I think the "team" trophy is a recent invention (1990s). It used to be the driver won it, but the teams stipulate in the contract who gets the silverware. Case in point, when Alain Prost won the 1989 Italian GP, he tossed his winner's trophy to the crowd below. Ron Dennis was not pleased with his display of gratitude to the crowd.

It might be said that Alain had just signed for Ferrari, and was excited to win for the home crowd (although he never did win a race in Italy during his tenure at Maranello), and was thus caught up in the emotion of the win (the fans booed Berger the Ferrari pilot since a McLaren driver was taking his place).

Just my observations over the years.
