If GT5 is a driving simulator, don't you think...

That anyone with a real life driving license should be good/great at it ? I was thinking about it last week and came to conclusion that GT is probably a simulator for gamers only. If it's really a simulator, ask someone you know that doesn't play videogames and see if they can do anything with the steering wheel.

Ask your mom, dad, grand-mother, uncle... (someone that also doesn't have racing experience) anyone that has real life driving experience. Give them a car they could drive (don't give them a Ferrari if the best car they ever drove is a Hyundai Accent...) and see if they can drive it with "ease". If they can't, then GT should drop the "simulator" tag.

I'd like to know the results right here. Remember, have them use a wheel, not a gamepad. (Also, give them a view they could actually do something, like interior view or bumper cam).
 
Driving with my wheel at 60 mph and below feels just like driving my IRL car at 60 mph and below. Slight difference, but basically the same.
 
I let my wife try and she is not a gamer. She couldn't talk about how crazy it was that it felt like driving a real car, with feedback and everything. The major thing to remember is that in games people like to put the brake and gas down to the floor every time they touch it....

Have you ever driven any car with gas and brake to the floor everytime? If you did I'm sure you would spin out and crash. Try it when you go home from work, everytime you press a pedal push it all the way down... It's either be really fun or really painful

This made me chuckle, and the feel sad because it's so true.

But yes, a ton of car control, even if you aren't aware of it, comes through the seat. You can tell how fast your cornering because you can feel the G-forces and the tires. It's definitely not the same in the game.

A friend of mine can kick my butt every month on the autox course but isn't a big gamer so I can slap him around at GT.
 
Key word is SIMULATOR, of all racing games I've played Gran Turismo has always had the best simulated driving experience.

I mean how many times have you jumped behind the wheel of a new car (or someone else's) and immediately felt as comfortable as driving your own. I'd venture to guess if I put you behind the wheel of my Evo your first few laps would be terrible 'cause your not used to it.

In short I'm fine with the tag line
 
GT5's phsyics are pretty good. It's not lack of accuracy that keeps real drivers from doing well in GT. What keeps them from doing well is lack of "immersion". They can't take it seriously when the car is on a TV in front of them, and they can't feel the speed or motion of the car. Example, if someone is used to modulating the brakes based on the g force they feel, how could they possibly apply that to GT?
 
Also, although the physics and performance are supposed to simulate real driving, gamers rarely try to simulate real driving. You don't normally ram in barriers and other cars, fly into corners at higher speeds than your tires can carry etc real life, and yet it can be done with reckless abandon in this game because there is no consequence of death or property damage.

I can drive my car in real life and then drive it in the game and recognize striking similarities between the two in terms of handling, sound and performance. That's enough to make me feel it deserves the "simulator" title.
 
I agree with earlier post. Most people can't drive irl, so why would they be able to drive in GT5? As someone who spends the majority of their time behind the wheel of real vehicles, I think GT5 is good for what it is: a video game. You can only simulate so much from a video game.
 
As someone previously stated...yes it is a driving simulator. But being good at GT5 AND/OR real life driving aren't interchangeable.

Mainly because GT5 you don't have stop lights, signs, speed limits, oncoming traffic, kids on the side of the road...or most importantly, repercussions for driving like a lunatic.

Not to mention no one drives 35 MPH in GT5 and no drives 150 mph IRL regularly other then race car drivers...
 
It's a video game folks ;-)

However.., the "real life" experience with GT5 is simply based on your set up. If you're a gamepad player then all aspects of SIM racing is out the window.

The key to maximize the experience is with a top end set up. For this you need a Fanatec wheel with all the options (with clubspot pedals). A good racing rig. A three monitor system. A good surround sound set up.., and a Buttkicker.

With this set up it will feel much closer to real life.

To really get the experience.., swap out your PS3 with a maxed out super fast gaming PC and a good PC SIM.., and GT will then seem like childsplay..
 
People with real driver licenses are good at driving? Where do you think YouTube videos came from?
 
Having a driver´s licence doesn´t mean that you automatically are capable of using a gaming wheel properly.
Only if you would drive in GT5 than you would in RL, then I think you´ll find enough similarities ;)

But in contrast, I´m pretty sure a sim pilot would be capable of landing a real bird if the situation asks for it..

No - because a large % of the people who have a driver's license issued to them are actually quite poor driver's and can barely drive on the public roadways without crashing/rubber necking/making a fool of themselves by driving in fast lanes - in general most are "like sheep following the rest." 👍
 
Even if someone is good at normal driving, the same skills don't translate at all to track driving. If you said "anyone with track skills and experience" instead of "anyone with a license" then you could make an argument.

People new to the game simply floor the pedal to the metal and wave the steering wheel like crazy no matter if they have a license or not. They don't even try to drive properly just because it's a game.
 
It is what it is and its nothing more than a pretty accurate driving game that's pretty fun. Nothing more and definately nothing less than that. The player has the ability to drive it as a simulator or you can change settings and drive how you want. I prefer sim style all aids off.

I think this probably has a lot to do with it. They don't care.
 
Pretty sure anyone could handle it if you told them to keep it within real life speed limits on the road.

If you're using a FFB wheel with GT5, you can literally feel "g" forces and sense of inertia through the steering wheel. I don't know the setting most people have their wheel on but I recommend setting it higher than where you feel comfortable. The wealth of information that comes through the wheel is quite astounding (ever since GT5P, I've always set my G25 @10).

Yes, PC sims like GTR2 might have more effects but most of them feel contrived and canned. A good example is gear shifting- in GTR2 or even rFactor (both are based on the same gMotor2 engine) you feel a "thump" indicating a changed gear. In GT5, regardless of the car's drive-train I can feel the tire grabbing the pavement (and losing if you're in the wrong gear). What makes it even more fantastic is that with a car like the Ford Focus or any FF cars, I'm able to literally feel that the power is coming from the front of the car while an FR like the 300ZX, it's from the rear. Amazing stuff.

Done last week. My dad was visiting me and I put him behind the G25, gave him a souped up S2000 and sent him to Autumn Ring. He did perhaps a dozen laps in all, didn't have one single crash and clocked his fastest lap at high 1'40s after he had got used to the feeling. I was clocking low 1'20s in the same car with so he wasn't even that slow considering that he shifted up at around 4000 rpm and I don't think he used full throttle once. He said the wheel feedback to be surprisingly close to real life, the sense of speed to be a bit too low and the "seat of the pants" feeling to be obviously missing.
 
No, i don't think you should be good at GT5 just because you can drive a real car. The sensations are completely different than sitting in a real car. Obviously, there is more of a connection to the road in a real car and some people can't overcome that loss when playing GT, while others have no issues. That doesn't mean GT doesn't simulate a driving experience, because it does.
 
My 2¢.

I divide people in to three groups: those that know how to drive and those that don't. Some of those who now how to drive, very few, know vehicle control.

Play gt5 enough and it will increase your vehicle control. I never got that sense from any need for speed games (porche unleashed is the exception).
