So I've been driving nearly a year, except my policy began when I was on my provisional. So this policy is about to expire and I'm told by my insurer I have 1 no claims bonus...

..Except I have had my full licence less than a year. So when I went to accept my sub £1000 quote from Admiral it occured I hadn't had it quite a year, so I told them. Bam, quote is now £1800. Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo.

If someone else has an accident and takes you with them, you'll love it to bits.

Is it just a quote or have you actually taken out the policy? (Not that it matters, it's easy enough to cancel it.) Churchill has always been pretty good for me.

I'm with Churchill after leaving Admiral due to their ridiculous Renewals department. It took me 3 phonecalls to explain that I wanted the policy cancelled, then they sent me two letters, one asking for £600 and another for £1067. I rang them up again to complain and was told my cancellation hadn't been put through! So I then had to be put through to Renewals to cancel it yet again.

Eventually they did that and I've now switched to Churchill who gave me a better quote anyway.

I've been with Admiral for umpty years - they always give me the cheapest quote (though in the past I've alternated between Admiral and Churchill) and currently insure all three of my cars for a combined £750.

Yup car insurance sucks, I've been trying to get my front windscreen fixed for two weeks now and the insurance company is screwing me around. First they claim they didn't get Motor City Mini's faxes on the estimate, then they said it was to expensive. Honestly why do I pay all the money for comprehensive coverage if I can't use it?

It's interesting to see how insurance is in other parts of the world though, the UK's system seems very different to me.

My big issue now is I can't get a quote cause all teh comparison sites keep telling me I can't have more no claims than I have held my licence! :banghead: But I do!!

It's actually not true. You can own a car but not even have a licence. And of course if you own it, you must insure it - which you can do without a licence either.

So you can have 1yr NCD very easily. Admiral have only reacted to what you've told them - that you don't have a full year's NCD. In fact you do, and have documentary evidence from your insurer to prove it (your renewal is proof of NCD).

Call them back!

Sounds like insurance alright...making everyone jump through hoops when anything happens.

Does England have one-way car insurance?

Sadly not, Admiral know I have 11 months licence and 1 NCB, their system accepts that. It's the system used by Tescocompare.com, moneysupermarket.com and Churchill that down't accept those terms.

You'll need to speak to someone on the phone. Try Direct-Line and, when they ask how long you've had your licence, tell them "Since (xxx) last year.". They'll likely say "Almost a year then? We'll put that down as a year."

Or ship up to your nearest brokers.

I think it's also called liability only. Basically it only covers the car you hit.

Yep - Third Party Only.

We have three levels:
Third Party Only - Covers damage to anything your car contacts.
Third Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT) - As above, but with your car covered for theft of/from it and fire damage.
Fully Comprehensive - Covers everything (except damage caused by conventional, biological, chemical or radiological warfare - and I'm not kidding).

We call is 3rd party insurance.

I did speak to the guy on the phone, and as my passed date is 30/10/07 it's barely 11 months :/

Brokers or my renewal of £1300 it is.

My Focus costs £420 a year for me the missues, I have 4 years NCD, she has 3 years NCD, though she did crash one of our last cars (into a stationary bus I might add), the NCD was protected.

We're with LV, I don't particularly rate them though they were cheap. Er.

im with admiral too, best i could find tho checking up swiftcover might be cheaper when i renew. i also went with admiral cos they did a 10 month no claims accelerator, very useful starting out.
best talk to a human and work it out right

Mine is £520 fully comp on the 500, I'm 22 years old and it's garaged overnight. Not too bad IMO considering the area I live in!

Get car insurance. Cancel after a month once license held for 12 months. Get new insurance.

£2800 first year
£1400 second year.

Live in Worst insurance post code you can get other than "refer".

Next years premium most likely to be 3 grand again once new car arrives.

Eek. I'd rather drive a piece of poo than pay that for insurance. Hang on... I do

My first year was £1400. My current premium five years down the line is £210. Get in. For the quotes I've been doing on my next potential car, Churchill is coming up cheapest for a good 50% of the cars.

@Evan: As Famine said, as you have documents showing you've got a full years no-claims you should be able to go to pretty much any insurer and start off with a year's NCB.

Wouldn't I incur some sort of cancellation cost for that? If I can get a months cover for sub £200 (which shouldn't be too difficult) I'll do exactly that.

Yeah it's not really the dispute of 1 years no claims. You see my insurance has been since I was on provisional so I've aquired my one years no claims before I've aquired a full years driving. Now while this confuses the hell out of online comparison sites, when I speak to people in person it works fine, just means a huge jump in premium compared to if I'd had a full years driving and NCB.

That's not quite how American insurance works. Here we have 3 levels:

Liability - Also called "minimum" insurance, because it's the minimum legally required. Only covers damage to third parties caused by your car. No coverage at all for your car.

Collision - your car is covered for accident damage as well. Theft and fire (if the car is the source) is I believe covered in this too. If the car is the victim of, say, your garage burning down, then it falls under your homeowner's insurance.

Comprehensive - your car is covered for anything except warfare as described above. Mostly used for glass replacement.

Unless of course you have Farm Bureau Insurance, then even if you have comprehensive you aren't going to get your glass fixed...unless of course you use subpar aftermarket parts.

don't they let you guys make payments?! 2-3000 nicker is ridiculous. and I thought your petrol prices were through the roof :P

yes, some of us run state minimum over here. I also have Uninsured/Under insured. people still try to drive without insurance :P

be jealous, fellas. I pay only £200 a YEAR!

You can make payments monthly but the interest charges are ridiculous, it's cheaper to put the full amount on a low interest credit card and pay it off that way, which is what I've done.

It all depends on your car, location and age. I could have insured my Astra for £300 a year, but it was an old car whereas the 500 is a newer car so it needed a higher level of cover, hence the £530.

Yeah the monthly installments were last year equivalent to paying for 13 months if paid all at once. But with the current climate it's crept even higher than that.

I think I'm going to accept my insurers renewal, £1300, getting an extra months insurance will only save me £50 and the chance is I may not get the full year licence entitlement. So my NCB will always be ahead of my licence :irked:

I just usually save up a little before my car insurance is due and pay it all up front. Dont want to give the banks or insurance companies anymore money than I have to.

I usually pay monthly but for a couple of years in a row I paid it in one big lump straight away because it was cheaper and I had the money. In retrospect, I'll always pay it monthly from now on, because even if it's more expensive at least it leaves more in your account each month and gives you a chance to earn in the meantime!

Do people file insurance claims for glass replacement? Someone would have to break every single one of my windows before I filed a claim.

I filed one, or I'm in the process of filing one. I have a $100 deductible and apparently the price of a Cooper's windscreen is something like $700.

I have the same sentiment.

Damn, must be because its a niche vehicle in the states!

In europe it would be much cheaper.
