Ok you guys, my road test for my license is in 2 weeks and 2 days (but who's counting) and I am a nervous wreck. Cars and driving are my life and I would be humiliated if I failed. All my friends who took it says its ridiculously easy but it still doesn't make me feel any better. I consider my self a good driver on the streets but the D.M.V. grades you on silly things. So does anyone have any good advice for me especially any one from New Jersey.
Thanks in advance!!!

EDIT.... I passed! thanks you guys for the tips. I'm going to post up some pictures later.

Wait for them to tell you what you need to do. Also, when you're looking at intersections and your blind spot and stuff, exaggerate your movements a little - make it obvious that you're doing what you're supposed to.

Sounds good my friend says when you stop at a stop sign look both ways like 5 times and stuff. Also I have been practicing my parallel parking but I am not sure the dimensions of the box you must park in. The one me and my dad use is between 20 and 25 feet and about as wide as a car. I usually try to get as close to the curb as possible but sometimes I touch it. I'm not sure If you can touch the curb or they will fail you.

You really have nothing to worry about. Just remember to do both the E brake and put the thing in park when you do your parking. For parallel parking, I had to park between a boat and, well, nothing. I don't think they should dock you too much if you brush the curb a little, but don't try to plow straight over it either. And don't do what I did and park about three feet from it either.

EDIT: And they tell you everything. Just follow their directions exactly (and the rules of the road.) And I was told that you need to stop at a stop sign and exaggerate that by staying there for like 2 seconds. it's hard, but just do it.

My advice, is don't listen to MistaX advice.

whenever he posts it.

I remember when I took it they allow you to make a mistake, and most of the instructors will give you a second try at parallel parking.

lol, I see your from NJ... By any chance did you take it at Rahway DMV?

As was said earlier, exaggerate everything. Checking you mirrors? Move your head not your eyes. Have your mirrors adjusted properly so there isn’t a blind spot? Check it anyway. Coming to a stop sign? Stop, put it in neutral, grab a bottle of water from the back of the car, have a swig, put it back, look both ways, put it in gear and go.

And for Sage’s sake, don’t break the speed limit.

How can driving be your life if you can't even do it by yourself yet? I wouldn't worry much about the driving test. Try not to run over any small children, and keep it within 30 mph of the speed limit. You'll also impress the evaluator if you do a tight drift while leaving the parking lot.

Seriously: Driving tests are incredibly easy. Just take your time and obey all the rules.

Good point, backspace. Railroad crossings are tricky.

Lol, I'll give you the money you by me the drinks .

I took it at the Wayne DMV.
one more point- remember you've got to take the test in a vehicle with a center hand brake. I saw a bunch of people get turned away because of that rule.

Luckily, I don't recall any railroad crossings. In fact, the NJ test is so pathetic it's carried out in a parking lot.

But if you do come across tracks, I would advice not dumping teh clutch and trying to dorifto out of it.

I don't know what you have in New Jersey. I stopped once on the white line painted on the ground and they just told me to make sure I stop behind the white line painted on the ground so that I don't slide into the intersection in the winter.

Here in Wisconsin they take you on a short run of about 4 blocks. They test you on right and left turns, parallel parking (between one car and nothing), straight line backups, and turns onto a one way street. The test takes about 10 minutes. Just make sure you exaggerate motions and don't break the speed limit (as said before). Also, make sure everything on the car is in working order. Make sure the headlights, turn signals, brake lights, etc. work before going.

Well I'm not from Jersey but I can still make a few suggestions.

1) Get your head out of the clouds and realize that those "silly" things the DMV worries about are the only things you need to worry about.

2) Realize that mastery of driving in the real world is very different from mastery of driving in the racing world, learn to keep them seperate.

3) Drive safe and obey all of the laws of the road. 👍

Keep those basics in mind and you'll be able to enjoy your license in no time. Good luck!

I realized that the moment the first time I got behind the wheel when I was 13 with my dad. I knew from that moment that I would keep the racing for the virtual world and the track. I know too many teens who were careless and now are .

I was really nervous too, but it's a lot easier than you think. I ended up getting the highest score possible.

Just look at other drivers and compare themselves to you. If you can drive better than them, you will pass the test.

I disagree. By learning about racing, it's only made me better in my daily driving. I drive a lot smoother, I am a lot more aware of the cars around me, and I can react a lot better to things that happen. Even the position of my hands and how I sit changed.

I guess some things based off my experience from all those years ago:

1) Don't take the test in your Dad's full-size van. I took mine in a Chevrolet Astro, something that I had never really been too used to driving that much, and it certainly made things more difficult, particularly when you go from normally driving a Volkswagen Cabriolet or a Toyota Camry.

2) Worry about the details, but don't worry about the details. Drive like you normally would with Mom or Dad or Grandma in the passenger seat and you'll do fine. Check your mirrors (you always should be doing it) and make sure you signal when doing anything. Do your best to drive like an old lady, and by that I mean one that follows the speed limits and such, and you'll do fine.

3) If you screw up, don't let it get you down. I messed up twice, once on the parallel park and the other with the three-point turn. My guess is that it was because of the largeness of the Astro, I hit a single cone both times, but it wasn't enough to effect me overall.

Take your time and you'll do fine. Then again, it was probably easier for me going through a private testing company than if I had to take it through the Secretary of State's office.

Drive an automatic!!!! I cant stress that enough, my first drivers test was in my old Supra. I held on to the shifter a second too long and they almost failed me. If you have lines in the road for left turns use them!! I cant stress that enough either. Turn your cell phone off completely, and dont start the car until you and the tester both have your seatbelts on AND the doors are closed. Depending on what kind of person your tester will be you can probably talk to them and theyll talk to you so much they wont even realize if you mess something up. Keep your speed exactly and lane exactly, and when you are instructed to change lanes, wait like 4-5 seconds after you put your signal on to actually change your lane. Also, when you come to a stop sign stop either before the line or at the sign itself. Trust me on that one, if the sign comes before the normal spot to stop, stop at the sign then pull forward and stop again. Just relax and act like you have a TOMTOM telling you where to go rather than the guy/girl in your passenger seat. Just stay as relaxed as you can and take it easy. It might seem like this big hard thing to pass but really you dont have much to worry about. And when you do go to change your lane, look in the mirror (make it obvious) then look over your shoulder and change lanes. They like it when you do it like that.

And just like YSSMAN says dont sweat it if you make a mistake, it may seem like one or two can fail you but 99% of the time it wont, unless its a really big mistake like skidding to a stop at a light.

Remember, speed limit, keep your lane, relax, and just obey the traffic laws and youll be taking that picture sooner than you know it. Oh yeah i forgot, if the person starts writing, it doesnt mean you messed up necessarily, they have to give you a score for every aspect of the test so when theyre writing theyre just giving your score.

I would say good luck, but you wont need it. Its not as hard as it seems trust me, and if you fail the first time oh well. Its not like you get one chance then its over for the rest of your life. Out here i think the restest period is like 3 weeks but im not sure. All you have to do is relax and drive how your supposed to and youll do perfect.

You suck. Ok? If anything he shouldn't listen to you, as you've run a stop sign and blasted into a 90 year old woman.

Anyway I took mine at the Lodi DMV, and it's an actual course and not a parking lot, with streets and stuff.

It's easy. Be smooth with your gas/brake/steering and you'll do fine. It's all obvious stuff until you get to the parallel parking. It more or less depends on who's testing you, as to how many mistakes you can make. If your tester is anal (you can tell as soon as he gets in the car) then at most two. If your tester is fine, it's possible you can even hit the cone parallel parking and get another chance (hitting the cone once is instant failure)

Be sure the car has current insurance, registration and stuff. Went to take it in my mother's car and she didn't have the current insurance card in the car, so we had to go back.

Drive an automatic!!!!

Are you allowed to take the test in an Automatic in the US? My test had to be done in a manual or it wouldn't count.

As for tips on passing, the best advice I can offer is to get a good night's sleep the night before and try not to over think it either before or during the test. If you do make a small mistake don't dwell on it accept it and move on. Don't let it ruin the rest of the test.

What stop sign?:grumpy:

dent on the fender < 2 totalled cars (one, involving a train)

COMON!

Thats exactly what the Wane DMV has. It's a parking lot with some little painted lines to look like a street. Still, compared to actual on road license tests where you actually have to watch for traffic it's kind of cheesy.

Im not sure id te course is made of cones or painted on the ground.I would not prefer the cones because its obvious if you hit one. I know its not on a public road.

But I've never, ever, made contact with any other car. Which is far worse.

John you made contact with a TRAIN and, to my knowledge, you totaled a car while making contact with absolutely nothing which is up there among the all-time classics in GTP history.

Yours is far worse.

However, I agree with everything you say.

Yes, you can use an automatic when you take your licensing test in the US. I took my test in an automatic vehicle. Most of the driving schools also have automatic cars.

Doug has a good point.

Not only a 90 year old woman, but also a mentally handicapped gentlemen in the passenger seat.

bonuspoints!

Meh, that would only get you one star in Grand Theft Auto. Maybe two if one of the aforementioned people is a cop.

But with one star a cop will soon spawn on the sidewalks which you can then run over, and then you have two stars and a pistol. Then with a pistol you’re only seconds away from a third star and then you’ve got a game going. :D
