I give up, just not good enough

I've been stuck on the Formula GT race for a week now. I just can't drive this car for crap. I can get out front for 5 - 10 laps on any of the tracks, but I can never put a whole race together. To the point I've not placed in the top 3 yet in the first race, even.

I've golded everything else in a-spec easily, trying to choose close matching cars to the competition to keep it fun, but this one's beyond me. Sucks, but I think I'm just going to abandon that entire championship and just play other parts of the game. Not sure what else to do.

I've normally play with a ds3, but I also have a HKS controller, and a DF Pro. I know about being smooth, etc, I've driven quite a bit in iracing as well... in two different indycar leagues, and do fine there. It's something about the FGT and these events. When I'm in the lead, they're all over my tail, and force me into a mistake. Slide a corner, get bumped, whatever, then they're just flying gone, and it's over.

I know others can do it, but I'm just really missing something. I've used the setups I've found on the forums, and tweaked it for myself, no help. (Driving aids all off, abs 1, tcs 1, varying combos of that, it doesn't matter. I can get to first, I just can't hold it).

Sooo frustrating. It's just not fun to keep trying at this point.

If you can get out in front then you are good enough to win, you just need to keep practicing - which will improve your consistency.

If you haven't already, try reducing ride height and throttle sensitivity (of the car, not the controller)

Had same kind of problem in GT4 i think. Can't remember how i overcame it though... maybe just get more used to the insane downforce and power of those cars.

I've tried it with all aids on, all off, varying combos.

I can get in the lead, but no comfort zone at all, so one slip or tap and it's 4th or 5th instantly.

I've had this problem..I tend to race better when there are cars ahead of me so I can use them to anticipate when to brake etc. As soon as I'm in first, and if I'm still learning the track I tend to lose 1st pretty quickly. I recommend time trial solo racing on the track with the car in question until you can pull good consistent time.

Of course the lame brained a.i. will brake too late and pit maneuver you spinning into the sand seemingly on purpose. I have more faith that PD will give us hood mounted weapons to vent our frustration rather than improve the a.i.

I'm not even going to attempt the championship, I can smell the stress leaking from it's seams a mile away.

Kinda off-topic: is the NASCAR event easy?

Take a break from it for a week or so. Run the fgt at the dream car event for some practice in it. Youll get it eventually. If all the events were won easily it wouldnt be much fun.

I had no problems with the nascar event, except Daytona, where someone pulled a Keselowski on me on the last lap, and I went from fighting for first to spinning through the grass.

For the road courses make sure you have abs & tcs on, though. I couldn't do it without!

Read this wrong: Thought it read as you were ahead by 5 - 10 laps LOL

I watched my friend Gold every race lastnight including the rain events with relative ease. (he races shifter karts so this is up his alley) With him pulling clean laps consistently, no off courses or any cheating the best he could muster was 10-20 SECOND lead overall through the majority of the races after the 20 laps.

You need more practice or find someone to race the car for you. That is what I had to do.

He means he is holding the lead for 5-10 laps, not lapping them BY 5-10.

I drove a shifter kart last year IRL at a sponsor event... holy cow did I suck bad. That might explain some things.

And yeah, I don't think I ever get more then a 2 second lead or so.

In my opinion, the FGT is an incredibly challenging car to drive. Not being able to gold the FGT Championship doesn't mean squat, I think. It jusst means that you probably (like me) can't get to terms with the FGT properly.

That's why I hate events that only allow one specific car. If that car doesn't suit you, you're toast.

I hate this event too. Just seems crazy but I won't stop trying until I get it.eventually ill just wake up one day and lap these suckers. If bob can I can.

(OP) I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like you're on the right track as far as pace. I just had to realize that as long as I kept a consistent race pace (like less than the qualifying lap pace I thought you needed) the opponents were pretty chicken about making a move on you. You just have to get used to them on your tail all the time.

What really helped me too besides some of the aids, was a few tweaks to firm up the suspension. For me it felt like the front end really dives alot under breaking stock and upsets the car on turn in.

good luck.

Having raced through it and won the championship - these would be my tips.

1.) Buy the soft tyres - any tyre can be used. Ensure that it's selected before each race, GT5 likes to change your tyre choices....

2.) Go to the tuning forum and find the popular FGT tune (Will edit this post with a direct link) - I used it and it made the car far LESS squirmy.

3.) Whatever you do, you need to limit any serious mistakes. You'll never be able to distance the AI by a huge amount, one spin and they'll be past you.

- Another thing I would recommend, if you have the game, is play the F1 2010 game, gets you used to the speed and use of 7 gears. Handling is not the same, obviously, but I reckon it did wonders for me being able to handle this car - plus I had a really good understanding of Monaco and Suzuka. The one I found the hardest was the Nurburgring GP race, didn't win it - nor did I even attempt Suzuka in the wet.

Skip it and come back at a later time. I don't have gold in two of those races (Monaco and one other).... I'll get them later when I can just focus on that aspect.

1 - done
2 - done
3 yeah, that's kinda the issue. there's just no margin for error. At some point it stopped being fun, and turned into a chore.

Then stop doing it. At least for a while. The extreme hall is kinda annoyiing (to me) anyways. I dislike the NASCAR event as well. Because I dislike driving the NASCAR cars...

Anyways, getting frustrated because an event turns into a chorse isn't going to get you anywhere...

Depending on the track, I will bump the TCS up to 2 or 3, and turn on the ASM and mild active steering. On less technical tracks I can turn these down or off. I'm 35 years old and while I used to be able to twitch-game back in the NES days, I can't really do it anymore. Don't worry about the "machismo" of turning the driving aids off. Adjust them until you find a level of difficulty that makes the game fun for you. 👍

I have given up on the FGT for now. I am Lv 30 so I can ignore it for as long as I like. I completed the Indy 500 which took 2 hours 25 minutes and got me 268K Experience (and a miserable 270K credits).

I have tried it (even with a totally refurbished FGT which has 935HP) and couldn't even get first position. I will have to have another try and see if I can get into first position and then drive as cautiously as possible.

Nothing wrong with taking a break after every 10 laps and in between races. You drive better when you relax.

Skid recovery. It's disgusting how much it helps. I hate that assist, but you will win with it. Just goose the gas and slam the brakes late into every corner. You will win.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I can hold the lead for about 10 laps and then one turn comes along and totally screws me. Then 8 cars go flying be never to be seen again. For 4.8 million Cr. I hate this car lol.

My biggest problem with the Formula GT race is that I use a controller but only have 1 hand. The very 1st race I finished 4 laps down, next race I finished in 8th place. I know eventually I will win with lots of practice. Like the OP I have been in 1st place for 5 or 6 laps then the pressure gets to me and I crash, race over! So for those of you that thinks the Formula GT race is challenging, give it a try with 1 hand, it's a whole new ball game. :)

turning off all driver aids in that car is the worst thing you can do, I have all driver aids off on all cars except this one. Do an oil change and put the couple things you can on it in the tuning shop, put traction control on at least 4, turn ON the skid recovery force, I have asm off on mine but im may help to turn it on, once you get first the only goal should be to not crash and you can easily win gold for the championship
