I stopped adding junk to my cars

I would happily leave them untuned for me to drive - sadly Bob requires me to spend inordinate amounts on tuning :(

For online racing I don't upgrade my cars. A higher variety of cars is better than a car with interchangable upgrades that can meet a variety of bhp margins.

Besides, a 400bhp 1200kg stock car is always going to be better than a 250bhp 1350kg car tuned to 400/1200, and will retain it's characteristics. Go into bumper-cam and I can't tell the difference between one fully upgraded MR car on racing softs, and another.

Well, adding power doesn't take away the car's character. Doing things like transmissions, LSD, chassis rig., soft racing tires, etc. does. I don't like to do things to a car that would be unheard of on a real life street car. It's not like I'm going to go to my local speed shop and buy 1 chassis rigidity for $20,000.

However, I could go to my local speed shop and build the motor and throw on some turbos or a blower. Happens all the time.

Actually, it'd cost quite a bit less than $20,000 for many / most cars. Connecting the front / rear on a car built on subframes is no major task. Or putting a cross-brace in. Any respectable speed shop will do it.

And adding major horsepower certainly does change a car's character. The car no longer drives the way it did when stock. ALL mods do that to one degree or another, but it's hard to argue against doubling a car's HP being the single most noticible change in character.
