My laptop suddenly lost its audio. It happened yesterday when I returned from work and turned it on. It went to a WinXP blue screen and something about cleaning my disc volume for dirty information. After it booted up, I had no more sound. The curious thing is that I have done diagnostic tests and the sound card actually works, but not on Windows XP.

Sorry , but XP is re-install county , if your soundcards fine then something in hardware management ( the layering of the drivers ) can mysteriously block usage .

Few things to check. Have a look at the speaker icon next to the clock at the bottom right of the screen. Double click on it and look to see if any of the Mute boxes are ticked - most especially Volume Control and Wave.

Right click on My Computer on the desktop and go to Properties then Hardware then Device Manager and look at the Sound, Video and Games controllers and report back.

i have the solution! screw xp and install 2000. just kidding :)

what kinda laptop do you have? the more info you post the better
