So my buddy gets us a couple of tickets to last night's Dealer Preview at the NY Auto Show. On Preview night, lots of cars that are normally locked on public days are left wide open to be pawed and drooled on by the press , industry types and interlopers like us.

So like a couple of COMPLETE IDIOTS we BOTH forgot our cameras. I had left mine on the desk at the office. Sitting right next to my keyboard so I wouldn't forget it

Yes: I suck.

So I humbly submit myself for public flogging and offer this conciliatory gesture of 50 crappy photos from my Motorola Razr and the knowledge that I have indeed kicked my own ass over this.

SET ONE

New CTS looking very sharp.

Lambo folks we nice enough to let us grubby peons sit in any of their cars. The Alcantara on the Supperleggera steering wheel was badly pilled and I could only imagine the hundreds of greasy mitts that must have fondled it before me.

Spinning GT-500KR was off-limits. At least it was to your humble narrator.

Regular Shelby had surprisingly comfy seats.

V8 Vantage in a gorgeous red. Aston booth babes were equally hot.

XK-R Jag was a sweet ride. Interior made of hundred dollar bills. Really.

R8 simply stunning in person. Unfortunately off limits.

New TT a big improvement over the last one. Interior superbly executed. Florescent light bar for show only.

..more pics to come.

SET TWO

RS4 was the one car I truly wanted to drive home.

S5 was tasty.

Note to Audi: Your floor babes are awesome. Please tell the blonde with the long skirt that a retraining order is unnecessary. I blame the Mercedes bar who mixed some very strong drinks.

Ford Interceptor concept seemed like a me-too copy of the Chrysler 300.

Saturn Sky Redline looks and feels like a car that should cost $10,000 more than it does.

Z06 needs no introduction. After all the whining about C6 interior, I was expecting something that looked like it was assembled by a 3rd grade Art class. But it was perfectly fine. No Aston or anything, but far above what the haters would lead you to think. Shifter throws seemed as short and direct feeling as my M Roadster.

Freaking Cool.

Pyrometer proves it: Volt babe hotter than surface of the sun.

Guys from Maranello restricted access to their pony cars unless you knew the secret handshake. We didn't.

Porsche display was surprisingly sparse. No GT3, no Turbo. Not a single race car. Cayman was base model and so was the Carrera. I took pictures but was so drunk by then I had trouble holding my phone still. Here's the only one that came out okay.

Random rant: Steering wheel on 100k Cayenne Turbo feels as cheap as informed Corvette bashers imagine $50k C6 wheel.

..a few more..

SET THREE

Here's a car I really really should have gotten better pictures of. It is utterly gorgeous in person. Dramatic, elegant, graceful.. I almost stopped gawking at Maser's babes and that should really say something. Better looking by far than the Ferraris on the opposite side.

M5's trunk willingly swallows dumb 13 year old kids who think hiding inside is funniest gag since blowing farts underwater at the pool. Interior underwhelms. 6 speed manual shifter looks oddly out of place in center console.

M3 Concept was a no-show. At least, it wasn't there last night.

335i hardtop vert with M-Sport body kit. Apparently I had an epileptic seizure right about here. Now sure why since the car is not much to look at.

If at this point you're looking at these pictures and thinking to yourself, "Dude, you suck. These shots are terrible." I wholeheartedly agree and direct your attention to the thread title.

Lexus IS-F simultaneously ugliest and most beautiful car of the show, depending on which angle you happen to catch.

Nismo Z not bad looking in person. Faux diffuser looks trick.

Numbered plate on center console reads: "///M-Spec, this picture will never come out because your Razr's camera sucks. And so do you."

Not really, it reads Nismo and the limited production number. Show car read "0000"

FX Concept car.

G37 is pretty nice. Wheels are a little iffy..

Behold the S2000 CR. Over 80 Smurfs were liquefied in the unique painting process that is exclusive to the CR. The sign on the wing asked guests not to use aerodynamic device as coffee table. Volt Babe from Chevy floor politely refused my request she table dance on it.

..the rest are just too blurry to post. Sorry.

Good pics for a Razr phone M :)

I think I'm going on Sunday, hopefully it won't be too crowded. :indiff:.

And I am so so so excited to see that new S2000 CR and GT500.

[/sarcasm]

I was disappointed at this auto show. (Yes I was there.) They have a lack of british cars that I like, but about 20 camrys. WTF! Mexico has all the cars that I like, but not america. 👎:grumpy:

M5 with manual transmission ???? WTF ? Is this a joke ?

I was 120% positive they only came with SMG 7-speed ?!?!

EDIT: Not that that would bother me, quite the contrary, but I don't ever get to drive the car so.....it doesn't really matter :P

Incredible.......I'm a ///M nut (like you, I presume :) ) but I didn't know this ..........

Did it came with the facelift, or was it an option the whole time ?

PS: Never saw any 6MT videos of the E60 ///M5 :(

EDIT : Isn't it a bit the other way around, the manual only for the US  ??

I've been called a fan :)

The option just became available for the 2007 model year, so pre-facelift.

PS: Never saw any 6MT videos of the E60 ///M5 :(

I don't know of any videos, but there is a small pic in this review and a slightly larger pic here.

EDIT : Isn't it a bit the other way around, the manual only for the US  ??

It does seem very strange at first, but it makes a little more sense when you look at the US buyer for the M5. 1) The US is the world's largest market for M cars, so we have a strong voice in how BMW looks at it's products here. 2) Formula 1 does not have a strong following here, and consequently, a lot of the F1 influenced technology that filters down to the M cars, like SMG is not viewed as positively as it is in Europe. Enthusiasts, particularly wealthy M enthusiasts tend to be older and more conservative in their taste, so many have not been eager to adapt SMG.

The other potential buyer for SMG, people who do not drive manual or prefer not to drive manuals, dislike SMG because it isn't as smooth as a real automatic.

So when you put all those factors together, it starts to make sense why US buyers demanded --and received an 6-speed manual.

Oddly, it is NOT available in our M6 and I have not heard any plans to offer it.

Thanks, I really appreciated your answer ! It cleared things up, a bit ;)

It's a shame they don't offer it on the other side of the wet stuff, but that's the price we pay for having the Autobahn :P ......

As you said, the SMG is pretty raved about around here (have the newest facelift ///M5 brochure in front of me) and it's presented as a gem, but honestly......it would have been a nice option, that 6MT....oh well.......I'm not a huge SMG fan, as you may probably noticed, maybe because you can't do heel and toe downshifts in it (it does it for you) and it's not as involving, but nontheless practically fast :) Another thing that put me off the SMG (the one for the 330i mind you), I saw quite a few videos in which the SMG was on sports mode but it was heating up the clutch (after each shift, revving the engine up before engaging the clutch).......they may have had the old(er) SMG software or worn out clutches, but as far as I saw, the ///M gmbh cars with SMG seemed quite reliable (not counting the E36 ///M3)

EDIT: how do you change you avatar to "Freude am Fahren?" Do you have to have a certain status ?

Mit vergnügen :) (that is the extent of my Deutsch)

Those who do have SMG II and III here seem to like it. No major problems that I am aware of.

However, the SMG found in the normal 3 and 5 series cars are detested here, and virtually ignored. I am surprised you can still order the non-M version.

You may change your user title after 500 posts. :) Since you have 600+, you can do so at any time in your MyPlanet control panel.
