My 1999 Mazda 626 GW CE 2.0 DITD

Soo where to start?

Well, my grandfather bought this car new in August 1999 with the following specs:

1998 ccm Turbo-Diesel
90 metric HP (66 kW) @ 4000 rpm
220 Nm @ 1800 - 2600 rpm
5 speed stick shift gear box
about 170 kph top speed
about 13 sec 0-100 kph

My grandfather died in 2002 and my mother got it, which means I grew up on the back seat of that car.
2011 it did not pass the §57a check (basically Austria's MOT test) due to rust (known problem on Mazdas).

In those 12 years it did 176 962 kilometres without any problem.

In january 2014 I got my driving license and I needed a car. I thought I'd give our old, rusty Mazda a go and began to repair it. Note that the car was standing around without starting the engine once for 2.5 years.

Despite an empty battery, it started without any problem. So I spent my summer 2014 repairing it and making it ready for MOT/§57a. Fortunately, I have a good friend who helped me a lot with this. Without him my Mazda would still not be ready.

Some things we did:

Checking the suspension and exchanging the broken parts
Exchanging brake discs, brake pads, brake fluid
Oil Change
Timing belt change

Things I let the local workshop do:

Rust repair
New paintjob over the rust repaired parts

I know, this sounds like work for one week, but there were many, many unneccessary and unfortunate delays, so it took until January 2015 to finally get my 626 back on the streets.

(Yeah, I know, I covered the license plates like a boss, but I was too lazy to load the pictures to my computer, so I used Pixlr to cover the plates up with some supahcool stickers :D)

Rust on the rear wheel arches. Not beautiful, but the only real problem that most Mazdas have.

We demounted the oil panonce to check it for rust. Picture of the engine from below

In our Garage. At this point there were still many things to do, including the timing belt change.

Finally, everything had been repaired and my loved Mazda passed MOT. Note that the rear wheel arches and the exterior mirrors have no paint on them.

Pano of the huge interior. I mean seriously. It is huge and very variable. I love it.

20150720_134216.jpg

Last week I bought a new radio for two reasons:
1. I lost the unlock code of the old radio
2. I wanted AUX and USB.
The new radio is some kind of compromise between feautres (AUX, USB) and design (I wanted something that fits my generic 90s interior, nothing that shoots lazars and so on)

So here we go with the final pictures. I know, there are only few people who actually like this kind of car, but the fact that I grew up with it teached me to love the extreme reliability and simplistic design of older japanese cars. Cheers

Update:

The next regular MOT test should be done this month, so I had settled an appointment at the workshop for last wednesday.

On tuesday I put the winter wheels on (summer wheels are kinda 'illegal', if you guys want I can explain it) and while doing this I found out that the rear right brake caliper got stuck. This means new brake discs, new brake pads and a new caliper. As I don't have the time to do it myself at the moment, I need to let the workshop do it for me, which is kinda expensive. So I talked to the mechanic at the workshop (who also had a 626 once :D) and he agreed that I can buy the needed parts and bring them (together with my sumo, of course) to the workshop on monday.

I'll upload a picture of the sumo (that sounds kinda cool, I think) on the winter wheels later ;)

Dad has one of these, with the diesel, but the SE variant - definitely torquey for what it is. Nice car. :)
True. It has more torque than many Common-Rail and Pumpe-Düse (Volkswagen Diesel injection, don't know english name) Diesel engines with 90 hp.

Edit: 184+ k km at the moment. Will update the milage with every update about the car :)

Car is back from the workshop since yesterday morning. Next MOT/§57a check is in August 2016.

When I picked Mr.Sumo from the workshop, the gearbox felt suddenly very rough, that may have been because the car was standing outside over a quite cold night and before I brought him to the workshop, the hot and dry weather, the garage parking and my daily driving helped that the gearbox never cool off completely.

I decided to check the gearbox fluid, which looked good, so I need to observe the shifting behaivour in the next days/weeks. Maybe I'll needto exchange the oil.

Only problem: The car part dealer gave a gasket that is a little bit too big for the filling plug (It stays in place without any problem), so I need to watch if it seals.

I'll upload a picture tomorrow morning.

Still 184k km. That will change tomorrow as I will be driving about 400 km.

My parents had the older version GD/GV?. It was diesel and terribly slow. We blew up the engine twice. Now they have a a 2000 Toyota Corolla Wagon AE111 which they have put well over 100000km on it since buying it at around 110000km and it's still going fine.

GD for sedan, GV for the wagon. The GE did not have a wagon, mine is the wagon version of the GF (hence GW)

Definitely the one of the predecessors of my RF2A Turbodiesel.
Either the N/A RF 1998 ccm or the Comprex-charged RF-CX with 1998 ccm.

Oh, and the Corolla is just another proof of the japanese reliability :D

Edit: Here's the picture of the gasket.

Oh, and 400 km was not quite right. I totally miscalculated, the actual driven distance today was 351 km.

The filling plug is the top right rusty screw :D

Two days ago we decided to buy one dry cubic metre of wood for the winter... since we don't have any other possibilities to transport it...

It's JDM ghetto stance broh!

20150822_112853.jpg

...but only on the rear end

20150822_114506.jpg

A funny story matching this pictures: When we put the wood into that car, two other guys, who also bought a cubic metre parked next to us with an Bimmer E91 with trailer and claimed that 1 cubic metre would never ever fit in Mr.Sumo...

Well, it worked flawlessly for us but they had problems fitting their cubic metre with the wooden cage into their trailer.

Also, when I saw how low the car was at the rear, I thought the engine would have problems when going uphill. Wrong thought, Mr.Sumo did 60 kph uphill in the fifth gear at about 1250 rpm :D

Edit: Of course I forgot the milage...

184.6 k km at the moment

You could've fit at least another half a meter's worth in there! Nice job though man, looks like you've got yourself a a very nice, very practical little car 👍

Today I calculated the actual fuel consumption over a distance (50% highway, 30% country roads, 20% city) of 726 kilometres. 46.52 litres. So the average consumption is 6.408 litres per 100 km, which is about 36.7 mpg.

He is going to hit 185 k km soon.

Update time! :D

At about 186.6 k km at the moment

Things that need to be done in the near future:
  • Engine oil refill
  • Gearbox oil refill
  • Getting rid of the camber I set up on the rear for the winter because that also influences the toe angle and makes the car very unstable on slippery surfaces
  • Deleting the EGR actuator pipe
  • Cleaning the intake manifold if it is dirty
  • Changing to winter tyres

New engine oil, winter tires are on and the camber on the rear is gone.

187.2 k km at the moment.

Today I drove on a country road and out of nothing it was extremely foggy, driving 50 kph was the maximum possible without risking anything.

Just a little update:

Coming towards 189 k soon. The streets are full of salt here in Austria (I have no :censored:ing clue why as there was nearly now snow or temperatures below 0 celsius :grumpy:) and the rear left wheel arch is rusting again. I hope it won't get too bad until the yearly MOT test in August as I am quite short on the money as a student.

Other than that he runs well, of course. A little rough running thanks to low temperatures and only short distances to drive. That will change tomorrow as I will be driving a few km on the highway/Autobahn. :)

I am planning on repairing my 17 inch wheels (they had a lot of scratches as I bought them and painting them in a metallic graphite grey. Opinions?

Other than that, the car is fine, but it is rusting like hell on the wheel arches.

I am also thinking of installing a boost controller, but only when the rust is repaired and properly sealed.:)

Nice to see it being worked.

I think the Metallic graphite grey would look great on there.

Update timeeee!

Still running strong, but the rear right brake caliper seems to be stuck again . Luckily, my trusted car part dealer in vienna told me, that if the abnormal wear on the rear right brake disc is caused by the caliper, he will give me new parts for free (right caliper, brake pads, discs on both sides).

Since the written part of the 'Matura' (the final exams of my school career) is in two weeks, I do not have the time, nor the nerves to fix that now, so I will drive around with that for three weeks (only the most necessary trips).

Also I bought new oil will change it in three weeks or so. 191.5 k km at the moment.

EDIT: If you are wondering why I exchange the oil now, Mazda recommends to do so every 6 months or 10 000 km. I know that the engine will also do it's job if I exchange the oil every year, but it's not too expensive, so why not.

Did the Oil change on friday.

The brakes are also ok, kinda. It seems that the brakes just have a bad contact pattern, it seems that the workshop that did the brakes one year ago kinda messed up and the brake clogs are not perfectly straight in the caliper. The very rust intense winter did not help either, but it's nothing too big to worry about. I will upload pictures of the brakes sometimes.

192.3 k km at the moment.

It seems that I am still alive, my Mazda is alive too, ofc.

196700 km ATM

Brakes got repaired by myself in August with new disks, pads and a new caliper, which did not cost me a cent as everything was replaced under warranty.

Not much has changed since then. I transported another cubic meter of wood and bought some Thule roof racks for 80 €.

Today I went sledging with friends, so the following pictures were produced.

Oh and BTW I got stuck in 20 cm of snow today as we are experiencing a quite cold winter here in Austria. I had to remove all the snow under the car, mainly with my hands, which was quite... uncomfortable at about minus 8°C and an extremely cold snowstorm on the open field.
