Whatever car you drive, it looks like it'll be awesome fun Piccies afterwards, please!

I wanna live in Europe now. You guys get all sorts of fun amatuer stuff... we get nothin, cause little kiddies might end up dying or some BS.

I'm gonna say Japanese... GO JAPANESE!!!

There will be more than pics, were aiming to video as much of the event as we can especially seeing as were going to try and have a dress theme for each day to!!

I didn't know such a rally existed for students.

Neither did i untill a few days ago, im happy there is though. will be so much fun!

Since this is a gumball type rally, I assume you will be speeding/racing?

It not a race, its a rally. I think thats something we should all remember when were doing the event. Im not going to say were going to stick by every single speed limit im place but by the same token if we do break them it will be by a few mph. Unlike the people who participate in the Gumball rally we don't have oodles of cash to pay off fines here, there and everywhere.

Ive always been one to say that the journey is more important than the destination and if going a few mph slower than we want achieves that then thats what we will be doing. Also our route will travel through Germany and we can pretty much as fast as we want on the autobahn and going that fast for song long kinda isnt fun.

There is no prize for getting to the destinations first so racing to get there is irrelevant, im sure we will smoke a few people off the lights in our surprisingly fast choice of car, and have a little bit of fun leaving the slower cars for dust now and then but we got to keep a cool head so we do get to finish the rally in our own car!

Remember we are, hopefully, going to be doing this rally in a Mercedes with a 5 or 5.5 liter v8 engine (depends if we get 500SEL or 560SEL) and although they are not supercars we hope to surprise a few people especially while we are in our tweed suits with flatcaps while smoking old man style pipes. :sly:

Anyway in short, no were not racing and ok im sure we might break the speed limit now and then but with the threat of huge fines from the police on the continent it should keep those rampant horses under the bonnet under a tight reign

dude, you're going to need loads of cash to feed petrol to that V8 engine... should I make the wire transfer now or in september?

As this is only a seven day event I could probably take part in this but I would need two students to enter.

I can get a car that's not a problem. Sponsorship can be provided by my company and I have loads of contractors that we use for maintenance who would also place small sponsorships. I can also get the graphics on the car very cheap as the sign fitter who did our shop will do me a discount.

If Famine is still up for driving we could do a team (team GTP?)

I couldn't see the entry fee on the website.

I thought Ben would be the one representing GTP 💡

I thought he would be respresenting his University?

If not, we will improvise and create another team.

Do you have a radar detector?

I'm pretty sure these are illegal in France but I'm not sure about everywhere else.

Havnt thought about that actually! We got sat-nav which has the camera positions thing in it but im not sure how well it works on the continent

After a few rough calculations, a journey of roughly 2500mile and an average of 15mpg, i think that the fuel bill will end up at around £650. Not bad really and this is going to be a big event for us so why not have a great car and just pay a little extra

The entry fee isnt up yet and is still being sorted out along with the confirmed route. If you sign up to the website with your uni course etc you should get info back from them after a day or too. We are thinking the entry fee to be around £1000 to £2000 per team

If you can manage to get a team together then by all means do it. It will certainly be a great experience for you and everybody who goes. As for team GTP, i think a GTP sticker could work its way onto the car to be proudly displayed. Ill have to fire a PM off to Jordan first though to make sure its ok.

EDIT

I wont be representing any university. The other 3 chaps going will be though. Im allowed to enter due to a clause that states "each team has to have a minimum of 2 members and they have to be full time students, other passengers do not have to be students"

Ill certainly fly the flag for GTP (with permission)

Just go out and pull a couple of student birds - entry requirement plus evening entertainment all rolled into one 👍 :sly:

Did a quick wikipedia check on radar detecors.

# Finland
# France
# Germany 75€ fine , 4 Points, destruction of the radar detector
# Greece
# Ireland (Republic of)
# Netherlands 250€ fine and in possession name (since 2004)
# Portugal
# Spain
# Turkey
Depending on your route, it probably won't be very useful.

Here in Belgium having a gps device with the fixed radar locations is legal, but if you have a device that detects an upcoming radar post, it's illegal.

Yes it will...

All the top radar manufacturers make concealed mounts for them so police can't see them. I know Escort also makes a detector that can't be detected by police radar detector detectors.

I couldn't stand to drive without mine

That bimmer 635 is gorgous:tup: 👍 . I have always had a knack for bmws.

If none of those cars work out for for a Ford Mustang GT 5.0 from the mids 80s - early 90s. Those cars are sick.

Do they have them in Europe?

I've never seen a concealed mount advertised.
I do know that you can effectively scramble radar guns with an automated garage opener, but then you have to prove that it is for that use.

And Spec, your mates and yourself must be the most well of students I know. Able to spend a few grand on a simple pass time, how un-studenty.

I know someone who did a Plymouth-Dakar (I think it was Dakar) in an elderly Espace. If I recall correctly, all the participants donated the cars to poor inner city people. To be honest, I don't know how they would run them if they really are that poor. I suppose they could have sold them off.

im by no means well off but by the same token im not poor, neither are my friends. We have set strick budgets for everything we need for the rally and also hope to get sponsorship from a few companies to help ease the cash situation. When we look for cars too we take into account mpg and how much it will cost us to use that car. Surprisingly the 5.5 v8 merc we want to use will cost us around £650 in fuel for a 2500mile trip. When split 4 ways the cost doesnt seem so bad anymore.

Ben's family own half of the town he lives in... then again, the town only has about 4 houses.

This sounds like a right laugh, me and my mates have been wanting to do something like this for ages!
Could be a good send off for my 1.1 Metro! :dopey:

Should imagine there would be some good photography oppurtunities too.
