Idea to stop "new" useless threads!

This doesn't just apply to the drift thread, the GT4 Race Reports forum is being clogged with nonsense threads too, despite Touring Mars' sticky thread at the top of the forum explaining what should be posted in here.

If I recall correctly, there was a time before the current update of GT Planet where a warning would pop up before you created a thread to make sure you'd searched, and had the search button right there to use if necessary.
After the update that feature has gone away, and we're being plagued by threads that shouldn't be posted where they are, or shouldn't be opened in the first place. e.g. This thread. This user had opened the same thread, with 3 slightly different titles, but essentially the same question, in the wrong place, 3 times within 2 hours. Thankfully daan intervened and deleted the first 2 threads, (sadly one of which had luftrofl's original, and perfectly correct answer in), and locked this one. The bad thing is, I'd given advice to the thread starter, not to ignore the search option when starting a thread. Having tried to start a thread since, and noticed that this feature has now gone away, I do feel a little....:guilty:

It's not the new members' fault, they surely don't realise they're entering an almost 90,000 strong community, and want a quick answer to whatever is troubling them. We should put that safety net back into place to help them help themselves before they take a flaming for asking what must seem to them a simple and innocuous question.

This is my point exactly. Most of the time it is because people are not sure how it all works around here and those of us who have been around for a while take this for granted. I admit i may have been a little harsh with my initial post but this idea could be that little help for newer members as they learn the ropes.

One thing we are forgetting is Jordan though. For all i know this idea may be a hell of a lot of work and as my web design knowledge in very limited i cannot comment. Would this idea even be possible to add onto the existing gtp? People are mentioning an older version of a similar thing so im kinda assuming it could just be updated and added again?

Thanks

So possibly the best option would be for the existing and long-standing members to not flame new members for not searching. I don't know if I'm reading too much between lines, but I don't think I'd be elligible for that.

If you open a new thread without searching, you will get flamed. Whether you've been here for one day or two years. I've seen many members who have been so for over a year and are still opening retarded threads without even searching.

But still, it seems we're just looking for ways around the thread filtering by the mods, which still seems to me as the most plausible option.

This is what Jordan had to say on the subject a while ago.

I'm not to keen on new threads which ask questions covered umpteen times before. Yes there will be posters who believe a new thread gets quicker answers than searching does, and in some cases they're right.

Yes there will be members that flame in those cases and yes (thankfully) there are usually also a few members that count to ten, sigh, and are helpful.
Reinstalling 'mod approval', nah. I'd shudder to think how much more work that would be (for them, ..... not you).
- read the post,
- approve / disapprove.
- explain to poster why his/her post was rejected etc etc

Ive been here since May 2005 and joined in Jun 05 and created 1 thread and < 200 posts. Instigating some kind of post count before being allowed to create a thread would mean that I would have had to wait for quite a while before creating my ONE (and so far only) thread on this forum.

The one thing that annoys me more are the single line posts e.g.
  • well it works with my account fine
  • Heeeeellllllllllllllppppppppp!!!
  • i hated it
This forum reflects real life, it has its good and its bad things. We have to deal with it to the best of our abilities.

My point exactly:

People simply will not go through the trouble of searching for their answer, but will just post their question (even if it has been asked a gazillion times, sometimes in the following thread) and expect to get at least 10 replies: four will be flames, another four will be suggestions to use the search function one will be an IBTL and the remaining one will be a more patient user giving the answer.

Yes, that annoys me too, as certain members do it all the time and doesn't really contribute to the forums in any way. I won't go on about it too much as this isn't really the subject of this thread.

Annoying as it may infact be, you have to realize some people are just born to be well....a PIA, I can't say much(I made a few crummy theads in my day,so I have no real room to chat).

I'm a bit suprised that the "search before creating a new thread" page that I set up last year was still having such an impact! I'll reinstate and we'll see if that helps things. Don't bother talking about post requirements for new threads or moderator approval...there is certainly no need for such extreme measures at such a time.

....

Lol there comes the spam.

Nah just kidding. Apparently it has been taken care of now.
I just want to say, that something VERY efficient would be that once you hit the "new thread" button, you need to wait 30 or 45 seconds in a screen with only the search this forum bar and an explaination about useless posting.

This can be limited by post count and stuff. But I think the forums would get very very clean then:) Just a suggestion, what do you think?

Not like this is a request, I saw this thread and then came up with an idea;) If this continues I think this would be a good second step:tup:

Just to note, this has finally been (re)implemented.
