Let's say I have an application on DVD that I would like to make a backup of, because the DVD has sustained a fair bit of damage and I don't want to go buy a new copy for no reason.

Since I don't have a DVD burner, I can't just make a direct copy, I'd have to convert it to CD(s).

Can that be accomplished? With what program? I googled and just found converting DVD to VCD and that's not what I'm going for.

I use this to make ISO images from CD's...

http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm (hopefully you can make it work with a DVD)

Once you get the ISO image, you can put the files you want on each CD into a separate folder, and that same tool will let you make an ISO with the contents of the folder.

Then you can use the tool to burn the ISO to a disc.

I've done all these steps but I started with a commercial CD rather than a DVD.

If it is a movie DVD then it's a different ballgame, I have no idea what you want to do there.

It's for an application, so yeah that could work as a backup. But it would have to be rebuilt as a DVD ISO and mounted if it were ever going to be reinstalled. As the installation would call for files in the same way if it were still a DVD. At least I think.

I don't want to go through that much work. I'd much rather have it say "Insert Disk 2 To Continue Installation"

If you're wanting to back it up, you won't be able to reinstall from a split set of files, you'd have to reassemble the DVD. Splitting it with WinZip or something else makes sense to just back it up for future reassembly, but you'd HAVE to reassemble it to use it. DVD burners are cheaper every day, about half what my first CD burner was, and that was after THEY were cheap.
