This thing is so annoying. Why can't the fullsize car itself change to the colors you are looking at? The colors often look much different on your actual car than on the stupid tiny paint chip model. It's so small it's hard to tell the difference between a lot of the hues. And I have a 50" 1080p plasma TV...

I've had to burn through so many different colors to get the one I really want because of this horrible system.

THIS is one of things that still annoys the crap out of me with gt5. I don't know who decided this was how you select paints, but it's probably the absolute worst way it could be done.

In reality, you can't do that. But then again, in reality, you can't race on 5 different tracks from around the world in a matter of 30 minutes.

Sooooo, I really don't understand why they did this, either. The things that go on at PD headquarters....

In reality you can see a colour model of your car using computer images. So you should be able to do it in GT5.

haha I know. I just wanted to talk about the tracks. I use it every time someone asks, why can't we do this? And it always works out.

OMG that is so bad, I hate it. I have to spend so much time checking every shade to make sure I am choosing the right one. The worst is black because there are so many and they basically look all the same, but as soon as it's put onto the car everything changes. Matte black sucks too since there are mat black, matte black, Matt black, and AMG something. Each one is a type of matte black yet slightly different.

i hate paint chips. why not just give us a color grid to select our color. 50% of gt5 is collecting stuff.... it gets old really fast

Hey, at least with that little fake car you can get something of a idea what color it is. This is the only place (I know of) where you can get any preview whatsoever of a color - unless you happen to already have a car that's already painted in that color.

The "paint chip" element is a part of it, but the whole "vehicle aesthetics" aspect of GT5 is fairly disappointing if you ask me...

I'm not looking for a full livery editor, mind you, but why can't I do things like:
  • Apply a two-tone paint job
  • Add racing stripes (or change the color of existing stripes)
  • Change the interior color scheme
  • Change the color of a convertible's top

OK, I've managed to put together some sweet-looking rides and all with what limited customization options I have, but there's so much more I could do if I only had the opportunity!

Peace...

The paint chip model is pretty terrible.

now that i think about it, the actual chips themselves are pretty terrible sometimes. especially when you get a chip and you think"ooh im gonna paint this r8 lms" but then you cant.:grumpy: what the HELL, man!

also i think one of the blues for the ruf rgt is WAY off, instead of getting this dark blue car you get a color similar to the sky blue you used to paint with in pre-k. Not that it's a bad color though:tup:

Yeah, I do wish they had a preview of the whole car you were painting...rather than having to imagine what it's going to come out like. :D

Don't go ruining everyone's GT5 enjoyment by introducing sensible options.

How could you paint a car in advance? Paint's sticky, you know...

it's ok to me because if they preview the car color of 1000+ cars with 5000+ colors it will take a very long time to finish

Huh?

EDIT: The paint is drawn on each car 'on demand' using the base colour with the reflections layer overlaid (that's how metallic, chrome etc. is made). The models aren't pre-rendered!

The model car looks quite good, I'd like to have it as some sort of art piece in my bedroom . But, when it comes to function it's a mediocre utility when showing the possible colour of your car/wheels, sometimes the paintjob looks good on the model and when applied to the specific car/wheels it sucks too much. Seriously what's so hard about allowing you to preview the paint on your actuall car/wheels?

[*]ADDING PRE-SELECTED STICKERS AND DECALS, LIKE RACING NUMBERS AND CAR/AFTER MARKET PARTS MAKERS LOGOS, IF I MAY ADD

YES!!! THIS IS THE SOLUTION!!! We improve over our current limited (but still, very much improved, which I thank to PD) customization system and we avoid the Forza-like danger of having kids racing Pink Veyrons with penises and the F word drawn all over them 👍👍👍

Give me one reason why it will take a long time to finish. I'll give you one reason why it won't take a long time to finish. A preview option is just telling the game what it's supposed to do (paint the car/wheels) but with an "undo" option, just make the paint scheme not definitive until you give an ok button. Make the game paint the car, as it does now, but only save the car's data when the player says so, allowing to try as many paintjobs as you want for the car, without making it a definite change. (I'm sorry if I didn't made myself clear :ouch:).

The game still doesn't save until you exit GT-Auto though, right? If so, apply all the paints you want until you find the right one, remember the name of it, and then quit/restart the game and apply that colour. Can't remember what thread I saw this tip in, but it has helped me a couple times.

However, why they even had that silly little model (OK, for wheels that's one thing) in the first place baffles me.

Though what you say is a solution, I find it to be too much of a trouble that shouldn't be there in the first place and could be fixed easily :ouch:.

It's more real that you don't get to see it on the car first. Just saying. It makes me mad sometimes to but I understand it real that way.

+1, This would have saved me alot of paint chips, if they had included some sort of preview before painting.

Personally i found more representative or best preview for paint the little wheel model.

And agree with OP.

No, it's much less real. When you choose a paint for a car the spray shop always has software that lets you see it on your model (or similar) in various lighting modes (as in GT5 when you buy from the dealership).

A custom respray is expensive - there's no way you'd have one done without seeing the colour rendered on your car first.

I love the paint chip system!!! In all the games with the grid ideas, anything people create mostly only sits in a very few colours, but paint chips I think are so much more... creative! And there are lots of odd pearl and matte esque effects in the paint chips that would be Damn near impossible to re create with the nfs style grid.
However, the lack of a Useful preview is just insane! Possibly the stupidist thing in the game.

The best thing to do is make a backup of your save just before you go exploring paints. Paint it with each potential colour you want to see. That way you can preview the finish. Then, once you've decided on the one you want to keep, exit the game, over-write your current game save with your backup and you'll be back to the point before you painted it the first time, with an absolute idea of how the paint you want will look.
Check out my examples in my Colour comparison tests gallery.

(Edit: You don't need to reset to your backup save each time you change a paint, keep running through colours all day if you like! You'll get all your money and chips back when you reset to your backup)

Special Colors should be collectables, like Two-tone, Chrome and Matte ones. Regular and Metallic should only be 3 slides. Hue, Saturation and Brightness. Imagine the awesome looking cars that could be produced.

OT-> Most awesome thing would be a build your own car where you choose any car. Strip it clean and choose any engine to put inside. Then drivetrain and all that stuff. Of course this would be a special race with only custom cars, preferably online. RWD Fiat 500 with a rear mounted fully tuned Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 V8! Thats super happy fun time :)

Even better would be if you can do a demo drive with your new paint because out on the road some color choices become regrettable :)

I understand this can be done. My point is you shouldn't have to do something like this in the first place. A "demo" of the paint on your fullsize car would be insanely easy to program into the game.

The whole concept of paint chips is dumb. You should just unlock fancier paints as you progress through the levels if they want to limit it so some people can pretend they are actually accomplishing something, maybe link some of the really unusual ones to tasks to give people something to do. Once you reach level 40(ok maybe in both A and B), you should get unlimited paint of every color.

And, on-topic, you absolutely should be able to preview the paint on your actual car just like in pretty much every other game ever. My favorite argument has to be the "you can't see paint on a real car until you put paint on it" one. CG preview renderings aside, we're talking about a game in which when you buy a car it comes along with a one time only possibility of painting anything in the world that color ever again, unless you buy another car in that same exact color. Yeah, lets make sure we maintain the 100% realism level this game strives for.

For a game that accidentally screws up so many things that occur in real life that it really has no business screwing up, I don't find "well, its like that in real life" to be a valid defense for stupid game design.

It looks very professional, to some extent, but it's very annoying. I just deal with it unless the paint on the mini car doesn't match up with the paint on the car I paint after it's painted.
