If GT5 is a driving simulator, don't you think...

I have a 2 friends who have tried various sims on my rig. One has loads of trackdays, 300 laps of the ring and a 350z under his belt and he said the sims have no real feel at all.

The other friend has been a national champion racing motorbikes and owns a Z4 M coupe and is seriously fast with it and can't even drive in a straight line on any sim/game. I used to ride with him until I nearly killed myself trying to keep up with him but it's funny how's he totally useless at games of any sort. He's utterly analogue though and didn't even own a tv until he was about 27.

I went to the track for the first time last year. Had no racing background at all but I had my wheel(G25) since GT5P. I did very well and I don't think I would have been as fast had I not played GT5P with a wheel with a proper set-up.

i see alot of why can you drive in gt5 and not it real life

probably the responsibilty, pressure and tension!

take into account what you need to do when driving for real

then think to yourself. all i need to do in gt5 is put my foot on this pedal too go and move this wheel.. this pedal will slow me down.. ahh i got it :)

using the clutch would probably give you some practice for driving a real car as i have had a friend prove to me!..

also have another mate who hasnt played a game with a steering wheel with a focus st as he owns 1 and he jumped on 1 in a gaming centre and just looked like a natural.. so yeah i reckon those who can drive can jump onto gt5 with a wheel no problem

That moves way too much. The guy was facing the ceiling at some points. If you have that perspective while driving, something has gone terrible awry.

It moves that much to produce a crapload of G-force. Your relationship to the screen (the road) is the same at all times.

I suppose you aren't going around the roads at 200 km/h in real life, and not in turns at least. That's the difference.

For sharp turns you have to slow down to 50 km/h IRL. You don't try to take them at 100 km/h and slide out.

But as close as the feeling is, it doesn't have the feel of G-forces nor speed. Don't get started on about the cockpit view having the feel of speed, it doesn't. It just gives me a headache.

Yeah, definitely not one for after dinner sessions... Wouldn't drink 'n drive with this one either, but the g-force pukefest would be a youtube classic for sure 👍

GT5's phsyics are pretty good. It's not lack of accuracy that keeps real drivers from doing well in GT. What keeps them from doing well is lack of "immersion". They can't take it seriously when the car is on a TV in front of them, and they can't feel the speed or motion of the car. Example, if someone is used to modulating the brakes based on the g force they feel, how could they possibly apply that to GT?

This, you brake in real life you feel even the slightest touch! In GT5 you feel nothing. It's the lack of Gs that is the major difference. The only feedback we get is though the wheel. But still, driving at normal speeds like someone does on the road, yes they'd be able to drive well in GT5. Smashing the gas and red lining it in every gear, erm maybe not. And DEF not be able to do that in real life either!

That anyone with a real life driving license should be good/great at it ?

Are you kidding? Have you been on the roads lately? 99% of the drivers on the streets are a danger to themselves, and everyone around them. That's not a judgment on the game, just the reality of who is really out there. :)

If you're using a FFB wheel with GT5, you can literally feel "g" forces and sense of inertia through the steering wheel. I don't know the setting most people have their wheel on but I recommend setting it higher than where you feel comfortable. The wealth of information that comes through the wheel is quite astounding (ever since GT5P, I've always set my G25 @10).

Yes, PC sims like GTR2 might have more effects but most of them feel contrived and canned. A good example is gear shifting- in GTR2 or even rFactor (both are based on the same gMotor2 engine) you feel a "thump" indicating a changed gear. In GT5, regardless of the car's drive-train I can feel the tire grabbing the pavement (and losing if you're in the wrong gear). What makes it even more fantastic is that with a car like the Ford Focus or any FF cars, I'm able to literally feel that the power is coming from the front of the car while an FR like the 300ZX, it's from the rear. Amazing stuff.
There are very clear differences between perceived sensations and physical sensations. The only thing you're actually feeling while playing a video game is the artificial pressure of the pedals and some vibrations coming through the steering wheel; however, because you're watching video your brain perceives these stimuli as being connected and therefore imagines the feelings that it thinks it should feel.

In a real car, however, g-forces and vibrations are physical sensations brought to your brain by nerves from wherever in your body the feelings originate. Obviously the brain still perceives these sensations in a certain way, and by that I mean it makes sense of them, but the methods by which it gathers the information is different.

That you think you can literally feel what's going on in the game says very little about the game but a lot about your brain. And no, your brain isn't any more special than anybody else's.
