a bass amp/speakers than great, you can use it for gigs. Look into a small practice amp like a Crate, Peavy, or Fender. THey won't cost you that much and sound great for the money, especially for practicing.

Hit musiciansfriend.com to find deals.
Then go to one of your local mid-size stores and play the one you like. If the store in town is only a few dollars higher, (no more than $50) buy in town, as they will be eager to help with set up and what-have-you.
I will also advise you to buy as much instrument as you can afford.
If your guitar, be it a bass or a six-string will do nothing but frustrate if it of poor quality and hard to play.
If you have a "Music-Go-Round" try them first. They will give you a good price and a good selection of used instruments.
They also have a pretty liberal return policy if you find that you are not destined to play bass.

Hey thats good your getting into the bass.

Anyway I have a Ibanez Sr300 and I like it. It was 300 bucks brand new and is a good entry level bass. I also picked up a Crate 50 Watt amp which is good enough for me.

I say go Ibanez for a beginner bass. I don't care for cheaper Fenders they are kinda crappy. The expensive ones are nice but I say stay away from the cheap ones.

Danelectro makes decent entry level stuff. I play guitar and keyboards but when I wanted a bass I picked up a Danelectro for under $200 and really liked it. I've found used equipment is overpriced.

Ya there is a lot of over priced used stuff but there is some cheap stuff.

You might want to try eBay?

I would never buy a musical instrument off Ebay, or even without trying it out first. Ebay is filled with unscrupulous sellers. Many, many lies on Ebay. Stay away from Ebay.

Ebay has a bass called Johnson, anyone heard of it? They are selling those begining kits as well.

All those begining kits are the same... crap. Get seperate pieces. You might pay a little more but it's worth it. I'm sure you'd be disappointed with one of those kits.

Dont get a Johnson they are terriable....just FYI
