I have 2 car choices.... (help)

Ok, my dad bought a 1984 Porsche 944 (NA), and gave it to me (like a year ago this happend)

and more recently he bought a 1987 2nd Gen rx7 (NA).


We did research and found out that the porsche is a monster when it comes to maitinance. (plus it already has a few problems that can be fixed)

My dad offers me two (to,too, tew, 2) options.

1: Sell the porsche and use the money to repair the rx7 (front struts and some misc small things)

or

2: Keep the Porsche (cause we love it oh so much) and pay for any matinance problems that come up in the future.

Just wondering, The RX7 is a Great car, I am really happy to have the option of having it, but from what I hear the 944 is just so much better. :nervous:


Edit: If anyone says "poor mans porsche" I will lose much respect for you *annoyed*
 
That, was a rather fast decision. Im not just looking at Power, I am looking at thire ability to corner (and other factors, like matinince etc)

Mind you, I do plan to take them out to the track by my area, Its called thunder hill and its an acual circut, not a drag track.

I think the RX7 is weak in both horsepower and handling - really it should be an obvious choice, except for the good point on the maintenance costs on the Porsche. You have to decide if you'd rather have the dynamically superior Porsche or the mechanically superior Mazda - it's not just a comparison of usable performance.

I also posted on what I like to call the 'Ricer' forums, and as I expected. The first guy said RX7, man they are annoying over there. :crazy:
 
Trust the M5Power - until he starts bagging on Lotus. When that happens, just ignore him. But he's right in this case. It's the Porsche.
 
dump the Porsche...we have a half a dozen sitting in an Auto graveyard, here
 
I'd go with the Porsche. Aren't earlier RX-7s horrid to maintain (parts are hard to find, the seals for the rotary engine weren't too good), and aren't they also terrible on gas?

To add to that, a well sorted Porshce 944 that is maintained, not just fixed when something breaks probably will be a better car in the long run.
The 944 is faster, handles better, and is better looking than the 2nd gen RX-7.
Not that the RX-7 is ugly.
Plus, when you say "Hey do you wanna ride in my Porshce?" It will carry more weight with the honeys than "Hey, do you wanna ride in my RX-7?":lol:
 
I'd sell the RX-7 and fix up the Porsche in a heartbeat. The 944 is a certifiably great car, and the problem areas are well known in the 944 community, so you will be able to find tons of advice on how to cost-effectively maintain the car.

Where do you live? A lot of times you'll find used import dealers who normally deal in and service old Mercedes and old Audi will just be happy for the business with a Porsche; you don't need to take a Porsche to a certified mechanic for it to be well-maintained.
 
you do not have to have a certified porsche mechanic, but you better have a mechanic familiar with german cars. and have a porsche mechanic on the side.
id keep the porker, bin the rex7.

this would also be agerat opportunity for you to learn a lot about car maintenence. porsche clubs are very helpful, even if they do look down on you for not having a 911, and there are a lot of resources online that you can access.
 
Well, we are acually close friends with a Mercedes - BMW Mechanic


But when he looked at the rear axle, he said he just could not do what needs to be done :nervous: (he was looking at another customers car, that needed the exact thing as mine)


(btw, keeping the Porsche doesint mean we will sell the rx7)
 
You own an older Porsche, therefore it needs constant maintience to keep it in good shape. But that's just it, once it's in good shape it'll be so far better than the RX7 could ever be in my opinion.
