On the subject of time travel, the ability to move through 4-dimensions may not be as dangerous as we might initially suppose. If every decision and action makes another universe, then by going forward or backward in time you would go to a different universe (a new one of your making, the one in which you went forward or backward in time).

By my understanding this means that if I go backwards in time 20, 30, 40 years from today to prevent your parents ever meeting so that you won't be born, I would end up in a different universe, as clearly this act hasn't happened in this universe (as you clearly have been born) and by the very action of going backwards in time, I make a new universe for myself. In my new universe I could prevent you being born, but in your universe there'd be no impact on you.

Or something...

That's the part that hurt my brain aswell. The population of earth is around 6 billion. All those people are making decisions.

Does it also apply to animals? I can't see any reason why it wouldn't? After all animals make decisions to.

Well, I would like to think that multiple universes could be created by random chance too. Certainly another universe must exist depending on my decision whether or not to type this post, but is another universe 'created' in the event of whether or not the electrical pulses transmit properly as I hit 'Submit' ?? Suppose the wind on my face blows with a different velocity in each simultaneous universe?

Imagine a world where Ford was named Forl, and the mustang looked like the corvette and vice-versa. That's a little different.

Because of the little 'e' in Ford (and because since I am a Ford employee I am perhaps more inclined to dwell on these things during hours of inactivity) I thought up a great way to turn things around for Ford. If they changed the pronounciation of the make to 'Fiord' it would give the impression that Ford is a much more upscale auto manufacturer, thus ensuring more demand for our cars and a higher sale price, leading to more profit, and less terminations.

Snooty BMW Driver: "What is that passing me?"
Snooty Fiord Driver: "Hah! Look at that piece of **** BMW in my rear view mirror!"

The engine ran on burning elephant tusks

Poaching for elephant tusks is illegal in all universes. Shame on you.

Very interesting take on things. Would traveling in time affect the 'real' universe that all of us live in, or would it only affect the new 'real' one that you have just 'created'. This leads me to think, if it is impossible to affect the real universe for another person, is your universe unaffected if you change parameters in the past of your real universe?

Why thank you... :sly:

That's my understanding. I might be very wrong though.

I'm struggling at this point (you nearly broke my brain with that). I don't think you can affect someone else's 'real' universe by going backards in time (for reasons explained already). I'm not sure about going forwards in time...

Every other universe is as 'real' as this one. This is just the one we are currently in. They are just based off other decisions. There would be a universe where Alaric (or whoever he is) did not decide to sack Rome.

On the second point, you may create a different universe, where things would go on as 'normal,' but make the decision to go back, thus creating a new universe, and altering that one. The question is, where would you return?

Is this discussion wrong, or does science need to change the word for universe. Uni- implies one. Shouldn't we be talking about polyverses?

Yeah, forward time travel opens up a whole new can of wormholes.

And you're welcome :)

Well I can understand that for every possible scenario, there is the possibility of a real universe in which that has happened. Invariably, the existence of intelligent life has ceased in many of those cases... just imagine some society building huge bombs.. then imagine every society on every planet destroying themselves. So if we are to go on to the assumption that all of these trillions upon trillions (i.e. the very definition of infinity) of polyverses are simultaneously happening and are all real, and are created upon each changing factor, infinity polyverses are growing pretty much to the degree of infinity. I know this universe is real to me, can there possibly be another Kenny Schabow in a parallel universe who is a completely different person based on different life experiences who believes that he is the only real Kenny Schabow? I couldn't possibly handle that.

Polyverse sounds just alright to me... but me in a parallel universe would probably disagree and insist on universe, since he is the real one.

That's why I think there is an infinite number of them, jsut as I think that space in our 3 dimensions in infinite. For example, I think you could never go too far forward, backward, left, right, up, down, forward in time, back in time, to another universe to one side, or to another universe on the other side. I think all dimensions go on together.

Heh, maybe, but I don't know if they can just change it like that. Perhaps they need yet another branch-off company with high performance ford vehicles, and you could come up with the name.

Hey, it's that stupid monkey's fault, I didn't invent the car on planet ?(/';[(*).>). Plus, they've got plenty as it is. Why would they need so many anyway? Plus, let's assume there are more of them then any other creature except when humans come to be, and by then they have figured out a way to steal fuel from it's several moons.
Then, way before they run out, they devise a way to turn all converted energy back into useable fuel. For example, the heat generated form the car, the smog, and other energies directly associated with the movement of the car, are all lconverted back to fuel that they can use.

Now if only we were smart enough for that. 💡

But a universe is just that, one universe. Here, we are discussing a multiplicity of universes. Aren't we?

I've been thinking – does each decision or variable simply spawn a new universe? What I mean is, right at the moment before I decided to reply to this post, did this current universe split off into two paths where I decided to-reply or not-to-reply. Obviously I'm living in the 'to-reply' dimension at the moment, but did the not-to-reply dimension simply begin with me deciding to close the thread? Or did the 'not-to-reply' follow the exact same history, from the beginning of the universe with the big bang right up to viewing this thread, as the 'to-reply'?

If the latter, wouldn't that mean that each universe therefore has a set chain of events. A plot of what will happen as such. :boggled:

Depends on the context. When you refer to a singular-verse, as in the one we are living in, then universe is correct. When you refer to a multitude of universes, then polyverse or multiverse would be the correct terminology.

The polyverse is a collective of universes. ;)

Imagine a universe where Ford is a profitable company that actually makes reliable cars that people want. Yes, it sounds pretty far-fetched, but I guess it is possible.
