The chances of actually being able to get a car once I get my liscence get worse every year :indiff:

You can get a car just not a fast one is all, I don't know kids these days. Although when I was 16 I thought I would be able to get a MKIII supra for my first car because they were cheap. Then 18 I get my licence, reality hits and I realise that nobody is going to insure me with any fast car pass plus or not. But some kids just want everything now, instant gratification. Sometimes you just have to drive something slow and to be honest modern small displacement engines are more than enough to get you in trouble realy.

Also Roo's mini is awesome!

Do it. Do it. Doitdoitdoitdoitdoit. It's the most sensible thing you could possibly do.

I've never, ever heard the notion of buying a Corsa described as "the most sensible thing you could possibly do"...

Seriously - a 1.6 Mondeo. You can buy them for about £250, it'll cost no more than £1,500 to insure and, when you're done with it, throw it away.

Or, buy a Gp1 car for buttons (2CV/Panda), store it on the drive, insured to build up NCD, and drive a work's van instead.

But he won't look fly and get mad props from his homies with a mondeo or panda. I mean can you imagine how ridiculous he would look ghostriding the whip with his stunna shades on in a 2cv? I mean you'd have to be a retard to not realise you ain't **** if you ain't drivin an audi brah.

Im gonna have a chat with the transport manager and see if he will give me a van to take home! Fingers crossed.

The corsa would still cost me 3 grand to insure, hell it seems like any car I get is gonna cost me three grand. Im gonna do some quotes on mondeo and focus though and hope those will be better.

If not looks like im just going to have to pay up, and then next year once I have some NCB I wont have to pay so much.

Im thinking IF i do get a seat or polo I should go with a modification friendly insurance company, so I can atleast change the alloys and lower the car if I do get a 1.2 or similiar.

If I wanted a car purely on the basis of being "cool" it wouldnt be an audi....

You don't drive the 2CV... That'd be foolish. You just use it to get NCD, because it doesn't GO anywhere. You drive the work truck instead.

I know, I was taking the pearse.

But now I have a new goal in life, to ghost ride the whip in a 2cv.

Edit: Or a transit van.

Yeah, get a van. Everyone knows that a white transit can take on a Veyron, and win easily.

Wow that really sucks, then again... did you really check that "insured by your parents" thing ? I don't know how things work in the UK, but here in Germany that can reduce your costs in a massive way.

Example :

Subaru Impreza WRX STi insured by me ( I was 18 at that time ) : sth between 6000 and 8000 EUR a year

Subaru Impreza WRX STi insured by my mom ( The whole family is allowed to drive the car, including me (18 at that time ) of course ) : 1200 EUR... talking about full insurence here of course, covering the full price ( well at least as the car was new ;) ) of the car in case of an accident I/my mother caused. which is like 800 pounds... although my mom is in the lowest insurence class possible in Germany.

Isn't that possible in the UK ? Don't ask like this : Can my mother insure a car for me ?
Do it like this : (your mother : ) I'll buy a new car, how much will it cost to insure it ?
Agency : Who will drive the car ?
(your mum : ):The whole family
Agency : Are any family members 16-25 years old ?
your mum : yes
etc....

Well that's why I've driven a Subaru Impreza WRX STi with 280 hp at the age of 18, and still do btw ( just with a little more power now ;) ).
Don't give up that fast, there should be a way. If it's not the way I described, well then maybe there is another. Check some British internet forums etc

In the UK, the person that insures the car must be the main driver.

I think there are some extra NCB tiers in the german system. My wanted to do exactly what you have described, so that anyone in the family can drive the car, but all the insurance companies Ive tried that with so far state that all drivers must be over 21 for that option.

I know my first car won't be fast. They only things I'm looking for from a first car is that it is reliable and can fit 2, ideally 3, 5ft 10 people in the back seats, but not necessarily in complete comfort.

I can't find a 1.6 Mondeo anywhere on Autotrader :odd:

eBay is the best place to buy a 1.6 Mondeo. But beware, they're slower than a slow thing trying to keep up with a snail carrying lead.
And for insurance purposes, go for the saloon.

You may say that you'll drive carefully whatever car you buy, but I know that isn't true, and if you don't think you do at the moment, the first close shave or actual crash you have will make you realise you always did.

 That is Gospel. I drove like a bat out of hell the first year or two that I was driving. I still drive rather, uh, quickly, but with a little more forethought and self-preservation.

It's a good rule of thumb, buy the slowest, crappiest car you can find as your first car, because you are definitely going to mess it up... whether from over-exuberance, under-experience, or whatnot.

1.6 Mondeo sounds good... plus, it's probably easier to keep from getting hurt in a bigger car.

Have you tried adding your mum as a named driver? Often having an 'experienced' female on there can make a difference.

Toronado> Insurance fraud is serious business over here so something like that just wouldn't be worth doing. Unfortunately.

I didn't think they had those.

What I did was not buy a car when I first passed my test, but had myself added to my parents insurance as a named driver on their 1.1 fiesta for about £75. I ragged this around for a few years getting a bit of experience.
I hit a curb on a roundabout destroying a tyre, got some air when I took a hump-back bridge too fast, stuck the car in a ditch, and broke a windscreen - all in the first couple of years.

Eventually aged 21 I got my own car, a Talbot Horizon 1.3GLE. Very basic, but great fun. It had no electric toys in it - not even a stereo, but it did have a close ratio gearbox. It wasn't fast, but made short work of Astras, Escorts and Golfs anywhere but the open road. First years insurance £375. No NCD, driveway parking, Hampshire postcode.

When the Talbot rotted away I upgraded to a 2.0 Peugeot 306 sedan auto. Nasty, heavy & sluggish compared to the Talbot. Insurance: £327. 3 years NCD, driveway parking, Devon postcode.

When the autobox in the 306 died, I didn't bother replacing it. These days I cycle if I'm going somewhere local, borrow or hire a car for longer trips, and race on the ps2. It's cheaper, and much safer.

You are being quoted horrendous amounts, but you have your age, experience and postcode working against you as well as your choice of car. You can get mobile on the cheap, or at least you could ten+ years ago.
