There comes a time for most of us when we become restless. We want to experience new things. Mostly we can suppress these urges when they arise. Sometimes we can't. Sometimes when you least expect it something can pop up that is to good to ignore.

Anyone care to guess what kind of car I'm buying on Monday? I bet you'll get it on the first try. 💡

Mazda MX-5 Miata

Roc got it right. The answer is always Miata.

Its a 1990 model. Cosmetics are rough but it has just 125k on it. Its a solid runner and only needs basic maintenance. I'm buying it from my work which just happens to be a Mazda dealership. They're giving me a hell of a deal too. Its been on ebay for only a day and its already been bid well over what they've agreed to give it to me for.

If it's on eBay, don't they have to sell it?

They reserve the right to sell locally. Its a dealership after all. Seeing as I talked to them before hand I had dibs.

Is it automatic? :p

Way you were talking about the 3's, I thought you might go Mazda, but for newer zoom-zoom. I love Mazda's. Don't forget to haggle for even lower price. You can't pay full price for car that doesn't keep you dry in the rain.

Its a 5 speed. I love mazda but I can't afford the newer zoom zoom that I want. If I told you the price you'd laugh. I have no need to haggle. They're practically giving it to me.

Plans would be a hard top, new suspension, fix the exhaust and maybe some wheels in the spring? The engine is surprisingly quick for being a 1.6l. That might just be the weight difference between it and my MK1 though.

I was just kidding about the transmission. If you actually even entertained the idea of an automatic Miata, I'd fly over there, slap you myself.

Guy I work with have two Miatas(his wife has two Mazdas... :odd:), and while he doesn't have hardtop for either one, he did have the soft top of the older one replaced with an aftermarket one. It was quite a few years ago, but I think he purchased a kit online, then had a technician we work with install it. He seems to think that good top will keep most of the rain out, but never completely. All cars I've owned came with a roof, so I couldn't say. :D

With such high miles, I wonder if the motor is OK? My coworker's, I think his had 100~200k miles, and all he does is use full synthetic. I thought he did have to have one repair on that motor, but I can't remember what, maybe nothing. I am of the impression that they are fairly reliable cars?

Since when is 125,000 high miles? Its just broken in! I literally drove it off the lot on the test drive at 124,996 miles.

Anyway I'm now aware of the early model short nosed crank issue. I suspect so long as it has oil in it and good belt tension I'll be ok. Maybe check the crank bolt for excess wear. So long as the seal isn't leaking I probably won't touch it.

If the crank pulley hasn't gone yet it probably won't go any time soon. My 1.6 was fine besides burning oil (expected) and I definitely drove it hard often.

As long as it was taken care of, 125k is nothing. The bottom end in mine had 207k on it when I bought it.

Congratulations on the new car! Miata's are loads of fun!

I want to ask a Miata related question, would a Hardtop with the Soft top removed be lighter than without a hardtop and with a soft top?

Liked those rims when they first came out, but how much for the missing center cap? :D
