Get a Saxo :p

Do you have any needs, say for a 5door?

Have you seen the premiums for them now! :guilty:
Heh, I just noticed our avatars have the same timing but when mine starts yours ends.

Civic

Realible, gas effiecient, inexpensive matainence, etc.

IMO go for a 4door LX, better insurance.

ExigeExcel
Wait...You expect to get one of those cars for 4 grand and be able to insure them?
Exactly what I thought.

The BMW, Subaru and Mercedes are way out of the question for running costs. Well all of the cars are hard actualy.

With fuel prices rising in the UK massively too, the only cars there that is (hard to say "ideal") is the Proton, but you don't want that, and the Civic.

Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec 2000 -Slightly too high engine for insurance.
Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0 1999 -Forget it.
BMW 318i S Coupe 1993 -Badge, forget it.
Volkswagen Golf 2.0 GTi 16v 5dr 1994 -Parts and service forget it.
Hyundai Coupe 2.0 16v 1996 - It's a 2.0, 'nuff said.
Toyota Avensis 1.8 GLS 1998 - Meh. Probably abit fuel hungry.
Mercedes Benz 190E K reg 1992 - Pfffff.
Honda Civic 1.5 LSi Coupe 1994 - Spec too much I would have thought for insurance.
Saab 900 2.3l 1995 -2.3l!? Gotta be kidding.
Proton Compact 1.5 2000 - Proton, wouldn't consider it.

I feel like a mini Doug :D

A Fiat Panda Active might be in price 1 or 2 years from now :D

Get a Logan. Just make sure you don't turn sharply at 40 mph.

impreza?! bmw?! are you crazy?! it costs me £900+ to insure my rover 214 id hate to find out how much theyd need :scared: anyway you want a cheap banger for ya first car cos your probably gonna have a few knocks in it when you start out 👍
then if your really stupid youll keep it for no reason and spend loads of money on crap from halfords  arg i hate that

Hey, when gas is six bucks a gallon....

If it were me, I'd take the Subaru, but insurance is a nightmare over there. Still, I'm getting raped too, paying almost 500 a month for my '02 WRX, with no tickets and no claims on my record. It's all area here, a lot of accidents in Hollywood thanks to the clubbers who get drunk and crash on the strip, and the theft is pretty bad in Hollywood proper, I'm in a nice area but it's the same postal code.

Pushbike like "Race Idiot" said...Possibly a Go-Kart.

On a serious note: Buy any car that gets you form A to B safely and effeciently, you have a whole life time to buy a better car..

Though I certainly DO NOT LOVE our stupid little Saxo, you're not all that wrong. We've had the car for 42000 kms now - and the money we've poured into it comes down to one 100000km check up and one 120000 km check up. That makes 7300 DKK which is stupidly cheap for keeping a car running in DK. The exhaust was changed by yours truly (over 2 times) and IIRC was around 1500 DKK including a new cat. So around US$ 1500 running cost over 3 years and 3 months..

That - And it's a POP to insure. Small car, small engine, nothing fancy...

Ring up for insurance on any of those - except possibly the Civic and Proton - and all you'll get is muffled laughter. My first year's insurance for my 998cc, 15 year old Mini, was £930 Third Party Fire & Theft.

After buying and insuring the car - any off that list - you'll have no money for fuel etc. So start again, looking at hatchbacks and such (Saxo, Corsa, Fiesta/Ka etc.) and be a bit more senseible.

only £930 for the whole year??! what was that per month? and how many miles do you get from it on one tank?

Mate your living in dreamland insurance wise. Are you gonna be the first driver or go under one of your parents names. Go check out norwich union insurance and get some qoutes on that. If you fill it all in and they say they cant come up with a qoute online that basically means they aint gonna insure you unless your willing to pay about 7 grand a year or higher.

Insurance for me 17 just started driving for a 2003 golf 1.6 is 2 grand a year under my mums name as second driver. If I was first driver it would have been 5.5 grand a year. Wouldnt ecven consider insuring me for a gti.

Below are my insurance predictions fully comp as first and second driver.

Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec 2000 - Much too high insurance 2 grand 2nd driver 6 grand 1st driver
Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0 1999 -Forget it wont get insured and a company that would charge redicoulos amount
BMW 318i S Coupe 1993 -Got friends with E36 bimma worth 8K pays 4 grand 4 insurance. Dont know if it 1st or 2nd driver but forget it mate.
Volkswagen Golf 2.0 GTi 16v 5dr 1994 -Parts and service wont get insured forget it.
Hyundai Coupe 2.0 16v 1996 - Again forget it.
Toyota Avensis 1.8 GLS 1998 - Wouldnt be seen dead in one. Why would you? Insurance about 2 grand 2nd driver 5 grand 1st.
Mercedes Benz 190E K reg 1992 - Pfffff. Too costly too run ugly anyway.
Honda Civic 1.5 LSi Coupe 1994 - First reasonable choice. Wont be pickin up the ladies however.
Saab 900 2.3l 1995 -2.3l!? Why? Ugly out of your league for insurance and servicing
Proton Compact 1.5 2000 - If you really want it then ok. Just be prepared to be made fun off.

Mate with your budget get a saxo or a 206. Atleast if you get like all black 206 but on some 17s and a decent sound system black out the windows and but in some smoked rear clusters and you will have a sexy car ready to pick up ladies. Basically your first car will be slowwwwwwwwwwwwww. But even saying that my friends who have 1.2s adn 1.4s still get more than enough speed out of their cars around town. BTW once you have 1 years NCB your insurance will go down by 3/4 by what it was previously.

Have fun. And start saving.

That was in my own name. Don't forget that you can't build a NCB (No Claims Bonus) if you're down as a second driver. You'll only get it if you're the named driver.

No idea how much it would've been per month - I paid it off in one go. My second year's insurance (this year), with 1 year NCB, was £636 on the same car.

Miles on a tank? Probably about 150 - not entirely sure though. Might be more than that. It's a Mini, which applies to the fuel tank too - I can get £15 in from red line to brimmed. I went down to Worthing today, which is 120 miles round trip, on a tenner's worth of fuel (approx. 3 gallons).

Or you could get a Mini. Any Mini. Works just as well :)

Edit: Oh yeah, just remembered... try www.confused.com and see what that brings up. It's a site that searches umpteen UK car insurance websites for the cheapest quote.

You know if your the second named driver and it's just you driving the car or mainly you, you are pretty much driving illegaly.

I'm sure Famine can back me up, or tell me i'm talking nonsense.

The Avensis is likely to outlive the human race, but you could find more fun in a potato factory.

I'd go for the Saab 900 if I were you.

Blimey m8, your list is a bit ambitious!

I'm 16 (17 this december) and i wouldn;t be able to afford any of those.

I think for a 1st car, u shud go for the nicest small car you can have - cheap to insure and run. Pug 106, Fiat Punto, Renault 5 or Clio, Citroen Saxo, even a Vauxhall Nova or Corsa.

I am looking for either a Rover 211/214 (the '95 to '99 bubble-shape version) a Rover Metro/100, a Rover 214 ('89-'95) or if i cant get hold of any of them, an A-series engined Metro, or an old Mini. Dont even think about offering me a crummy Corsa, i h8 them!

I am a Brummie, and i love all the ****ty BL-MGR stuff!

I don't know much about the used car market across the pond, but I would get the newest car you can afford (insurance also), that will pass MoT.

But is by no means afordable.

I think someone mentioned you were deciding on getting a Citroen C2 1.1? Good choice.

However, I'll probably go for a cheap korean car or slightly older Vaux/Honda which will give 2 extra doors for teh same value, when the time comes.

What makes you think you need a car anyway? I don't see where that mentality comes from. What do you so depserately need to do that you can't bus, cab, walk, bike, or bum a ride to and from anyway?

Dont you think that every car enthusiats dream has been to get behind the wheel since a early age.

A car gives freedom and no more waiting at the bus stop like a sap. All you and your friends can go about cruising and go to places you would normally never go. Oh and girls prefer boys with a car.
