I just wasted a whole day looking at that pos corolla. I left town at about 8am and get to chicago around 10am. I waited till 1pm to get a call from this guy and another half hour for him to get to where he wanted to meet up at. The guy was the biggest DB in the world and he lied his ass off on the phone. I get there at it was an SR5 with a shoddy engine swap, the rear diff needed to be rebuilt, the trunk and floor board were rotted through despite him claiming 99% rust free. He wouldn't even let me drive the thing. I went on a ride in it then my friend did and it ended up dying. The guy claimed it ran out of fuel but it was an engine issue. We just left before the guy even got back.

You talking about that black coupe on chicago craigslist? Just a quick look at the pictures told me is was a SR5 with a swap.

So a few weeks back I posted an Integra DC5 in Super 2000 touring car spec and it went down pretty well, so today I offer you an ex-SuperTouring Mazda 323F from circa 1994/1995 ish that I had a chance to get a close look at today (albeit not as close as the Integra):

What I know - it's a 2000cc V6 of Mazda design loosely based on the engine in the road-going 323F. A similar unit was used in Ford's Mondeo BTCC cars for a fair while. It produces circa 300bhp at the 8500rpm rev limiter, it's FWD and has a six-speed sequential gearbox (that's geared way too high for Croft circuit which is the car's first outing with it's current owners - apparently they barely even get into 5th). Wheels are 19" as far as I'm aware.

As you can see from the engine bay photo it's running remote-resevoir dampers just like the Integra was and has an enormous carbon airbox. Brakes are bloody enormous AP Racing things (much, much larger diameter than the current touring cars - probably a good 15" at the front) with massive stopping power.

It sounds gorgeous.

The team member I spoke to for a while said that they used to run a Ford RS200 with 700bhp until somebody made an offer they couldn't refuse for it so they bought the Mazda as a bit of a change! It's nowhere near set up correctly but still seems fairly competitive.

I suppose they have a right to secrecy but there's not much point as the rules are so clearly biased towards fairness, so there aren't many options to come up with something secretive and special. Not to mention, cars have to be made available to privateers after a year so once anyone can buy the car the cat's pretty much out of the bag.

In the SuperTouring era which ended in 2001 (to which the car above was built) there was a bit more secrecy but I'm pretty sure that carbon "cover" is actually a massive airbox driving air into the six carbon intake trumpets. I've seen pictures of the old Mondeo's engine sans that cover and it's the same unit as far as I know.

Back in it's day the Mazda was one of the least competitive, which is surprising when you see the amount of work that's gone into it - but then it's the same in any top level motorsport. Someone always has to lose!

Thanks for that Home4summer, some excellent pics of a cool car. I always thought that those 323fs had potential. The 1.8 BP turbo motors go into them easily so that would make a cool little sleeper I reckon.
Pity that the airbox is covering up the motor, it would have been good to see underneath and also, does anyone know what the big, silver canister in the engine bay is for?

Love the 323F / Astina (as they are called here). There are hundred of modded Astinas on the streets of Hong Kong, but I have never seen any as ripping as that.

Thanks to the wonders of the internet I can show you it probably looks a little like this (this is the Mondeo's V6):

(I know, tiny pic, only one I could find). I've found more pictures of BTCC Mazdas though. Below is one in the livery ran by Matt Neal back in the early/mid nineties:

The one I saw could well be one of Neal's old cars (funnily enough, so could the Integra I saw as he campaigned those too) but I've seen the orange one change hands a number of times before and it's been orange for at least ten-ish years.

And Patrick Watts used to run an older 323 before he moved on to Peugeot 405s and 406s.

Finally, the late David Leslie used to run a Xedos 6 back in 1993/1994

There isn't that much to see with the touring cars to be fair.

I've autoxed a miata several times. They're fantastic cars. Problem is they're a bit small especially with a roll bar so I can't put the seat back like I'd like. Great handling though...
