Do you think PD would have had a better online system now? Considering GT4 would have been a good area to have practiced on for PD so they'll know what they need to do for the next game. It sucks that PS2 didn't have that many big games that utilized it's network adapter and hard drive bay.

I think GT5's online would have been significantly more advance than it is now. GT5's online feels more like it's in an experimental stage.

That's what last gen was anyway. Consoles were just taking off with online. Now online is out of the box.

Then GT4 would suck too :grumpy:

PS2 Online in general sucked pretty bad with a few exceptions. But I think they would have known what they did wrong and then utilized that knowledge to make improvements for the next installment..

I was kidding BTW, has I never played PS2 online :) But maybe they would have known what to expect...

Online with no possible game updates/patches wouldn't have worked, in my opinion.

Especially since the PS2 had no hard drive to store the patch data in the first place.

Didn't PD "practice" online play with GT5P anyway?

Well I had a hard drive in my ps2 actually, everything was made so you could fit one so that's not a problem really. There was some official ethernet adapter with a hard drive connection. You know people are still actually playing FF11 on ps2 and that use the HD.

Only Phat PS2's support the hard drive. Slim PS2's will support an external USB drive with some aftermarket, uh, modifications to the PS2. I run a hard drive in my Phat using the network adapter.

Well you learn something new everyday. 👍

Actually PS2 did have a Hard drive it came out with the Net Adaptor but considering it was a failed add on for Final Fantasy PD probably thought it wasn't enough sold to justify Adding Online play to satisfy just a few.

All considered, the GT4 Online beta was pretty full-featured. It ran well enough that I have to wonder why it never went to retail.

Because the network couldn't handle the traffic which would come of it if it had worked. But the broadband adapter wouldn't work on all PS2s designed for it. Mine wouldn't, at least not completely, and mine is in the "will work" list. I can't imagine the PR disaster to hit SONY when millions of PS2s wouldn't work with the adapter, and then the network would bog down badly for those who could get on, from the stream of data flooding it.

Just look at GT5, and complaints of physics and handling differences between offline and online play.

Yeah, right. NFS, Toca had online on the PS2 and it was very good. Dare I say better than GT5 ( and others ) nowadays.
PD just don't have a big enough team to handle this kind of stuff IMO.

CrashBandicoot
Are the PS2 online severs still up?

I want to say yes, because a Few days ago someone told me there is still a community of Socom 1&2 players that still play those 2 games. Also if you go to the PSN store you can DL PS2 hard Drive info to partition your HDD to play PS2 games online with your PS3.
