Hello everyone I am new to this website and I am looking for some help with switching to MT from AT, The last GT I played was GT3 A-spec on ps2, any suggestions apart from the blunt practice makes perfect? Even though that is 100% true I'm looking for any certain techniques that will help me along the way, I am a C B driver and have raced 100 races winning 28 of them in sport mode, about 10 of these races I have deranked for trophy hunting but that's no fun at all so now I am looking on racing properly and letting the trophies come naturally, I also have all driving aids off apart from cone markers and ABS which is default.

My next question is driving aids.. do you change them up for different cars or is it best to just keep them all off and ABS default? I find throttle control on a controller to be hard sometimes because on traction 0 the smallest throttle will spin me (depending on the car). Is there any settings that can help my throttle control aswell?

Im sorry for the long post and I thank you for you time, I will appreciate any advice thank you!

Sorry if the paragraphs seem long or any of the grammar is off, I am a 25 year old Englishman who is bad at English!

Manual is quite easy to learn, it took me about 2 days to learn. However, what is really difficult, is driving without aids..I turned everything off except ABS and I was constantly spinning. It took me about a month to learn how to drive without them. But it made me much more skilled and even though I'm using a controller, I'm ranked A/S and usually my lap times are about 1,5-2,5 seconds slower than fastest lap times in top 10. Sometimes, even 0,5 seconds. So, definitely try it :)

I think using MT and no assists (excluding ABS) is perfectly doable on a controller. At the end of the day, it comes down to the player's ability; all you can really do is give it a go for a few days, and see if you can get used to it or not. Don't feel pressured to use TCS 0 if it's frustrating you; you should only persist with no assists if you find it rewarding and exciting. There aren't really any settings you can change; fortunately the controller is set up well for driving in GTS whatever assists you use.

Same boat as OP. Went manual but with wheel now.

Free flowing tracks are quite easy in manual and assists off however tracks like Panorama are a nighmare with assists off . I have tried going faster but always spin. No matter how carefully i drive.

Also i think steering angle and correct gear also plays an important role when aids off. You have to drive perfectly all the time.

I only went to MT and aids off after getting a wheel. Could never quite get it right with a controller. I leave TCS on 1 or 2 for most cars though.

I’d start by switching all aids off except for ABS, and turn TC down to 1 or 2.

In my opinion, a lot of people in the GT community have an overly simplified approach to driver aids - they take the simple stance that “no aids is best”.

Personally, I like to mimic real life more. If I’m driving a vintage muscle car, or something that did not come with TC, then I turn TC off.

If, however, I’m driving a Gr4 car, or Gr3 car, for some of these cars, I have no qualms about using some TC. Technically, if these cars were actually accurate representations of their real life counterparts, they would all have TC on them (and racing them without TC would only be allowed in non-official lobbies).

Just a warning though, PD has done a terrible job of modeling top level racing traction control systems. In reality, every car should have its own TC specifically programmed for its unique characteristics, whereas PD has gone the route of coming up with an incredibly basic TC algorithm that they apply to every car in the game. This mean that on a racecar like something from Gr3, no level of TC will accurately mimic the real life TC systems in these cars.

So for me, it just comes down to personal preference. But don’t feel pressured to turn the TC off right away. If anything, leave TC on until last, then start working on turning it off.

I’d definitely recommend learning manual first. Once you get good a manual, you can use short shifting as a form of poor man’s TCS.

For learning manual, look on the HUD, there’s a gear indicator which tells you which gear you should be in for each corner (and it starts to flash when you get to what the game considers a good braking point). Both the gear and the flashing are not accurate for alien levels of driving, but they’re useful for when you’re learning.

The biggest thing you will need to learn is timing your downshifts, and how many times to downshift for each corner. It can be a little frustrating at first, but just stick with it and you’ll soon be driving a manual without even thinking about it.

I can’t remember what the default controller settings are, but I set mine up with Square as downshift and Circle as upshift

can't argue with twitcher at all on the tc. All these people trying to be superior and make you feel bad because they don't use tc, that's just not real. Don't bd scared to use tc. But if you are sure you don't want to use it, upshift earlier. It is literally all about the feel of the car. Even with the pad, you still have a connection to the car!

Alright! Here's my fun little guide to driving without aids

Step one: Buy Assetto Corsa
Step two: Set the dead zone to zero, all aids off, and manual.
step three: Crash over and over, each time improving ever so slightly
Step Four: Take what you've learned about driving well from a much "harder" (If that's the right word to describe AC) game and use that in GT sport!

In all seriousness though, you should start off by switching to manual. Try to learn the sound that the car needs to shift at and, when it reaches there, press the up shift button. As for driving aids, I'd say turn em off and start in a slow car (like a Kei car, for example)

Smooth progressive throttle - dont slam your foot down, feed the power in and note how the car responds. Back off if you are getting power-on oversteer.

Shift up early at first - focus on the throttle control and making it silky smooth.

Same with steering - feed it in, roll it out. Read up about the Friction Circle. Dont turn too much.

You only have a certain amount of grip - you 'spend' grip by braking and turning. Do both at once and you have to moderate both inputs or you will lock up and skate off.

Consider car physics - accelerating makes the front go light and braking makes the front go heavy. Be smooth and balance this to keep the car as level as possible in corners to prevent oversteer or understeer.

TLDR - be smooth and economical at all times. Start slow and build up.

When first starting driving manual try actively counting the gears in your mind. So for example your driving in 3th gear, upshift, 4, upshift, 5, upshift,6.... downshift, 5, downshift,4 etc.. It will help quickly learn what gears you need to be in certain corners and to get accustomed to always know what gear your in, you dont want to be looking at your hud for that. After some practice it should become natural.

ABS at default is fine. TC you have to figure out for yourself. Ultimately its faster without but you will need to have very precise throttle and steering inputs. If you find that hard with a controller and think you can do better with TC just keep it on. If you didnt know, with D-pad left or right you can switch in game menu and control TC while driving. That way you can quickly try what works best for you, could depend on the car as well some are more twitchy then others.

Bit of tip for this:

Set TCS to 1 at start IF its a standing start. After launch at second gear, set to TCS 0 if you want.

This is important because any car for some reason launch seamlessly with said TCS atleast at minimal, while if its off the tire will lose traction/spin in a way that it causes huge time losses compared to when the throttle limited by TCS.

Its a problem new in GTSport. GT5/GT6 didnt have this for some reason.

I think using MT and no assists (excluding ABS) is perfectly doable on a controller.
As a controller driver, I can't agree more.

Turn off all assists (ABS on) and switch to MT.
Yes, you will slip and lose control but it just needs practice because you probably have learnt to exit corners in full throttle.
Practice it and you will become better and better.
I'm an experienced controller-only driver, so I'm here to explain more things and help you if you need anything!

P.S. Welcome to the :gtplanet: community!

I usually drive fastest w/ TC 1 but like driving w/ TC 0 + ABS. I use a controller and have no problems (been using controller since GT1).

TC, even on 1, I've found, does limit your revs with certain cars (e.g. Ferrari 458 Italia '09), which I find really annoying.
