I was going to post this in the online section but it all seems to be about race noticications etc.

For some reason I always seem to come last in most races, I can keep up with the main pack, only a few cars lengths behind them but no matter what car I choose they seem to beat me. I sometimes win the odd race in certain rooms but it seems that the person who is last quits the race before the end so I sometimes come in last by default!

I'm at level 29 A spec and level 27 or something B spec and been racing online for about 3 weeks.

I do okay (ish) in the same car races but it seems everyone is supporting killer tunes that I don't know about.
 
You need to get your car choice correct if you want to battle with the best, then you have to drive it well. Make sure you have a competitive car for starters, at every level of PP.

You might think, for example, that a subaru impreza is on the same level as an NSX, but you will get spanked by the NSX if it's tuned just a little in the correct way. There's always cars that are at a peak of a category and if you wanna do well you have to choose the right one, tune it correctly and be a good driver.

I personally just like to race anywhere in the pack so I don't always choose the peak car of the category.
 
It seems to be a totally different animal compared to offline racing. I noticed a huge difference as well. Once you get used to online racing, you'll drive circles around the AI drivers offline.

I would also like to find regular fun rooms, at the moment its either a room full of super fast speed freaks or a room full of just plain freaks (seriously).

There is a couple of rooms that I keep looking for which I have fun in but there's never there when I look, and I just catch the tail end of them at midnight.
 
I've thought about online racing, but I know I'm not that good, especially with a DS3. Now maybe if I had a G27 or something like that so I could feel more in control of the car, then ya I would do online racing.

Maybe if they had categories for strictly DS3's then I'd try it. Anyone know if they do?
 
Even after receiving the platinum trophy, there's always someone who I can learn from 👍 So nevermind about that, there always will be aliens :)

It's all relative. I race against people who kick my butt with controllers and I have a wheel with paddles. You can become pretty skillful with either, I think the style just varies. For instance controller driving seems to be a lot jerkier and braking and accelerating and all that makes the car look like it's seizing in an epileptic fit. Yet, they can be just as competitive. I feel just as slow against some of the better drivers out there with my wheel and hours behind it (which are many). I don't know how they do it. But for me even coming in last is good fun, a decent conversation and a few thousand credits. Why not? IF you find the right room...

Mosty guys who race online are using a steering wheel which improves the laptimes with about 2sec. Me using my wheel improves my times in this way anyway, so...
 
Join the FIA GT3 league under online racing,all car's are regulated around 500pp with regulation tires,you might have some luck there.

Don't worry about it OP, as long as you are having fun it doesn't matter where you rank. Just race clean and watch and learn from the racers around you. Winning is nothing more than a result, racing is the whole experience. :)

[Clean] Online racing requires exponentially more thought than any A-Spec event. When I started racing online I felt really slow racing with the clean racers (rarely do the dirty drivers have any 'skill') so I made my aim simply to stick with the pack and concentrate on being able to control my car at the speeds they were doing. Whilst doing this I picked up a few tricks from the racers I was struggling so hard to keep up with which made me faster and enabled me to start understanding racing technique.

Now, after a good few weeks of racing my aim is to stay in the pack and finish in the midfield. This has meant learning a whole bunch of new techniques. Spotting overtaking opportunities, clean overtaking and most importantly how to keep my car in the pack without coming into contact with others (an element of sportsmanship comes in here). This is the hardest part of racing in my view. It requires a lot of additional awareness as to be quick you need to keep looking for chances ahead whilst potentially also defending a place from behind or either sides (or both!) of your car.

On a related note, it's really not about the 'tune'. The best tune in the world won't keep you at the front of the pack (or even in the pack) if your awareness is limited!

Shuffle and spec racing are a good way of learning technique as the car setup becomes unimportant and most people will be unfamiliar with the car they have been given for that particular race. You essentially know the drivetrain layout (FF, FR, MR and AWD are all represented) and all the rest comes down to your technique and what you learn in practise and the race itself about the cars 'limits'. Great fun and a good way to experience cars with limited grip levels (none of this racing soft, tyres as wide as the street, grip and go yawn racing).
 
i just worked on a few of my cars seperatley in practice mode to find a tune i like, never really very complex just a little bit of suspension, aero and ballast. sometimes gears.

just practice driving alongside/just behind and off to the side of people and that i find heps your driving so much. you learn the spacial awareness required so you dont always crash into people plus you pick up other peoples lines :P

as much as it pains me to say it, the driving line can be useful too. on tracks with some crazy braking (suzuka in my opinion) it helps to just have a small basis on where to roughly brake. but then again 260 down mulsanne with no clue where to break is great fun XD

I've always raced with a pad and I have great fun online. I beat a room of wheel users the other night :D

Strategy and self-control are just as important as the equipment you use. I'm not fast by any means but I'm generally patient.

I thought I was begining to be bored of gt5 until I went online... :D
The online experience has changed my driving style (for good)
 
Welcome to the world of online... I always thought I was "fast" playing GT4 back in the day... Then I went online for the first time in GT5:P and I got hit in the face with the fact that Im not as fast as I thought I was.... I'm faster than the average or casual gamer, but nowhere near the guys in Division 2 or Division 1 of GTP.... Just the way it works. Theres ALWAYS someone faster out there.... ;)
 
i find if u want to make races easier put a couple of quick laps in then drive into the pits and wait for the pits as being at the front means ur less likely to be taken out by laggy players and make the most of the exaggerated slip stream effect as it makes a unlikely overtake possible if u want any cleanish racing add me
 
I was of the same meaning, I thought I was pretty fast, until I came on here o.O I'm still decent considering I use a DS3, and usually come top 3 in races, but nowhere near as often as I thought I would have.

First, Thanks for joining our 450 PP room last night. Second, on nights we allow all cars...we usually chew people out who bring an NSX to the track. Because of the difference in tire width between cars, weight distribution and car balance is affected, but not taken into account with Performance Pionts. (I'm sure you can find a thread about it somewhere here. Search for skinny tire problem)

Performance Point limiting is okay, but to really learn the best way to navigate, I'd look for single make or spec races. It does you little good following an Impreza's line through corners while piloting an RX-7 and vice versa.

above average cars in our races include:
Dodge Ram for truck night
240RS, Izuzu 4200R, Ruf BTR, Ford RS200 for 80s night
--Mainly twitchy, but if handled properly will consistently be near the top. I'm usually middle of the pack every night but 80's night when I keep that Izuzu in the top 5. Heck I accidentally ran Comfort tires last week for one race and still didnt get last. (And we were on Cote 'd I hate you)
All subaru wagons for family night

Most any mid-ship on non-theme nights --SPECIFICALLY THE BROKEN NSX-R, not that I'm bitter about it being so poorly thought out in relation to PP. It can be tuned down to 438 PP and still compete which is a large diff. in our races.

PS: Proud DS3 w/ Auto Only Trans player. (probably why I rarely win online :sly:)

In the advanced search option you can choose which forum you want to look through. Search by a particular car type and you should discover some amazing tunes with relative ease. I'm borrowing :ouch: one for my 190 E Wednesday nights 450 PP races.
 
I only realy play online and generally finish in the top 3 of most races, Its all about having the right cars for the regulations in each lobby, all my tunes come from this site (with a little change here and there). Add me for some competitive clean races my psn is THE_MUTTS_NUTTS_

I SUCK at tuning even though I love racing. This is in essence having your car tuned by professionals. Like any mechanic, though, you should find one that's right for you. Check at the bottom of the tunes to see how many "likes" and "dislikes" and read the tuner's description (if it's weight reduced and has a certain HP makes a big difference I think). Anyway it's a great tool and I'm glad these guys are out there making it easier for the rest of us! 👍
 
Don't use racing cars[or cars with downforce] below 600pp because you're just wasting your PP instead of using it on lower weight or more HP.
 
I feel your pain op:) I say practice, practice, practice. Tune several cars that you can use online and stick with it so you're use to the cars' handling. Most online players are GT5 enthusiast and will have a rig/steering wheel setup. I say most but not all. I've known DS3 users that come on top and will destroy wheel users. Low HP lobby is a great way to start. PP restricted lobbies are ok except some cars have sure win advantage in this kind of races. NSX, Elise to name a few. And don't forget those 500PP trucks with atleast 700HPs. GT5 online is my favorite. Add me and maybe we can start some amateur racing league.
