The game must have decided you cut the track or had contact just before you went into the pits and it must have given you a penalty over 5 seconds, then as you were not serving it (because you clearly can't when in the pits), it started going up and up and up and you'll only notice once you exit the pits and since that can be quite a time on some tracks that may be why it was so high but of course I'm only guessing.

Was this at brands hatch by any chance?

i had no cut to the track and no penalty be for going in the pits , it was at Alsace - Village FIA GT Manufacturer Series - Test Season 21 race

I've had one at Brands.

Hit the X to stop refuelling, heard a bump, got an orange arrow and a two second penalty, all before I had chance to retake control of the car.

Do you think this is track specific?

I've had a penalty from clipping the right hand barrier entering the pits a bit too hot, it was the first time I entered the pits in a race at that track.

I have reserved my judgement for a long time but after today I think the biggest assclowns are Sr B That’s where I get most of the penalties from Nothing but constant penalty incurring door bangers

Penalty system is completely broken. I've gone from S to B safety rating within 4 or 5 races, for wrong penalties ranging from door rubbing, being brake tested and being rammed from behind. No point playing online again until the developers fix this.

Find a clean online lobby. Don't drop online altogether. The AI aren't worth racing. But clean racing was fun on GT6 because we stewarded ourselves.

Sport Mode is a failure, if clean racing is what you are looking for.

I am a drA srS, I can honestly say that the majority of the races I participate in are generally clean and I usually start mid pack. BUT, the penalty system is ridiculous, non the less.

Today, I did the FIA nation's race at brands hatch. Started 12th, made my way up to 7th before receiving a 10 second penalty for a tap to the car in front of me that appeared to be slowing down abruptly to serve his on penalty. My tap had no effect to his race, so I don't understand why I would receive a 10 second penalty. If he had spun out because of that contact, I could understand the penalty because I should have paid more attention. Anyways, I dropped down to 12th and made my way back to 8th before the end of the race. My Dr and Sr pretty much unchanged, so I'll move on

I got a 10 second penalty for tapping a guy in front of me going into turn 1 on interlagos, the worst part about is he braked entirely too early and I didn't even push him off track.

Then I get dive bombed and served a 3 second penalty.

Later after burning my 13 seconds in penalties which took way more than 13 seconds mind you, some ass clown serves his penalty directly in the middle of the middle section of interlagos while in traffic. Just slams on the brakes right in front of me and I get 4 more seconds tacked on.

I'm incredibly pissed off that taps to other cars give me ridiculous penalties that are next to impossible to serve. They really need to implement the iRacing system with points against you for mistakes and if you accrue enough points they disqualify you. I'm sick and tired of this crap, completely ruined my night.

Yes the penalty system is garbage. Just when I thought it improved it gets worse.

Slight touch can make you get a penalty.

Terrible system. I git a ten sec penalty in an other wise clean race for some guy turning in hard on me. I could have just not overtake him but he blew way past the left turn after the back straight on interlagos and I didn't thtink he would be back on track any time soon. Ended up coming back hard and hit me so I guess it's my fault next time someone runs off track I'll just pull over. I think that's what the system wants.

Either way I get to pad my stats down here in SRB and SrC nothing like a few pole and wins for absolutely nothing

Edit: finished the day down 16k DR from a reset (never finishing lower than fifth) but exactly where I started in SR. My SR swung wildly from 54 to 87 back down to 34 just to finish at 54 where I started.
Good job penalty system! You really got it right this time.... Nothing like covering the board over the course of only 6 races.... They got me pegged

After my last 2 races on pole at Monza (Gr4); being hit from behind at turn 1 to receive a 6 second penalty, and the other trying to avoid contact of another driver causing me to go over the curbing (5 second penalty), I have officially decided to shelve the Sport aspect of this game until it is sorted out. What was a very fun and competitive "jump in and race" section of the game, has now been reduced to frustration and stress. Not worth the aggravation.

As of earlier in the week I thought penalties had improved and clean races seemed a lot easier. I just finished up the Gr.3 race at Yamigawa where I got several penalties, only one was my fault. I gave up trying at that point, and slowed to let the penalties run out. I gained 8 SR and got the clean race bonus.

What the? Twice off course, 10 seconds worth of penalties, and I get a clean race? Huh?

OK since 1.16 I think, THINK, its been a bit better. Any penalties I got I think I deserved and have been able to maintain my SR S rank without too much issue.

I haven't rage quitted any races recently which is also a good sign!!!
